    3. Hi Archie, I don't know if this will help or not, but here goes <g>: --------- From: Rule's Standard History of Knoxville, Tennessee (1900). The following paragraph is taken from the online transcription of Chapter 14 - "Transportation": http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/history/rule/chap14c.html "From Knoxville the Knoxville Southern, as it was originally called, but which is at the present time known as the Atlanta, Knoxville & Northern railroad, runs through an agricultural country, until it reaches Louisville, fourteen miles from Knoxville, and six miles further on reaches Friendsville, an old Quaker settlement. Madisonville, the county seat of Monroe county, is forty-four miles from Knoxville. Jellico Junction is sixty-one miles and Wetmore, at the head of navigation on the Hiwassee river is sixty-seven miles from Knoxville. From this place there is weekly steamboat connection with Knoxville and Chattanooga." -------- Also -- according to an old email (2000) from another researcher: "Records of the Friendsville Quaker settlement have been copied and are available at the library in Maryville, Blount Co TN. Probably the East TN Historical Society also has them available in their library in Knoxville." ------ Here's an interesting article online about Friendsville and the Quaker's part in the Underground Railroad: http://www.mtsu.edu/~tncivwar/ugrr/page5.html ----- Good luck in your search! I seem to run onto snippets which indicate that the area around Hardin Valley and Hickory Creek was populated by Quakers. My ancestor George Thomas Holmes was born there, and his parents migrated to Knox county from North Carolina. Any information would be appreciated.
