Hello. I am researching African American ancestors who lived in New Market, Jefferson County TN. My grandfather, Boyce Richardson, worked for the railroad which ran through New Market and was also a brickmason. He and my grandmother, Emma Winston Richardson, had a large family. He died in 1923, but the state has no death certificate, although I understand that Nashville had started keeping these records by that time. I have been unable to locate any records which would identify his father. My mother and her siblings did not know his name (all but one are now deceased). Grandmother died when I was 3 years old. Boyce was born near Spartanburg SC. where the Richardson surname is quite common. My mother told me that the casket for his funeral was provided by the local hardware merchant. Does anyone know of any local sources that might be available about his death or burial practices there? He was probably buried in the AME Church cemetery in New Market as he was a member. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated. Pat Perry
Pat, You might try newspaper abstracts, funeral homes and by all means check for church records. I looked in my phone book (goes as far as Jefferson City which is the next town) and it does not contain New Market. (If you blink, your through New Market) The Knoxville phone book was no help either. Funeral homes know where the cemeteries are and the only one I found listed for New Market: Fielden Funeral Home 910 Churchview St. New Market 865.475.3468 They might be able to tell you how things were done in the area at the time. Nashville did keep records, I have my ggrandmothers and she died 1914. Look for mortality records for Jefferson Co., TN. If you cant locate any online, check with the LDS they have a wealth of documents on microfilm & etc. that you can research at a Temple near you or check with your library and see if they can obtain them through interlibrary loan. The railroad is the Norfork which runs through there, they possible may have some records. Good hunting. Patti >Hello. Patricia, It's a long shot, but have you checked for an obituary on your ancestor? What about looking for his siblings death certificates? Sometimes that's the only way you can find a connection between generation.
