Received the followinig from National Archives in response to order for copy of Military Record of Jesse BRIMER [1770--1814]. Dear Researcher: Prior to 1912, the War Department did not maintain individual personnel files for Regular Army enlisted men. At the time of enlistment, the recruiting officer completed an enlistment paper. The information on that paper was then entered in a large bound volume called an enlistment register. These registers identify the unit to which the soldier was assigned, and include a "Remarks" column. This column sometimes contains information regarding the soldier's service, but in most cases provides only the basic details concerning his departure from the Army, such as by death, desertion, or discharge. (In the case of discharge, a single discharge paper was prepared and given to the soldier. The War Department did not retain a copy.) We are enclosing copies of enlistment papers for (NONE EXTANT): Jesse BRIMER The following information is taken from the enlistment register: Unit in which soldier served: 7th U. S. Infantry Remarks: Company Commander - Captain Jas. DOHERTY Physical Description - 5' 10", blue eyes, fair hair, light complexion Age - 43 years Where born - North Carolina Enlisted - 14 June 1813 in Tenn for 5 years by Capt. DOHERTY Company Book 1813 & 1814, present at Dandridge, 14 Jun 1813; at Knoxville, 06 Oct 1813; and at Highwassee, 07 Nov 1813; died February 10 or 11, 1814 at Highwassee Garrison, Tennessee - see Pension Case (Book 668) This leads me to believe that a Pension was applied for by either his wife or children. I have ordered a copy of a Pension File on him and was told that there was NONE by an archivist on 27 Aug 1999. Why would a reference be made to a PENSION CASE in "Book 668" if none existed?????? The Archivist did NOT look in Book 668 and give that information. I hope this will be of use to a family researcher on one of the genealogy forums. Jesse BRIMER was the father of Sabra BRIMER who married Peter CARWILE on 17 Nov 1830 in Jefferson Co, TN. Peter CARWILE was my 2nd Great-grandfather. Bobby G. Carwile
