Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/nhB.2ACI/1250.1.1.1 Message Board Post: The following website had this information: http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/maps.htm 2) WHERE IS A PARTICULAR CIVIL DISTRICT? There is a series of 1836 maps for many counties that shows civil district boundaries with descriptions. The Beers Company demographic maps and the Division of Geology - Post Office series also show the configuration of civil districts at particular times. Census compendia (1870 and 1880) and descriptions of census enumeration districts (1900 and 1910) can provide communities and place-names associated with certain civil districts. All these sources must be used with caution, since civil district boundaries may shift frequently. Boundary line changes may be gleaned from the Acts of Tennessee. I know that the boundries do shift. I have a map of 1836 Greene county that shows current districts and proposed new districts. The answer to your question is probably that the number of the district around Bent Creek changed during a re-alignment. Hope this helps. Patrick

Surnames: Courtney Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nhB.2ACI/1250.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Patrick, Thanks for the response to my inquiry. I have seen that map before (through the Jefferson County website), although it's a bit difficult to make much out. However, I would agree that Bent Creek should fall in the 15th district (according to the 1836 map). The problem that I've run into is that I recently went through the deed index, where I found a number of transactions for Courtney's buying/selling land on Bent Creek. In some entries, only Bent Creek is noted. In others, Bent Creek - 15th C.D. is noted. The problem is that when I go to the 1850 census, the same individuals who were purchasing land on Bent Creek, are enumerated in the 13th C.D. This makes things a bit difficult because I have a number of individuals sharing like names (William Courtney, James Courtney, etc.), so it's important for me to know precisely which district Bent Creek fell in. I need to somehow figure out why they are enumerated in the 13th district, when the land they purchased should be in the 15th district. Any suggestions? Morgan

    3. This is a response to Janice's questions related to a cemetery in Talbott. We were having a discussion about whether Talbott was in Jefferson or Hamblen counties. I finally got a response from my sister, who lives in Hamblen, but goes to church in Talbott in Jefferson Co. She talked to a former postmaster at Talbott, who said the post office moved from Jefferson County to Hamblen County in 1977. Also, most of Talbott's land area is in Jefferson, but most of the people with a Talbott address live in Hamblem, due to subdivisions in Hamblen. Bill

    1. Re: [TNJefferson] OLD GRAHAM CEMETERY
    2. L Bennett
    3. The easiest way to reach the Graham Cemetery is to go from Knoxville on north Interstate 81 take the Interstate 40 exit toward Newport. Exit at the first exit on I-40. At the end of the exit ramp turn right. About a block or so you will reach Highway US 25W/70 (that goes to Newport). You will be at a stop sign. Go straight across this highway. You will be on a narrow paved country road. Go .5 mile. There will be an older home on the right setting off a bend in the road. Next immediately on the right you will come to a newer house up on the hill. This is the Loveday (or Lovelady) house. The driveway is around the curve from the older house. These people can direct you to the cemetery which is on the property line of their land. When you cross Hwy US25/70 if you look to the left you can see the Swann Bridge across the French Broad River. Between that intersection and the cemetery, up on a hill on the left you will pass the Sehorn United Methodist Church and Cemetery. I have not found any Grahams there only a few Sehorn relatives. The next landmark is a Baptist Church sitting down near the water. The older house is just past this church on the right. There are three Revolutionary soldiers buried at the cemetery. Capt. John Sehorn, operator of Sehorn Ferry, a friend of John Sevier, and the father of John Sehorn, JR.; Sgt. George Graham, founder of Graham Chapel and his wife, Elizabeth Turnley Graham; and Pvt. John Turnley and his wife. And many of their family members. The listing of graves for this cemetery is in one of the Jefferson County Cemetery books.
