I am a new subscriber to the list and searching for any information on Arabia Brown and Catherine Brittain who were married in Jefferson Co. Tenn. Aug. 9, 1807 bondsman John Morrow, Wit. Sam Scott. In 1820 they are found on Stewart Co. Tenn. census with two males under 10 and three females under 10 and 1 10-16. I don't know what year they left Jefferson Co. but they evidentally didn't stay long there. Both are listed in later census records as born in Virginia. I wonder if they had relation in Jefferson Co. Other Brittains who married in Jeff. Co. were William Brittain & Fanny King May 4, 1794 and Betsy Brittain & Allen Puckett Aug. 9, 1810. Any relation to Catherine? Need info on who their parents were or any info found on them in county. Dorothy
Received the followinig from National Archives in response to order for copy of Military Record of Jesse BRIMER [1770--1814]. Dear Researcher: Prior to 1912, the War Department did not maintain individual personnel files for Regular Army enlisted men. At the time of enlistment, the recruiting officer completed an enlistment paper. The information on that paper was then entered in a large bound volume called an enlistment register. These registers identify the unit to which the soldier was assigned, and include a "Remarks" column. This column sometimes contains information regarding the soldier's service, but in most cases provides only the basic details concerning his departure from the Army, such as by death, desertion, or discharge. (In the case of discharge, a single discharge paper was prepared and given to the soldier. The War Department did not retain a copy.) We are enclosing copies of enlistment papers for (NONE EXTANT): Jesse BRIMER The following information is taken from the enlistment register: Unit in which soldier served: 7th U. S. Infantry Remarks: Company Commander - Captain Jas. DOHERTY Physical Description - 5' 10", blue eyes, fair hair, light complexion Age - 43 years Where born - North Carolina Enlisted - 14 June 1813 in Tenn for 5 years by Capt. DOHERTY Company Book 1813 & 1814, present at Dandridge, 14 Jun 1813; at Knoxville, 06 Oct 1813; and at Highwassee, 07 Nov 1813; died February 10 or 11, 1814 at Highwassee Garrison, Tennessee - see Pension Case (Book 668) This leads me to believe that a Pension was applied for by either his wife or children. I have ordered a copy of a Pension File on him and was told that there was NONE by an archivist on 27 Aug 1999. Why would a reference be made to a PENSION CASE in "Book 668" if none existed?????? The Archivist did NOT look in Book 668 and give that information. I hope this will be of use to a family researcher on one of the genealogy forums. Jesse BRIMER was the father of Sabra BRIMER who married Peter CARWILE on 17 Nov 1830 in Jefferson Co, TN. Peter CARWILE was my 2nd Great-grandfather. Bobby G. Carwile
List Members: The following was sent to me by a very nice person, and I thought I would share it with you as there are many familiar surnames included. ...Marjorie =================================== >From Sevier County Republican---28 Feb 1940 Contributed by Donald B. Reagan Old Letter Reveals Interesting History of Sevierville---Letter written by M.A. Rawlings in 1856 is 84 years old. Tells of the burning of Sevierville...small village at that time and the 43 houses burned just about wiped out the town. Some of the settlers who came from Shenandoah co VA Denton, Lichlyter, Lewis, Jones, Spangler, Clevenger, Seehorn and others...From NC came Halls, McCoigs, Brimers and Cowans. Next paragraph continues with: Bea wrote: "As a small child, I grew up on Indian Creek Road. As I drive or walk down that road, I can recall each and every home. First, there was the home of the Halls, then George Hall, whose father was Perry Hall who married Edah Brimer, d/o Thomas, who was in turn, the s/o Vineyard Brimer. Then the Wm Taylor farm...Wm md Mary Livingston...large family. Next the Lewis family...included Templins, Holberts, Stranges, McCoigs, Fines, Masons and many more who had settled between 1786-1820....Beyond the Taylor Schoolhouse was the Lichlyter Cemetery, now the Lawson Chapel Cemetery where all related families were buried. Most of these were Methodists. James Baker left a will in Jefferson Co, TN in 1801 witnessed by James Hodges. The trustee for the will was Richard Bailey. Would like to have any clue that would help identify the family of this James Baker. Was he the son of Thomas Baker and wife, Dorothy Davenport, of Culpeper, VA? Was he the son of Andrew "Esquire" Baker of Grayson Co, VA? What is the connection to the Randolph family? Did this James Baker (or his son, James, Jr) marry Elizabeth Randolph? Was he a soldier in the American Revolution? Elizabeth Baker

Interesting story about Old Cemetery Restoration and Resurrection. Every County in America should have a Cemetery Restorator..........Click on URL below or type in web address. Too many cemeteries are being abandoned and neglected. Sometimes the only record of someone that a family genealogist can find is a tombstone inscription. When those are gone nothing remains for some. For those who don't click on URLS from strangers the web address is: http://www.starnews.com/extra/features/99/dec/1207st-cemetery.html C lick here: StarNews.com : Resurrecting cemeteries

Hello All, I was needing help from someone on the Grainger or Jefferson counties list, who may have the marriage books, to lookup a marriage for: Thomas Daniel Wollard/Woolard and Mary Mollie Linkous/Linkus. The marriage would have taken place between 1900-1910 in Grainger or Jefferson County. Most grateful for the help, John Linkes
