My family did not move to Kentucky. However in the early to mid 1800's my family who lived in the Oak Grove Community near present day Dandridge drove herds of cattle, pigs, etc. from KY to South Carolina and then returned to Jefferson County, TN. The food was to supply the militia and to support the local economy there. This was not an uncommon event for Tennessee residents. I know that several families from Rowan NC also did this. The land in Kentucky had a different soil type and produced different crops for market also. Hemp ropes were the best for ships, farm use, etc. and the soil in KY produced a better crop. It was grown there to make ropes until the bottom fell out of the market. Many people lost small fortunes there. When coal was found in the eastern mountains, many people when into mining. They were in Jackson County in the 1840 census with six children, all but one born in Alabama. By 1850 they were in Polk County Arkansas with 8 children. I am asuming they are some of the Swedish Longacres because of their proximity but I haven't been able to connect them. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you, thank you for getting this on-line, and for the effort to restore the cemetery. I have just filled in some blanks in my research. I am named for Deborah Massengill Branner, wife of John Branner (1822-1869). She was the half sister of my great-great-grandmother Rebecca Cathren Massengill. My father, who knew his great grandmother, said that Rebecca was reared by her sister after the death of their father when Rebecca was 18 months old. "Aunt Debbie" was well spoken of. She was said to be kind, generous, and loving. I would love to be thought of as highly decades after my death. Deborah Gaudier Houston TX
I am looking for information about my Great Grandmother, Lara (Laura) Randle(s) Haworth. She is listed in the Jefferson County, Tennessee 1880 census as being 19 years old, her husband Richard Haworth was 52. She and Richard had five children by 1891, Dora, Ladoska Lee, Charles, Owen, and Rachel. Sometime after 1891 Lara left her family, and to my knowledge was never heard from again. Her sister Mary was married to Calvin McGee, and lived in the New Market/Jefferson County, TN area. I have a partial letter written to Mary, Jan 14, 1929 from Sinton, Texas. The writer refers to her as $ister Mary, making their S look similar to a dollar mark. Apparently some family had relocated to Sinton....but who? This seems to be an endless search....any help would be appreciated Pam McCurry

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nhB.2ACI/1242 Message Board Post: Looking for information on the James R. Jenks family that is listed in the 1870 Census for Jefferson Co. TN Pg. 497 B. District 12, Watts Foundry. 41 Jenks, James R. 53 VA Sarah L 44 NC Margaret 16 TN David J TN James 12 TN Vesta J. 9 TN Jerry 7 TN Charles 3 TN Alfred 1 TN also listed in his household is: Ricker, Sarah 29 SC John W. 11 TN Isabelle 9 TN George 5 TN Marion F. 2 TN Falks, Elizabeth 32 TN Sarah 9 TN I am interested in his relationship with Sarah Ricker and her children. I belive Sarah Ricker was the mother of my Gg grandfather Nathan Dempsey Ricker and his brother Benjamin Franklyn Ricker. Her children John, Susan Isabelle, George Washington Ricker were the children of Joseph Page Ricker who was killed in the Civil War. All other children did not belong to him, but took the Ricker surname. We can not find this family again anywhere. I belive that the Marion F. Ricker listed is Benjamin Franklyn Ricker. As they were born in the same year, and there was talk of a name change at some point in "Frank's" life. Dempse and Frank married sisters, Mary Jane and Flore Bradford and moved to Texas in the early 1900's. I have been unable to locate them anywhere in TNN, I have receipt for Dempse Ricker for the amount of $1.00 for Property taxes of the year 1894, paid Feb. 4, 1895 in Greeneville, Greene Co TNN. We belive that the younger children were of James Jenks, but no proof is found. We just know that after 1870 the entire family seems to dissapear and cant be located. Sarah shows back up in Greene Co. TNN in 1891 on the Widows list and applies for Pension. According to a family bible kept by Flore Bradford Ricker, the mother of Dempse and Frank was Sarah Woods, daughter of Hezzie Car Woods and Bettsie Nights. and the father was James Ricker. the Sarah found in the 1870 Census with James Jenks is the daughter of Zedekiah (sometimes called Hezekiah) and Elizabeth Knight. The boys are NOT those of Joseph Ricker, and we can make no link to Sarah and a James Ricker. But she is linked with James Jenks. If this family is familiar to anyone i hope that it may hold the key to our ancestry as I suspect we are Jenks' decendants rather than Ricker's. Thanks. Rachell chadl@gorge.net
