Greetings to the list, I am researching my Gibson family line. In a nutshell: I have records showing the birth State of my Grandparents, Samuel Gibson and Mary "Mollie" Elizabeth Brown, as TN. Samuel was born around 1878 and Mollie around 1885. I do not have records showing that they were "born" in the Knoxville area, but know that they were in (or around) Knoxville in 1909. I have a 1909 Birth Record showing my Aunt Dorothy Evelyn (Samuel and Mary's second and only living child at the time of this birth) as being born in Knoxville, TN. Although Samuel and Mary are listed as being "from" TN, at the time of Dorothy's birth - their current residence as it is shown on this July 1909 BC as Middlesboro, KY. (Gee, and I thought my 1/2 commute to the hospital while in labor was long!) There is a column on the BC for the occupations of the parents, but neither my husband nor I can make out the handwriting. We think Samuel was working as either a "stationary trainman" or "stationary trimman". ??? We are sure of the stationary part, but cannot read the second word. I do know that in 1917 Samuel was working in Cleveland, OH as a switchman (railroad?) I am not familiar with the various (during this time period) occupations in rural KY/TN. Mollie (appropriate for the times) was a housewife. **Now, there is one curious piece of information on this BC that I cannot quite figure out. I have various other later documents all showing/confirming Mollie's maiden name as Brown, but on this BC it shows the mother's full maiden name as Miss Mollie Earrington (Carrington.) ????? I know that Mollie's middle name was Elizabeth, but the name shown after Mollie on this BC definitely is not Elizabeth. (Unless Earrington/Carrington was my Great-Grandmother's mai! den name?) Confusing. Sometime after 1909 Samuel and Mary moved from Middlesboro, KY (or Knoxville?) to Indianapolis, IN where, in January of 1916, my Aunt Violet Maxine Gibson was born. And then shortly after Violet was born, Samuel and Mary (& family) then moved on to Cleveland, OH where, in August of 1917, my Father Victor Raymond Gibson was born. On my Dad's BC it shows that Mary had 5 children, but only three lived - leaving me to presume that sometime between Dorothy and Violet, Mary either had a miscarriage or lost a child. I have various documents on Dorothy, Violet and my Dad, but I cannot seem to trace my Grandparents. I do not know where they died or where/if they are buried. I can only imagine that Samuel and Mary must have had siblings. Did anyone in the mid-late 1800's ever "choose" to have only "one" child? Anyway, I have no information on Samuel and Mary other than what I have presented here. Since my Dad was their last (known to me) child, I have searched for death re! cords for Samuel and Mary in Cuyahoga Co. (Cleveland) OH and have not been able to locate anything! If anything in my short family story rings familiar to you, please contact me. I truly hope that all is well in your corner of the world. Samuel ("Harry"?)
