I have a Courtney family group that did this, and I'm trying to give some thought to why they went to Knox County. If you have a Jefferson County family that headed into Knox County, KY, between 1850 and 1860, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Regards, Morgan H Courtney
My family did not move to Kentucky. However in the early to mid 1800's my family who lived in the Oak Grove Community near present day Dandridge drove herds of cattle, pigs, etc. from KY to South Carolina and then returned to Jefferson County, TN. The food was to supply the militia and to support the local economy there. This was not an uncommon event for Tennessee residents. I know that several families from Rowan NC also did this. The land in Kentucky had a different soil type and produced different crops for market also. Hemp ropes were the best for ships, farm use, etc. and the soil in KY produced a better crop. It was grown there to make ropes until the bottom fell out of the market. Many people lost small fortunes there. When coal was found in the eastern mountains, many people when into mining.
