>From another list: From Jack Brissee, Chair, FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee: Subject: re: Cost of Military Records Going Up (NARA Statement) There have been postings on a number of mail lists recently about an increase in the fees the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) charges for copies of compiled military service records and pension records. While NARA is considering a change to the fee structure for these documents, the information that has been posted is both premature and somewhat inaccurate. The Records Preservation and Access Committee, a joint endeavor of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society, has contacted NARA officials for clarification. The following is the "official NARA statement" issued in response to our inquiry: -Begin NARA Statement: The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will be issuing a proposed rule within the next few weeks that will revise fees for reproduction, including the "fixed-fee" orders in the NATF 80 series. The proposed rule will have a 60-day public comment period, during which time we will actively seek the comments of the user community. The proposed rule is presently undergoing internal government review. When it is released for publication in the Federal Register, NARA will notify the national genealogical organizations and post a copy of the proposed rule on its web site. The message will include the exact URL and the address for sending comments. -End NARA Statement- The Records Preservation and Access Committee will continue to monitor this proposal, and will post relevant information on the Records Preservation and Access pages of the Federation of Genealogical Societies' Web site (http:www.fgs.org) when it is available. Please feel free to forward this posting to other mail lists on which the original posting may have appeared. Jack Brissee Chair, FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee

This is what I have on Gideon MORRIS from various sources.......Most on a sheet with note: Contributed by Mrs. Clifford (Gladys) MILLER of Jefferson City, TN (year 1988 written in margin of page) Gideon MORRIS, Sr. was born ca 1745 NC or VA (OR possibly NJ) and died in 1798 in Jefferson County (now Hamblen), Tennessee. He married ca 1769 Jennet RIGGS, (Jennet was probably the daughter of Edward RIGGS??????) who died before 1829 in Jefferson County (now Hamblen), Tennessee. Parents of Gideon may have been John and Elizabeth MORRIS. Gideon MORRIS served in the American Revolutionary War, signed the Watauga Petition 1776, was a Baptist Minister and a farmer. He owned land in Washington, Greene and Jefferson Counties. He was granted 400 acres of land from the state of NC in the County of Greene, (now Hamblen). A part of this 400 acres, he gave to build the Town of Morristown, which is named after the MORRIS family. Known children of Gideon MORRIS and Jennet Riggs MORRIS were: 1. John MORRIS, born 18 Nov 1770 and died 06 July 1843. He married 10 Oct 1811 to Rachel REECE in Jefferson Co, TN. The sheet I am taking this information from states that John had to have been married before, because on the 1830 census he had a son 20--30 years old, and he had only been married to his wife Rachel 18 years at that time.......... 2. Elizabeth MORRIS, born ca 1772 and died before 1817. Married ca 1790 to man named HURST (maybe Hiram HURST)...... 3. Mary "Polly" MORRIS, born ca 1774 and died 1829--1830. Married ca 1794 to Samuel RIGGS (son of Edward RIGGS, 1720--1820). Samuel RIGGS is on the 1830 Census of Hawkins Co, TN with 3 sons; 1 age 10--15; 1 age 15--20; and 1 age 30--40 (son Jesse). Samuel was listed at age 70--80 (He was actually born on 04 April 1760 in Morris County, New Jersey and died between 1845--1850.). Samuel RIGGS served in the Revolutionary War as an enlisted man and an Officer (Lieutenant). His Rev War Pension Applications are on the Hawkins Co, TN webpage. The following was found on RECORDS OF HAMBLEN COUNTY - TOMBSTONE RECORDS, by the Copying Historical Records Project #465-44-3-115, July, 1938: RIGGS GRAVEYARD: Located on the farm of Hardee DOUGHERTY, half a mile north of Russellville on the Three Springs Road. It is supposed that Jesse RIGGS is buried here by his wife. Sam (Samuel) RIGGS, the father of Jesse, is buried in an unmarked grave on an adjacent farm. Before the RIGGS owned the land, it was owned by GALBREATH; and LOY and ECKELS (sic) have owned it since the RIGGS, but it has been in the DOUGHERTY family many years. Hardee DOUGHERTY lives in the old RIGGS home, which has been greatly improved. This information is given by Hardee DOUGHERTY. The two tombstones in the RIGGS Cemetery are: Mary RIGGS, Consort of Jesse RIGGS, Born 1797; Died Sept. 1845. Mary TAYLOR, Daughter of Jesse & Mary RIGGS, Born 1821; Died 1845. NOTE: Does this RIGGS GRAVEYARD still exist??????? 4. Margaret "Peggy" MORRIS, born ca 1776, married 07 Nov 1794 to James ANDERTON (Anderson). In 1830, they had 4 sons and 1 Daughter. Peggy and James both must have died and are buried in Jefferson Co, TN. 5. Nancy MORRIS, born ca 1779, died after 1850. Married (#1) Isaac WILSON on 18 March 1800 in Jefferson Co, TN. They had one child, Isaac WILSON, Jr. Nancy then married (#2) John CROW on 10 August 1804 in Jefferson Co, TN. On the 1830 Census they had six sons and 3 daughters. 6. Gideon MORRIS, Jr. was born ca 1781 and died ca 1842. Married 22 Feb 1807 to Rebecca CROW in Grainger Co, TN. 7. Shadrach MORRIS was born ca 1783, married Nancy RIGGS 06 March 1804 in Grainger Co, TN. On the 1830 Census, they lived in Jefferson County and had 4 sons and 5 daughters. Who were Nancy RIGGS parents? She was either the daughter of Edward RIGGS [1720--1820] or MOST LIKELY his son Jesse RIGGS [1758--1831] who was born in Morris Co, NJ and died in Lincoln Co, TN. I hope this is of some use to someone. Bobby G. Carwile

Those of you who are researching the surname RUTHERFORD might be interested in the following information that was posted on GenForum: "Dear Fellow Rutherford Surname Genealogist: For those of you who have previously expressed an interest in obtaining a copy of the two-volume, hardbound set entitled "Genealogical History of the Rutherford Family" written by Kenneth and Anna Rutherford, please go to the website www.Rutherfordcpa.com to officially sign up for your copy. We are currently gathering enough pre-subscribers so that we can go to print. Anna Rutherford (one of the authors... she's 82 now!) has granted permission to have these books reprinted, but due to the enormous cost, we have to have at least 180 pre-subscribers at $150 per set. I also need your help!! I not only need you to sign up, but I need your family members, friends, associates, genealogical societies to sign up as well. The sooner we get 180, the sooner we can all get a copy of the set and move forward with our Rutherford research. Please sign up for multiple copies if you can!! Please do forward this email to anyone who would be interested in obtaining a copy. Who am I? I'm a fellow genealogist that wants a copy of this set so badly that I am willing to take on the massive project of corralling enough pre-subscribers to make the printing of this book happen." Craig - I am looking for the name of the husband of Lydia Davidson who was a Clark. She was disowned by the Quakers in Jefferson Co, TN for marrying out of the discipline to a Clark in 1799. My gggggrandfather, William Davidson, was born in Jan 1801. He married in Jefferson Co, TN in 1819 and on his marriage license and bond is listed as William Davidson alias Clark. I was told by a man in the genealogical Library there that Individuals were known by the last name of the farm that they lived on. So I'm thinking that he was a nephew of Lydia Davidson Clark and lived with that family or he was an orphan who was living there and working. If you know the names of any Clarks in Jefferson Co, TN, please let me know. - Amy Windsor -----Original Message----- From: Craig Beeman [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, February 10, 2000 6:49 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TNJefferson] CLARK of Jefferson Co., TN "Hello Cousins!"
