    3. If they aren't a newsletter, what exactly are they? (just curious before I add more mail LOL) Alli ------------------------------------------------ Alli, This is what I got from Judy: No Conniesue, Circle of Nations is a newsletter, only reason I know is I write it!! Circle of First Nations is designed to aid all tribes and those searching for Native American ancestors. (Any questions directed to us we do our best to find the answers or point you in the direction to find them) We will provide new web pages URL's for our subscribers, ( any URL's that I find I provide a description of the site and a link to the site) additions to Native American Resource Center, ( Any new pages I add to Native American Resource Center and Native American Nations is featured in the newsletter) for example I have just created http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/dna.htm and items of interest submitted by our subscribers. (People haven't been great at submitting items of interest!) Sorry we will not be able to list searches for ancestors I also provide some information as to what is going on with me and my family, I know that part is real boring! But we do seem to have an interested group as there are over 500 members. I anyone would like to subscribe the URL is http://66.96.231.2/mailman/listinfo/circleofnations_nanations.com Thanks Judy ----------------------------------------------- When I asked her if they were two different things, this is what she told me: Circle of First Nation and Circle of First Nations are the same. When we put up http://my.nanations.com/ my partner, typed the wrong thing and I guess we have never gone back and changed that. On the my.nanations page it does not offer the words newsletter so we have to use list. That particular setup on that page doesn't allow us to do as much as we would like. We are working to get something set up there where people can post their brick walls and search questions. Thanks for asking Judy --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. What does it matter? You know she was married to your father. The world is very sexist and many women don't even use a husband's surname anymore. I think it is wonderful for a woman to keep her birth surname---after all, the tradition of taking a husband's surname comes from the idea that she was his property. -----Original Message----- From: DRice78942@aol.com [mailto:DRice78942@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2002 1:54 PM To: TNKNOX-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TN-KNOX] Re. 3. Drice, Is your main concern that the descendants in the future will not know this is their ancestor because they will assume she never married therefore never had children or are the children uncomfortable with her maiden name on the tombstone ? I think people in the future will know that when women in this time period divorced, they often took back their maiden name. She has documents to show she married and divorced. I assume that each of her children has a birth certificate that has the mother and father listed on it. If the descendants get that far, they will look for a marriage on her and maybe her divorce. I don't think it matters to her anymore. It only matters to her children, so put what all of you are comfortable with. 1. [TN-KNOX] Quakers in Knox County
    2. Does anyone have any information on a Quaker settlement in Knox county during the early 1800's? I seem to run onto snippets which indicate that the area around Hardin Valley and Hickory Creek was populated by Quakers. My ancestor George Thomas Holmes was born there, and his parents migrated to Knox county from North Carolina. Any information would be appreciated. Archie Holmes

    3. Hi Archie, I don't know if this will help or not, but here goes <g>: --------- From: Rule's Standard History of Knoxville, Tennessee (1900). The following paragraph is taken from the online transcription of Chapter 14 - "Transportation": http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/history/rule/chap14c.html "From Knoxville the Knoxville Southern, as it was originally called, but which is at the present time known as the Atlanta, Knoxville & Northern railroad, runs through an agricultural country, until it reaches Louisville, fourteen miles from Knoxville, and six miles further on reaches Friendsville, an old Quaker settlement. Madisonville, the county seat of Monroe county, is forty-four miles from Knoxville. Jellico Junction is sixty-one miles and Wetmore, at the head of navigation on the Hiwassee river is sixty-seven miles from Knoxville. From this place there is weekly steamboat connection with Knoxville and Chattanooga." -------- Also -- according to an old email (2000) from another researcher: "Records of the Friendsville Quaker settlement have been copied and are available at the library in Maryville, Blount Co TN. Probably the East TN Historical Society also has them available in their library in Knoxville." ------ Here's an interesting article online about Friendsville and the Quaker's part in the Underground Railroad: http://www.mtsu.edu/~tncivwar/ugrr/page5.html ----- Good luck in your search!
