Still seeking information on the family of Samuel RIGGS, born 1760 in Morris Co, NJ and died between 1845 and 1850 in Hawkins Co, TN at age 85+. Samuel RIGGS was a Lieutenant in East TN Militia in the Cherokee Wars starting when he was about 17 years of age during the Revolutionary War. He settled in Hawkins County in East TN about 1790 and lived there until his death. His TWO Rev War Pension Applications are on the Hawkins County, TN TNGENWEB homepage. What was his wifes name? What were his children's names, we think two of his children were Jesse RIGGS shown in Hawkins Co, TN in 1850 Census and John RIGGS, Justice of the Peace in Hawkins Co, TN in 1845 (John RIGGS "Will" is on the TNGENWEB page for Hawkins County). We have determined to our satisfaction that Samuel RIGGS was the son of Edward RIGGS [1720--1820] who died in Jefferson Co, TN. In 1820 Samuel was operating a Whiskey Making Factory in Hawkins Co, TN. During the Depression the WPA's "Copying Historical Records Project #465-44-3-115, July 1938:" shows: RIGGS Graveyard: Located on the farm of Hardee DOUGHERTY, half a mile north of Russellville on the Three Springs Road. It is supposed that Jesse RIGGS is buried here beside his wife..... Sam RIGGS, the father of Jesse, is buried in an unmarked grave on an adjacent farm..... The two tombsones in RIGGS Cemetery are: Mary RIGGS, Consort of Jesse RIGGS, Born 1797; Died Sept 1845 and Mary TAYLOR, Daughter of Jesse & Mary RIGGS, born 1821, Died 1845." (A Jesse RIGGS had married a Mary HENDERSON in Jefferson County, TN on 07 Jan 1821!!!!) The following RIGGS family is one of two RIGGS families shown in Hawkins Co, TN in the 1850 Census: Jesse RIGGS, age 55; William, age 26; Sarah, age 38; Adeline , age 12. The family of the LATE John RIGGS is shown as: Mary W. RIGGS, age 43; Thompson, age 17; Jane, age 15; James, age 15; Pleasant, age 11. This RIGGS Graveyard is now located in Hamblen Co, TN (created in 1870)!!!! Could someone try to locate this graveyard. It is not shown in the list of Cemetery's on the Hamblen Co, TN homepage!!!! Also we would like to know the location of Samuel RIGGS grave!!!!! It is probably marked by a simple fieldstone if it still exists!!!!! Also, did Samuel RIGGS have a "Will"? If not, are there court records on the disposition of his property at his death? Any help on Samuel RIGGS immediate family, ie, wife, children, etc. will be appreciated. Bobby G. Carwile
