Many of you have been following my posts concerning Professor Hagy's 1966 thesis on Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799 written while he was a student at East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Degree of Master of Arts (History) I was fortunate to secure an original copy of his thesis from a rare book dealer and subsequently offered to make copies for interested researchers. The thesis contained no copyright provisions but a couple of folks encouraged me to try to locate Professor Hagy, some 37 years after he published it. The results of my search are quite interesting, but before I tell you what happened let me first give a brief overview of the Castle's Woods settlement for those who are new to the list. "This thesis is a narrative account of the frontier settlement of Castle's Woods. The community is an interesting case study of the ideas of Frederick Jackson Turner regarding the frontier. Castle's Woods in many ways fits the pattern of the typical frontier community. Apparently first settled by a long hunter, Castle's Woods, like a magnet, drew westward the classic frontier types, hunters, farmers, speculators, surveyors, artisans, and preachers. Even some aristocrates settled there. The usual frontier customs and activities were observed in the community. These included a considerable amount of lawlessness. The greatest problem for the settlers in Castle's Woods was the Indians who were a menace from the time of the first settlement until nearly the end of the eighteenth century. After the Indian problem had been eliminated, the frontier stage quickly passed away...... A large amount of primary materials were used in this study. The most important sources were county records, state archives, national archives, and the Draper Manuscripts." The importance of Castle's Woods is twofold. First, it had its day of importa nce as a stepping stone to the West. Secondly, it is important as a case study of the American frontier. It was the first permanent settlement in Russell County, Virginia, founded in 1769 and located on the Clinch River. Castle's Woods was a stopping off place for folks on their way West. A generation or two earlier many of these settlers had been in the Shenandoah Valley around Augusta and Rockbridge Counties and before that Pennsylvania and Ireland. Soon they would leave southwest Virginia and begin to populate Kentucky, Tennessee and later Texas, Arkansas, and points north and west. These were the pioneers that made Walt Disney famous; Daniel Boone, Samuel Houston, David Crockett and many like Boone, paused briefly in Castle's Woods before heading out into the pages of history. So, where does one begin to look for someone 37 years after he writes a nice research paper? My 16 year old son looked up from his computer, said "whitepages.com" and in less than five minutes I was speaking with Professor Hagy who is now almost 67 and living the good life in central Florida. We had a nice chat and I thanked him for the work he had done and told him I was making copies of his thesis for genealogists on the internet and he said that he had no plans to reprint the thesis and to "copy away." We talked mostly about how important it was to preserve obscure source materials and what a great value the internet was to accomplishing that task. I have enjoyed seeing this project grow from finding a single copy of an important, somewhat obscure document to a situation where enough people have copies that it should always be available. As in the past I make the same offer again. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of Professor Hagy's thesis please contact me privately at cscunc@aol.com for details. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105 If I send this post to your list it means one of two things. Your surname is in the document OR there is a very high probability your county was settled by some of the people who lived in Castle's Woods. (On your Virginia map find Abingdon and look a little to the west. You see the small community of Castlewood which is how the named evolved.) Searching for any information on a James MORTON who was listed in the Anderson County, Tn 1830 census. After 1830, he disappears and I have not been able to locate him. I'm sure he came from NC to TN sometime between 1800-1817. 1830 Anderson County Census Morton, James 0000201 - 0012001 2 Males 20-30 1 Female 10-15 1 Male 40-50 (James) 2 Females 15-20 1 Female 40-50 (wife) Living next door is a Tilda MORTON. Haven't a clue as to who this could be, but judging by the age of both Tilda and James, I would think they are brother and sister. Morton, Tilda 00001 - 0000011 1 Male 20-30 1 Female 30-40 1 Female 40-50 (Tilda or "Matilda") Morton Family lore says that one brother of my gg-grandfather (David Morton) went to Rutherford County, TN, one to Bell County, KY and one to Blount County, TN. David's brother, Thomas, was in the 1840 Anderson County census and then disappears. Thomas Morton's listing in the 1840 census is as follows: Thomas Morton 202001 - 121001 2 Males - Under 5 years of age 2 Males - Over 10 and Under 15 1 Male - Over 30 & Under 40 (born between 1801 and 1810) 1 Female - Under 5 years of Age 2 Females - Over 5 and Under 10 1 Female - Over 10 and Under 15 1 Female - Over 30 and Under 40 Neighbors: Adkins and Daugherty So, I am looking for a James Morton, Tilda Morton and Thomas Morton and families. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Nina
Rose-Anne Thanks so much for all your hard work. While I had read about my ggggreat grandfather Micah Sellers being in the book, I had not actually seen the article. I know I have still not "seen" the actual book, but you have made it possible to be another source in the process of documenting this man without having to travel far from home. Thanks again. Dear Conniesue, Thanks for your help. No, there's no chance he would have been in Georgia. And, I do know jdbootz; he is a cousin of mine through another line. Hi y'all... Well, it's taken more than a year (plus a new scanner and motherboard <g>) to complete this project, but here goes... Please visit the Knox County, TNGenWeb site and browse the online version of: "Sketches of Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers" by Rev. J.J. Burnett (1919). http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/tnbaptists/index.html Over 500 pages were OCR'd from this landmark text. This is an incredible resource, containing 211 biographies. Most biographies center on East Tennessee, but there's a healthy dose of Middle Tennessee folks thrown in, too (and a few West Tennesseans as well <g>). Please contact me directly if you find typos - I've proofread the pages many times, but typos are still being discovered. (Multiple sets of eyes are always helpful <g>). If you have more information about an individual on your website, drop me a line -- I'll stick a link at the bottom of that page for ya <g>. Kick the tires and let us know what you think -- and thanks again for your support! Rose-Anne (for Miz Billie)
Greetings to the list, I am researching my Gibson family line. In a nutshell: I have records showing the birth State of my Grandparents, Samuel Gibson and Mary "Mollie" Elizabeth Brown, as TN. Samuel was born around 1878 and Mollie around 1885. I do not have records showing that they were "born" in the Knoxville area, but know that they were in (or around) Knoxville in 1909. I have a 1909 Birth Record showing my Aunt Dorothy Evelyn (Samuel and Mary's second and only living child at the time of this birth) as being born in Knoxville, TN. Although Samuel and Mary are listed as being "from" TN, at the time of Dorothy's birth - their current residence as it is shown on this July 1909 BC as Middlesboro, KY. (Gee, and I thought my 1/2 commute to the hospital while in labor was long!) There is a column on the BC for the occupations of the parents, but neither my husband nor I can make out the handwriting. We think Samuel was working as either a "stationary trainman" or "stationary trimman". ??? We are sure of the stationary part, but cannot read the second word. I do know that in 1917 Samuel was working in Cleveland, OH as a switchman (railroad?) I am not familiar with the various (during this time period) occupations in rural KY/TN. Mollie (appropriate for the times) was a housewife. **Now, there is one curious piece of information on this BC that I cannot quite figure out. I have various other later documents all showing/confirming Mollie's maiden name as Brown, but on this BC it shows the mother's full maiden name as Miss Mollie Earrington (Carrington.) ????? I know that Mollie's middle name was Elizabeth, but the name shown after Mollie on this BC definitely is not Elizabeth. (Unless Earrington/Carrington was my Great-Grandmother's mai! den name?) Confusing. Sometime after 1909 Samuel and Mary moved from Middlesboro, KY (or Knoxville?) to Indianapolis, IN where, in January of 1916, my Aunt Violet Maxine Gibson was born. And then shortly after Violet was born, Samuel and Mary (& family) then moved on to Cleveland, OH where, in August of 1917, my Father Victor Raymond Gibson was born. On my Dad's BC it shows that Mary had 5 children, but only three lived - leaving me to presume that sometime between Dorothy and Violet, Mary either had a miscarriage or lost a child. I have various documents on Dorothy, Violet and my Dad, but I cannot seem to trace my Grandparents. I do not know where they died or where/if they are buried. I can only imagine that Samuel and Mary must have had siblings. Did anyone in the mid-late 1800's ever "choose" to have only "one" child? Anyway, I have no information on Samuel and Mary other than what I have presented here. Since my Dad was their last (known to me) child, I have searched for death re! cords for Samuel and Mary in Cuyahoga Co. (Cleveland) OH and have not been able to locate anything! If anything in my short family story rings familiar to you, please contact me. I truly hope that all is well in your corner of the world. Samuel ("Harry"?) Gibson b. 1878 - Mary "Mollie" Elizabeth Brown (Earrington/Carrington?) b. 1885 - Dorothy Evelyn (Gibson) Bart July 1909- Aug 1999 (no known children) Violet Maxine (Gibson) Robinson Jan 1916- June 1980 (no known children) Victor Raymond Gibson Aug 1917 - May 1971 Warm Regards, Virginia (Gibson) Di Donato Port Angeles, WA Searching: Gibson, Brown, Bart, Robinson - and now Earrington/Carrington?

Hello List, I have just subscribed and would like to ask if anyone knows anything about my Stricklands. I am Steve Strickland son of William Roy. My line is: George W., b. 1830-36, John Robert, b. 1878, William McKinley, b. 1901, William Roy, b. 1924. All born is GA except me. I was born in TN. George W. had, among others, two sons, Alexander S. and Lewallen, who left Gilmer County, GA, and moved into the Harriman, TN area. We do not know where exactly so I am searching all of east, TN. A family story is that both brothers got jobs at the Brushy Mt State Pen and that BOTH were killed on the job! However, I can find NO evidence to support the story. Another family story is that one of the brothers had a son named Frank who operated a house of ill repute. My challenge is to find where these two brothers wound up and track their descendants to see if I can get some help to get over my brick wall which is George W. their father. Whew. Long sentence. Thank you all in advance for any help. Steve Strickland

To Laurel Campbell. Do you know if your Campbells are related to the Crows in Augusta Co. VA? I have seen Hugh Campbell mentioned in my research of the Crows. I am trying to find proof that the Nancy (Campbell ?) that married Robert Crow was a daughter of Hugh or maybe Arthur Campbell in Augusta Co.VA and later moved to TN. Time frame: 1750-1800. Robert Crow was in Rev. War with Hugh and Arthur Campbell. Jackie MacKenzie

Some sank deep roots and others moved on, scattering our ancestors from coast to coast. Our purpose is to have fun, get acquainted, and swap genealogical information. The above is a list of the families which we know for sure had ties in early East Tennessee and the ones we have some information on. However, (Sorry all surnames are CLOSED Now) Contact Carl at <CousinsCom2@hotmail.com> or Terri at <CousinsCom1@hotmail.com>. All we ask is that you be willing to act as host or hostess/greeter for your surname and to share whatever info you have available. ALL surnames are welcome to attend whether your name is listed here or not! There will be a wealth of information to share. Plan on attending please! We Do Need A Head Count, To, NOT over book, However. (Numbers of persons coming) is needed. We would love to have volunteers for all the names on the list (except Brown and Coffman, which we have well-covered) to act as co-hosts/co-hostesses to greet and help people with their surname feel welcome and to help them meet researchers working on the same surname. To those of you with East TN roots who don't have much extended family and therefore don't have a reunion, this is your chance to bring your immediate family members and join ours. We want everyone to have fun, feel welcomed, and enjoy themselves. **That's What Tennessee Stands For: THE VOLUNTEER STATE ** "Where pride walks and the flag flies!"** We know that we have some college instructors attending who perhaps can be persuaded to speak. We also have experts and accredited genealogist who have been researching for 30 plus years. They are ready to share their information with us. ---------------------- Attendance is FREE . . . but we will have a "donation" jar to offset the cost for using the campground, tableware, entertainment, and clean up. PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING AND BRING: 1. First and foremost yourselves... 2. ALL BOOKS, BIBLES, PICTURES, FAMILY SHEETS, AND INFORMATION YOU HAVE AVAILABLE... 3. A covered dish to share. (For those who are traveling some distance and for whom this is not a feasible option, you may either bring a sack lunch or a non- perishable or deli item that can be picked up at last minute locally. 4. Drinks, ice chest 5. A chair or blanket to sit on...If you are serving as a host or hostess, you will also need a small table (card table size or larger) to display your family information on. -------------------------- Last year was our first attempt to pull all these early settlers' descendants together. As far as we knew, it had never been attempted before. It was a resounding success for a first attempt, and it was agreed that it should become an annual event. This area is so very rich in history, both as an Indian frontier and as an isolated jewel of Union sympathy during the Civil War. It also served as a departure point for westward movement and new settlement. Our ancestors left us a rich heritage, which we are striving to preserve and pass on to our children and grandchildren. This rich tapestry of ideals and values is what made us a great nation and what made each of us what we are today. And it began with our earliest immigrant ancestors who came here to start a new life and a new country. COME and SHARE that heritage with us on July 13-14. We are looking forward to making many new friends!! Sincerely, Terri Brown Jurca: <CousinsCom1@hotmail.com>, 5509 Paula Rd., Knoxville, Tn 37912 Carl Coffman: <CousinsCom2@hotmail.com> 1448 S. Dear Listers: Is there anyone out there that might be able to answer a question for me on the early censuses? My Campbells came from Augusta Co, VA to what is now Knox Co, TN in the 1790s. Looking at the censuses for 1800 - 1810 would this show up as Virginia? I find Campbells which match the given names of my line, but they are not listed in TN. I'm not really sure what County and State it would have been considered in those census years. Can anyone assist me? Thank you in advance Laurel Campbell _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
