This is what I have on Gideon MORRIS from various sources.......Most on a sheet with note: Contributed by Mrs. Clifford (Gladys) MILLER of Jefferson City, TN (year 1988 written in margin of page) Gideon MORRIS, Sr. was born ca 1745 NC or VA (OR possibly NJ) and died in 1798 in Jefferson County (now Hamblen), Tennessee. He married ca 1769 Jennet RIGGS, (Jennet was probably the daughter of Edward RIGGS??????) who died before 1829 in Jefferson County (now Hamblen), Tennessee. Parents of Gideon may have been John and Elizabeth MORRIS. Gideon MORRIS served in the American Revolutionary War, signed the Watauga Petition 1776, was a Baptist Minister and a farmer. He owned land in Washington, Greene and Jefferson Counties. He was granted 400 acres of land from the state of NC in the County of Greene, (now Hamblen). A part of this 400 acres, he gave to build the Town of Morristown, which is named after the MORRIS family. Known children of Gideon MORRIS and Jennet Riggs MORRIS were: 1. John MORRIS, born 18 Nov 1770 and died 06 July 1843. He married 10 Oct 1811 to Rachel REECE in Jefferson Co, TN. The sheet I am taking this information from states that John had to have been married before, because on the 1830 census he had a son 20--30 years old, and he had only been married to his wife Rachel 18 years at that time.......... 2. Elizabeth MORRIS, born ca 1772 and died before 1817. Married ca 1790 to man named HURST (maybe Hiram HURST)...... 3. Mary "Polly" MORRIS, born ca 1774 and died 1829--1830. Married ca 1794 to Samuel RIGGS (son of Edward RIGGS, 1720--1820). Samuel RIGGS is on the 1830 Census of Hawkins Co, TN with 3 sons; 1 age 10--15; 1 age 15--20; and 1 age 30--40 (son Jesse). Samuel was listed at age 70--80 (He was actually born on 04 April 1760 in Morris County, New Jersey and died between 1845--1850.). Samuel RIGGS served in the Revolutionary War as an enlisted man and an Officer (Lieutenant). His Rev War Pension Applications are on the Hawkins Co, TN webpage. The following was found on RECORDS OF HAMBLEN COUNTY - TOMBSTONE RECORDS, by the Copying Historical Records Project #465-44-3-115, July, 1938: RIGGS GRAVEYARD: Located on the farm of Hardee DOUGHERTY, half a mile north of Russellville on the Three Springs Road. It is supposed that Jesse RIGGS is buried here by his wife. Sam (Samuel) RIGGS, the father of Jesse, is buried in an unmarked grave on an adjacent farm. Before the RIGGS owned the land, it was owned by GALBREATH; and LOY and ECKELS (sic) have owned it since the RIGGS, but it has been in the DOUGHERTY family many years. Hardee DOUGHERTY lives in the old RIGGS home, which has been greatly improved. This information is given by Hardee DOUGHERTY. The two tombstones in the RIGGS Cemetery are: Mary RIGGS, Consort of Jesse RIGGS, Born 1797; Died Sept. 1845. Mary TAYLOR, Daughter of Jesse & Mary RIGGS, Born 1821; Died 1845. NOTE: Does this RIGGS GRAVEYARD still exist??????? 4. Margaret "Peggy" MORRIS, born ca 1776, married 07 Nov 1794 to James ANDERTON (Anderson). In 1830, they had 4 sons and 1 Daughter. Peggy and James both must have died and are buried in Jefferson Co, TN. 5. Nancy MORRIS, born ca 1779, died after 1850. Married (#1) Isaac WILSON on 18 March 1800 in Jefferson Co, TN. They had one child, Isaac WILSON, Jr. Nancy then married (#2) John CROW on 10 August 1804 in Jefferson Co, TN. On the 1830 Census they had six sons and 3 daughters. 6. Gideon MORRIS, Jr. was born ca 1781 and died ca 1842. Married 22 Feb 1807 to Rebecca CROW in Grainger Co, TN. 7. Shadrach MORRIS was born ca 1783, married Nancy RIGGS 06 March 1804 in Grainger Co, TN. On the 1830 Census, they lived in Jefferson County and had 4 sons and 5 daughters. Who were Nancy RIGGS parents? She was either the daughter of Edward RIGGS [1720--1820] or MOST LIKELY his son Jesse RIGGS [1758--1831] who was born in Morris Co, NJ and died in Lincoln Co, TN. I hope this is of some use to someone. Bobby G. Carwile
