    1. Re: [TNSTEWAR-L] Surnames Cooley and Brown
    2. Teresa Beech
    3. Lucille, I am not the one who mentioned the names at first, but I believe the other surname was Cunningham. I just got excited when I saw you were talking about Cooley's.As far as Stewart County relatives,I may also have some Daniel and Rushing families, that were in Stewart County. One couple I have been searching for is D.C. Daniel(s) and his wife Jemima (maiden name unknown). They are in Humphreys County by the 1860 Census. Before that,I have no idea.Their son, Alvah Clemons Daniel, b. Feb.18,1858 m.(1) Lula Izora ? Rushing,(2)Sarah Elizabeth Brake--Apr 10,1894,and (3) Julia Alice Brake--Dec 25,1895. The Brake family was also in Stewart Co. for a while,I believe.Sarah,b.1859, d.1895,and Julia,b.Feb 2,1866,d.Mar 26,1942 were sisters born to Elisha Brake and his wife Catherine O'Gwin. The children of Elisha and Catherine--- 1)Martha-1846 2)Nancy-1856 3)Harriet-1858 4)Sarah Elizabeth-1859 5)Alice?-1860 6)Julia Alice-1866 Children of D.C. and Jemima Daniel-- 1)David 2)George 3)James 4)Rebecca 5)William 6)Alvah Clemons 7)Elvah J.??? I have wondered if D.C. might stand for David Clemons Daniel. I hope someone on the Stewart Co. list might recognize some of these names. I am also posting to Danville Crossing,Humphreys, etc. Teresa Beech

    2. ace1125
    3. Hey! I have a new text on researching Civil War Genealogy for the auction.... and a 'gently' used Goodspeed on Houston Co.. Got me to thinking... What would be wrong with a 'gently' used text for the auction? I don't see a problem with it..as long as it hasn't been used to whip the dog... or been a coaster for your tea...<bg> So if you have some text you have gleaned info from and dont really want ... bring em on.. Have you been thinking about what else you could donate? Hope so... We wanta have some fine worldly goods there...

    2. ace1125
    3. Ok... Friends... Got a clod is in the churn.. We are not having a raffle or anything similar... We are having an auction.. a SILENT AUCTION on Saturday... when we have our big shin dig.. The donated material will be set up on a table in the meeting room and will be on display from 4o'clock until after supper ..There will a piece of paper at each object and you will write your bid on it... (the room is locked during meal time) ... then we will retire back to the meeting room and buy books, talk... and determine who purchased the items. This sounds easy and fun... So think what you want to bring.. and dont forget it... put it in your suitcase....with the Tee shirt and your research material... Are we gonna have fun....or what? Cher

    1. DC HOMECOMING funding
    2. ace1125
    3. Hey yall, With the Homecoming just around the corner we need to have a heart to heart... I have been very conservative on the overhead.. got the room free... when for a different room they were gonna charge us..trying to get information for you to be ready to hit the street Friday morning has cost me.. not all the counties gave me the information. Needless to say it is also a learning experience and a great deal has gone into making sure y'all have maps and making long distance phone calls and stamps ..posterboard..stuff. Some reimbursement is in order and might not be a bad idea plan for this same problem next year when we go at this again. The total expense will be about $100.00 ... I had to so some very creative thinking to keep it there.. (So just the math--- 50 people would pay $2.00 apiece ... but, $4.00 would get us a fund for next year...) Here is the idea Jan and I have come up with.... (unless you want me to just pass the hat) Heck I might make a profit if I do that!! Proposal: a "Tennessee Treasure" table at this shindig and sell chances for a dollar apiece for the drawing to get one of these dandy things... now here is how we might get the goodies...we all have talents no matter where we hail from now, right??? The descendents of middle Tn. have it in their blood.... never met a one who was not either a craftsman, an artist, a musician, a storyteller, or a danged good cook! This is Jan's contribution: Five prints of "Worth Remembering" (a limited edition print by our one and only..Jan many years ago of items from a one-room schoolhouse in Stewart Co.), a homemade video of gen-u-ine sorghum molasses making, a commitment to oil paint within two months the homeplace or scene of your choice to do with your genealogy so long as you provide me a photo. Or material pertaining to genealogy... books, cds.... what ever? NOW THEN who on here that is coming or just wants to contribute to the treasure trove ... WHO makes birdhouses or aprons, has a cassette of themselves singin, quilts, makes homemade perserves and jellies, etc. etc. This is a neat fun way to contribute to the expenses already incurred and if we come up over having a fund to begin planning for next year.... at the same time some of us are going to go home with some real treasures and reminders of the nifty craftsmanship and talents of our DC cousins! If you wanna donate, please let us know! Cher and Jan

    3. Lucille, Now I am not saying a word about your age,,,,,but my grandmother told me how she and the other kids used to slip around and smoke grapevine and corn silk. She must a been older than you, tho, because she quit back in 1943,when she was 41. Her name was Susa Izora Daniel, and she was born Sept. 26,1902 and died Feb 5, 1988. Now I had my first smoke back in 1971.My mother had lit a cigarette took about 2 puff, threw it on the ground, and went around the side of the house. I snatched it up,ran around back and went thru my grandfather's room, which had a door to the screened porch, and went thru to the bathroom. I tried a puff, and it was awful.(Kool Filter Kings) I talked myself into one more, then started feeling a little sick.I was twelve years old and didn't touch another cigarette until I was fourteen. By then a girlfriend of mine had taught me how to smoke without inhaleing. Never touched another Kool, tho. Never got caught, either. My husband was one of five children, and one day the four oldest ones got caught smoking. Their parents made each one eat a cigarette. Two days later my husbands' appendix ruptured and he had emergency surgury. His mother blames herself to this very day. Thanks for the memories ! Now Miss Emma Hall lived up the holler from us,and she used to dip snuff. She had the habit bad.Her front teeth were brown. But I loved Miss Emma, because she always would pull me up in her lap and rock me whenever me and grandmother went a visiting. She was always in that rockin' chair, with a coffee can nearby ! Old Nat Scholes, another neighbor, smoked a pipe. If he wasn't working,he was smoking. Seems like his tobacco was called Red Cheif. He lived in an old,old log cabin with a dogtrot down the center and a front porch, too. On one side of the dogtrat was the formal parlor. It had a big feather bed in there, too. On the other side was another room the same size, and I guess it was once the kitchen, but the family had built another room that went back to make an L shape and it had another porch off of it. My favorite part of the house was the up- stairs. The only way to get up there was from the dogtrot. There were a couple of steps leading to an old plank door and when you went thru the door the old wooden staircase was steep and made two or three right turns before you got to the top.Once you made it to the top there was a center hall over the dogtrot with a window to the front and one to the back. there were two rooms, one to each side of the hall room. The windows were all set at floor level to fit under the sloping roof. When Mr. Nat passed away, somebody rich,I guess, moved the whole thing up to Tennessee City and added all kinds of modern conviences. Mr. Nat was always content with the 2 stone fireplaces and the cast iron cook stove. I am glad it still stands somewhere, tho. When Mr. Nat passed away,he was about 102 years old,and had been in the nursing home for a few years. I think he died in about 1987 so I guess he was born about 1885. After my grandaddy had a heartattack,Mr.Nat used to come down and mow our yard. It was about 2 acres and he used a pushmower. I guess he was about 77 or 78 back then, (ten years older than grandaddy). They laid Mr. Nat to rest at the Hillcrest Cemetery. His beloved wife,Mrs.Pearl, is still buried on the hill behind the spot where the old cabin stood. I could ramble on all night about those people and that place in time that made my childhood such a wondrous thing. I wouldn't trade a single day of it for all the computers and satelite dishes in the world.
