My problem is this: Isaac and Mary McPherson's family were part of those McPhersons who came down from Giles Co., VA, in the late 1700s and settled in and around the Knox/Roane Co., TN, area. I have been unable to determine anything about them between their arrival from VA and when they showed up in De Kalb Co., AL, in the 1830s-40s. I would like to determine where they were (probably in E. TN?) and where and when their children were married. Also, Isaac and Mary may have been in Bledsoe Co., TN, in the mid 1830s. Isaac (b. VA, c. 1767 or 1778) and Mary (VA, c. 1780) McPherson's children were as follows: (1) Cely McPherson (b. c. 1795), m. Bennett Norman son of Isaac Norman. In 1835 Isaac Norman lived on Bull Run Creek in Anderson Co., TN. I believe that Cely and Bennett were living in McMinn Co., TN, in 1830-1840. (2) Isaac McPherson, Jr. (b. c. 1796), m. 1st. c. 1821 to Elizabeth Kennedy possibly in Washington Co., TN. (3) Enos Marion McPherson (b. c. 1801.Giles Co., VA), m. Mahala Jane Daughtery. Enos was a Methodist Preacher and in 1830 he was in White Co., TN. In 1840 he was in Bledsoe Co., TN, and in 1850 he was in De Kalb Co., AL. He later moved to AR. (4) Lewis A. (?) McPherson (b. 1800-1810, VA?), m. c. 1818-20 to Rachel ? Lewis was in AL by 1840. (5) George Washington McPherson (b. 1807-10), m. c. 1831 to Mary Kitchens(?). Some children were b. in TN. This family was in AL by 1840. (6) Jane ("Jenny") McPherson (b. c. 1813, TN), m. c. 1845 to William F. Willis (7) Mary E. (or F.?) McPherson ( b. 1814-15), m. c. 1831 to James Taylor. They may have been in McMinn Co., TN, in 1830 but was in AL in 1840. They were in Pontotoc, MS in 1850. (8) Joseph McPherson (b. c. 1822, TN), m. c. 1843, Prob. De Kalb Co., AL, to Martha Amanda Scott (9) William McPherson (b. 1800-10, TN), m. ? I believe that in 1836 and 1840 he was living in Marion Co., TN. I'll appreciate hearing from anyone who can possibly help me with this problem. Paul Paul R. White WhitePaul@aol.com Ph (256)536-0693 1408 East Olive Drive SE Huntsville, AL 35801
I am going to Knoxville,Tennessee in November and one of the searches I want to look for is my ggrandfather Reverend Stephen Hill and his connections to where he might have preached in the city and the surrounding area, this is what I know: Stephen Hill was born October 17, 1837 in Tennessee ,exact location unknown but most likely Knox County, he was probably a son of one of the children of Spencer Hill, died 1814 Battle of Horseshoe Bend 1812 War and Mary Jones Hill who married second to John Hubbs in Grainger County Tennessee 1819 1850 KNOX COUNTY,TN census Mary HUBBS ,55 born VA Irena 38, born TN Hugh 24 Martin 21 Dorcus PHIPPS 27 John 10 Barbary 8 Stephen HILL 14 1860 KNOX COUNTY, TN census,Postoffice Woodbourne 1315 Hugh HUBBS 36 Mary 25 sarah 9 Nancy ? 5 Amelia 3 Margret 6/12 1316 James HUBBS 40 farmer Elisabeth 40 elisabeth 20 Raichal 13 Fanny 11 Margret 5 Jemes ? 1 (male) 1317 Mary HUBBS 72 farmer John PHIPPS 20 farming Irena HILL 37 Stephen 22 STEPHEN HILL October 17, 1837 Tennessee- May 18, 1897 Tennessee later REVEREND STEPHEN HILL Footprints Union County Tennessee cemeteries page 108 Stephen's parentage is unknown From Hubbs-Frost and Allied families "Rev. I have no proof yet of wether Irena is Stephen's mother, seems likely but who is the father ? This is one of my research high points ,trying to find documents around that time filed at either Union ,Grainger or Knox county that might be a clue. Of interest too is the fact that in 1855 Nancy Hill Smith filed a lawsuit against her half brother Hugh Hubbs for the paternity of her son born 5 march 1855 he was ordered to pay support for three years Monday May 7th 1855 The State vs. Hugh Hubbs Bastardy. Stehen Hill dead. Well Known Baptist Minister Passes Away One of Knoxville's most respected citizens, REv. Stephen Hill, died at his home on Norht Central avenue yesterday morning. He is one of the best known Baptist ministers in this section and the news of his death will be quite a shock to his many friends in this city and the surrounding country. He was sick for only a short time with typhoid fever and even his family did not think him dangerously ill until the day before he died. Mr. Hill leaves a wife and five children. The funeral will be conducted from the residence this morning and the remains will be interred in Hubb's burying ground a few miles east of the city. Deceased entered the ministry when he was forty years of age and for the last twenty-five years of his life he has preached at different places around the country. He is well known throughout this city. He spent several years of his life preaching to the poorer classes on the streets and in houses where the poor could hear him. His was a very useful life and he will be remembered by unfortunates of this city. I want to find out what Churches in the area might he have been part of that would have records of him. Thank you Raymond Fred Dennis
Elsie, Thank you for your quick response. I will check the tax records. I just ordered a book on Eastern TN history. Hopefully, it will list churches in that area around 1800. Hello Listers, I have just joined your list in hopes that someone can steer me in the right direction. I have an ancestor, Hugh Campbell, born 1801 in Knox County, TN. His father was Robert Campbell (born circa 1760-1770 in VA or NC). I do not know the name of his mother. Some of his sibilings MAY have been Jeremiah, Matthew, Nancy (married Thomas Rodgers), Isaac, Secula (married John Wallace). This was gleaned from Robert's will in Shelby County, Indiana, 1836. The family moved to TN when Robert was given a land grant for his war services (Revolutionary?). I believe that most of the family then moved to Shelby County, IN about 1822. I know that father Robert was living with Hugh in Shelby Co. in 1830. Hugh married Chaney Ray in Shelby Co., IN in 1824. There are so many Campbell lines, I have really become frustrated. If anyone out there has any information on this line, I would really appreciate it. My frustration is not helped by the fact that there are no existing censuses for Knox Co. in 1810 and 1820. Thank you for any help. I have information on Hugh's descendants to share. Thank you so much for putting the information regarding the Deaf School online. My great grandmother's sister, Margaret "Maggie" Brooks became deaf as a small child. She is listed as a student in 1877 Maggie was also orphaned as a small child and she later went to Laclede County, MO to be with her sister, my great grandmother, Elizabeth Brooks Sing. It was there that she met and married her husband, William Henry Turner, who later became a judge in Laclede County. Maggie's thirst for knowledge was nourished in her time at the Deaf School. She read all of Shakespeare and when she died, her obituary stated that she was the most beloved woman in Lebanon, Missouri. She and Judge Turner raised two children. Phyllis Wilson Carpenter
This is a fantastic site. My ggreat grandmother was deaf, which I knew about but her branch of the family tree was a mystery. I had contacted the school two years ago and very helpful kindergarten teacher helped me verify her attendance, but this site "officially" shows her attendance and where her family lived. I now must find proof that she is truly linked to the other CAPERTON family since her father died in 1850 and the family was scattered. Thank you for the work that went into putting this site on-line. Donna Millican
Hi y'all.... I'm pleased to announce the first installment of excerpts from "100th Anniversary of the Tennessee School for the Deaf 1845-1945" http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/schools/tsd/index.html At this point, we have the "History of the School", "History of the Negro Department", as well as lists of teachers, matrons, and the 2,803 pupils that were enrolled in the school from its opening in 1845 through the 1944-5 school year. Each pupil roster includes the year(s), the pupil's name, community and TN county (otherwise covers community, state for those outside TN). A link back to the county selection page at TNGenWeb is included, so our researchers can "read up" on their particular counties ;-) http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/schools/tsd/students.htm Likewise, there's a link on the "Summary by Counties" page: http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/schools/tsd/enrollment.htm Please "kick the tires" and let us know what you think. I hope this is helpful to everyone.... Rose-Anne Co-host, Knox County, TNGenWeb

Hi y'all..... We've added a few new items at the Knox Co., TNGenWeb site --stop by and check it out! http://www.wdbj.net/~tnknox/updates/index.html 1). Did your kin serve on the old Knoxville Police or Fire Departments? If so, we have two neat old yearbooks for you! a). Knoxville Fire & Police Departments - 1900. This yearbook includes rosters of current (as of June, 1900) officers in both departments, as well as GREAT historical sketches about early law enforcement and fire fighting in Knoxville! There's even a short paragraph about the role of the Police Matron (sounds like an early social worker!) b). Knoxville Fire Department Yearbook for 1951-1952. The Fire Dept. historical sketch continues, as well as a listing of all current AND deceased fire dept. members. **If anyone can find an available Police Yearbook for this same time period, I'd love to get it online, too ** 2). We've added another church yearbook -- Fourth Presbyterian Church, Knoxville (1928). This little book includes history of the church (organized in 1886) as well as a listing of all communicants with addresses. 3). Two more school annuals are online -- Rule High School, Knoxville (1945) and Karns High School, Knox Co. (1945). The Rule annual covers grades 7-12, while the Karns annual extends from grades 1-12. Also - the Karns annual gives the names and addresses for parents of Juniors and Seniors (which may come in handy once we get to see the 1930 census ;-)). Come by and visit with us! I believe they have found the 1810 Grainger county census now. I suppose it was tucked away in some forgotten corner. The census was copied with one copy sent to Washington and one being retained in the county. That's another reason why sometimes there are errors in our families. Karen
Hi list, what was the first census that TN was in - 1810, 1820? Could someone do a lookup for the James Milliken (Milikin, Millican, Milligan)family?
