I can cancel them outside of a 48 hour arrival time, They DO NOT charge your Charge account NOW ... but, it is used to reserve the room....a good faith thing... If we get on our stick..or in my case Broom! we might get as the 10-15 they say we needed... to get the FREE large meeting room .... (she has softened it to 10-15 instead of the 15 she said yesterday) The longer we wait the harder it will be... so please work with me on this.. FYI It cost me about $67.00 a nite at the Lodge... Make your reservations...NOW>.... It can do no harm.... 1.800.250.8614 Paris Landing Lodge Cher

    3. Circle this on your calendar!! June 22, 23, and 24... 2000 That is Thursday, Friday, Saturday. (Supper on Saturday) Folks can do the courthouse and Library thing to their hearts content and (I haven't cked ) probably visit the Benton County Gen Societies meeting on Thursday nite too..... The only glitch is getting a sleeping room at the Lodge for Wed nite... we can get the meeting room set up and be ready for Thursday morning.. but, some of us may have to stay at a different motel for Wed nite... )c: **Listen up...** we need 15 reservations at the Lodge to get the meeting room ..... FREE... the meeting room for 100 people COSTS $ 150.00 per day.... otherwise....!!!!!!! That is $450 BUCKs of the earmarked money for the shindig.... tooo much money for just a room! We will meet in the parking lot instead, ok??<bg> We can do this... The room we had this year was not adequate...with the books, computers, and people....and gen charts everywhere!!! It literally was standing room only on Saturday! <LOL> We have a larger committee and will be able to have more good help.... That is the scoop.... I for one am going to attempt to make reservations for the 21,22,23,24th (Wed, throught Sat nite)anyway... Hey, I could get lucky.. You could too.. BTY REMEMBER TO SAY YOU ARE WITH DANVILLE CROSSINGS GROUP.... Cher

    3. Nina Findley of Houston County was at the Homecoming and very funny and bright!!!! With gobs of great research material... She brightened that corner of the room, FOR SURE... Benton Gen Society treated us like royalty at their meeting and at our meeting room... They had a huge HUGE beautiful cake welcoming Danville Crossing and coffee reception at their meeting. They brought the cake over to the meeting room at the lodge to share on Saturday..... Benton Counties, Brenda Griffith, Dona Taylor and Gabbie manned the station so we could use the resources and see what books they had to purchase.. Allison of the Rootsweb Benton list , were all wonderful! Dickson County had reservations, but didnt show. I havent had time to find out what happened.. But, The Chamber sent really nice packets and were very helpful. Henry Counties, President Mary June Sinnema, Joy Bland, Mary Ann, and Peggie at the Chamber of Commerce were all a big help and a super ladies! Houston Counties information was gathered for us by our own Lori H Blair and Ira Bell... Humphreys Counties, Alisa Ottaviano list owner of TnHumphr-l@rootsweb.com gathered all the information for us from far far away.. Stewart Counties material was provided by Jim Long co list manager of TnStewar-L@rootsweb.com gathered and sent the material to me. Kimberly Schmidt, Raymond Lindsey (Gabby), Chuck Allen, Pam Ford & Donna Stinson from the library, Dan Martin. ***********ATTENTION***********ATTENTION************** ***************************************************************** Have you joined the local Genealogical Societies? We MUST support them.. it is a TWO WAY STREET! They are a wealth of good information doing a good work... they need our support AND WE NEED THEIRS...on and off the net... ***************************************************************** Please if I have overlooked somebody... one of you guys point it out to me.. as every one was so helpful and informative.. I hate to overlook anyone! Thank you all so much..1999 would not be nearly as good with out you... we are working on 2000!~~Bring your books and jump right in--- now that we know what to expect it will be easier... 1. I'm HOME!!!
    2. ace1125
    3. What can I say? It was wonderful! Everyone had a ball... gathered information.. shared information .. I am bushed!! I know Lori is too. She worked as hard as she could to help people and to help me... without her the Homecoming would have missed a great deal! Sistler OWES that girl!!! She went above and beyond!! Norma Watson received an Special Certificate of Recognition and it will be mailed to her family this week. The new committee is comprised of Jan Philpot, Vanessa Slea, Jean Gilley, and Cher Adams (c: The Winner of the Solid as a Rock award was a tie... Ira Bell and Jan Philpot The Pale Rock Hider award went to Raymond Lindsey (Gabbie) There were certificates of recognition to the people nominated in both catagories. During each meeting we had drawings and 'free' goodie bags given away... Stone rubbing kits, picture taking kits, books.... all sorts of stuff...homemade jam and tomato relish.. We had awards for 'Most Mature", Youngest, Come the Farthest, and Lived the Closest! These awards were unique and not likely to be used by any other organization.. Using the theme of the ROCK..I got rocks the size of a fist or larger ... washed, varnished, and painted faces on them..... folks got a bang out of them... We had a BINGO game and the winner receives a 15X18 painting (done by Jan or me) of their choice of their homeplace, or an ancestor. The winners were Ira Bell, Jean Gilly, Karen Alexander. When they provide the snapshot to us we will get on it. We had a table set up with a few antique goodies displayed. I think that was the only disappointment for me. We were so packed with books, and people and genealogy that it didnt get the deserved attention. I think next year will be better as we will have more room. We had books from Don Simons, Byron Sistler, Martha Stone, Nelda Saunders, Wm Nesbitt. The Gen Societies represented ahd lots of regional books! We/I sold...er..bought..<bg> a lot of books!!! I think that was a big hit! So when somebody asks for alookup... I KNOW there are a bunch of NEW book owners out there!! So the lookups better come...<LOL> Martha Donated her Sample books to Stewart and Benton Libraries. Nelda donated a map to the Civil War era map and Don Donated a book to the auction. Their contributions were deeply appreciated. The Genealogical/ Historical Societies were super... Benton, Stewart and Henry really rolled out the red carpet.. Dickson was supposed to be there, but didnt come. Humphreys couldnt make it ... and If Houston was here I dont remember! (Honest injun!) The Silent auction was WONDERFUL.. a great variety of books, FTM software, genealogy forms, beautiful artwork , fabulous cushion and throw, genealogy grapevine wreath ( sure nuff ), slag from a furnace.. antique mantle scarf, a microfilm reader, whew... gobs of stuff !! The contributions were wonderful.. and the generous hearts of the people donating the merchandise and the people bidding and buying them was touching... They got Cher back in the black and added to the coffers for next year... The list is too long to itemize... really. The meeting room was PACKED and the decibel level was off the chart... BUT, next year and there will be a next year.... We will have a larger room.. as we have funds to work with... I couldnt nto keep documentation of who brought what, what it sold for and who got it... maybe next year someone can be responsible for that information. With the cursh of bodies in that area it was too hard to keep track of... At the main meeting we Passed the Hat and received about $550. to apply to the expenses of the next DC REUNION. So the committee will have a good nest egg to work with.. Dan Martin and Ira Bell will open a savings account on behalf of the DCHomecoming group to keep it safe till it is needed. The Patio Supper was thwarted...We ate indoors with a super view of water... I really dont know if it was Tn River or if it was KY Lake.... it was one of those summer stormy days... but, the cheer was not dampened at all... you never saw so many smiling happy faces... My tail was 'a waggin'....... Hummm..the food??? We (Paris Landing and me ) will have a talk 'fore the next time to adjust the recipes..... Speaking of recipes... <LOL> I went into the kitchen Thursday and supervised the cooks in making the Chocolate Gravy/Sauce.... They made about 3 gallons... I couldn't believe the size of the kettle!! But, it didn't /couldn't cook down to get the flavor and texture it should have had.. REALLY!! It needs a big Iron skillet, but, any skillet will do... But, the folks got a taste of it and had a good time trying it on grits... and EGGS!! I couldn't believe y eyes!! Friday evening Catherine Cline (Cacky) gave a presentation on tips that she has learned.. and she was witty and informative... typically Cacky!! Lucinda and her sister helped set up displays. Jean Gilley was right there to help set up the Auction and other odds and ends.. super women!! Oh, at the main meeting Jan and Vanessa presented to Dave Snow, Dan Martin and ME.. (can you believe it?) a Movers and Shakers award.. Vanessa did a great job.. she was articulate and generous with her compliment.. she is a joy to know and in the 'rock' theme she gave each of us a broken quartz with crystal and emerald and (sorry Vanessa.. I cant remember the pink ones) stones that were beautiful.. the symbolism was touching.. She has my vote any day! And I was deeply touched to be included in that group. We were sorry Dave S couldnt be there but with him changing jobs at that time just wouldnt allow him to make it. I have a few things to mail to Dave and will get them off in a few days.. We did present to Dan the award Dave asked me to present.. a "Pot Stirrer" award.. and Dan had a good laugh... At the end of the meeting Jan and Vanessa had some fun AT MY ESPENSE.. Jan wanted to roast me.. but, instead just sauteed me instead!! She is the funniest woman I have ever known.. and her 'presentation' was hysterial... Folks, I think it is safe to say that the Homecoming was a success... it was wonderful... I was hoping for 50...remember? We ended up with 119 guests for dinner!!! We have learned a lot and next year will be more refined.. and probably larger... but, as for fun...?? I dont think it can get better than this. I met just about everyone and if I didn't meet you,I am sorry... cause it was a bunch of super folks... and I would hate to miss one of you!! I want to get sappy..here.. I have been invloved with famiy reunions.. and business meetings of large numbers..but, I have never been with a more warm, congenial group EVER... Those of you that didnt get there.. did miss out... If I have forgotten to give appropriate credit to someone.. you folks, please correct me ... as I am working from MY memory... dont have Jan to ck wityh..(c: She is on her way to Savanna... Our projected 2000 Homecoming/Reunion is June 22,23,24 ... THIS IS UNCONFIRMED..next week I will solidify it. So if you yearned to be with us you have a year to try and make it happen.. I have gobs of pix to share but will take me a while to get it organized! Dave will post it on DC or I will on Dickson. BUT, for a couple of days..this 'tarred' woman..is gonna lurk.. See ya soon. Cher

    1. The History of Pennywinkle Farm
    2. Teresa Beech
    3. HISTORY OF PENNYWINKLE FARM (Located in Humphreys County, on Pennywinkle Branch Road. This was probably part of Stewart Co. at one time.) My great-grandfather, Alvah Daniel, owned a farm out in the Turkey Creek area. It was about 2 miles past Mr. Nat Scholes old log cabin. The old home place was down in a valley at the bottom of a "Hollow" or "Holler" as we called it.Around the next bend in the road was the farm of Harris and Francis Mosley. They had seven children, most of whom were several years older than me. There is Linda, who married a Mays,Bob, PeeWee(I believe his name is Eugene),Belinda--a daughter who died before her 2nd birthday, Gina, who was born in 1957 and Cindy, who was born about 1960, and one more. There is a listing for Harry G. Mosley on Pennywinkle Branch Road, so perhaps this is the name that escapes me. My great-grandfather Alvah (Alvie) Clemmons Daniel was survived by his 3rd wife Julia Alice Brake Daniel. When she passed away, my grandparents R.G. and Susa Izora Daniel Carter, owned the farm.My grandmother remembered growing up in, 1st, a one room log cabin with a loft, and later, a 2 room log cabin with 2 loft rooms. One loft room was shared by 6 daughters-- Carrie,Katherine,Cora,Susa,Ruth, and Hila. Another daughter-Mary Lula- had once shared the room, but she died of pneumonia before her 10th birthday. The other room had first belonged to Ed and Lirt,my grandmothers older brothers, and then it was the bedroom of Wyly, the youngest son. The old cabin was used as a smoke house, after the new cabin was built. Sometime, probably in the 1940's my grandfather built another house. It was a 1 1/2 story farm house. The earliest pictures I have seen of the house (abt 1947),show that it was built pretty much the way I remember it. It had asphalt siding in a red brick style. There was a concrete front porch about 8 foot deep that ran across the entire front of the house. In the front facade there were 3 windows in the 6 over 6 style and 2 doors placed so that it went window-door-window-door-window across the front. Believe it or not there is a name for this architectural venacular, but it escapes me at the moment. It was a style which evolved as a replacement for the dog trot style log cabin, so it was the style of the common man. Starting from the right-hand side, the first window and door were the guest room, which opened only to the front porch and had no inner door to the house. It contained the only "fancy' bed room suite we had. This consisted of delicate looking pieces of carved furniture, including a three mirrored vanity with a rectangular stool upolstered in blue velvet. There was also a small chifferobe with mirrored doors framed in more delicate carving, and a four poster bed. Lastly, there was a wash stand with pitcher and bowl. The next window and door were to the front parlor. This was another room which was mostly for company. We had the tree there at Christmas, and in 1960 or earlier, a black and white TV was added to the luxuries in the parlor, which led to grandmother doing her ironing in the front room while the "soap operas" were showing. The last front window was to the "stair hall." The stair hall was a fun room. It had a day bed and a folding cot, for the use of children when there was EXTRA company. The stairs were wide but very plain, unfinished wood with no rail , so I usually crawled up the stairs to the attic bedroom. The attic room was once the bedroom of my mother Rita Dean and her twin sister Norma Jean. It was huge, probably 30 to forty feet by 15 or 20 feet. There were double windows at each end and lots of storage cupboards and shelves. Downstairs, the next row of rooms were my grandfather's bedroom, the back parlor, and what had once been intended to be a dining room, but had become another bedroom. So, we had to go thru this room to reach the kitchen. The kitchen was extended out from the house,so that it would not heat the whole house. The kitchen must have been about 20' x 20', because it included a huge chest type freezer, a tall metal storage cabinet, refrigerator, electric stove, big double sink with drain boards on both sides,a meal and flour bin,a door to a back stoop, more shelves,a door to the "spring room" , and a wood cook stove. It was used mostly for heat by the time I was a child, but electricity came to the farm about 1959,the year I was born. Of course, there were a table and chairs and a row of windows at the dining end of the kitchen. My favorite room in the house was "The spring room." Most farmhouses had wells or spring houses separate from the house, but the spring room at Pennywinkle was in the house. The spring ran out of a bluff behind the house. Pipes were run from the spring to the house. The water ran constantly from a pipe in the wall down a couple of concrete steps or ledges, into a pool about 6' X 6', and down a drain in the center of the pool. Thus, the water ran day and night. There were floor to ceiling shelves on all walls and they were filled with canned goods and many times the churn or jugs of milk sat in the pool,to be kept cool. This was the "cooler" before Pennywinkle had electricity. There was a door at the opposite end of the spring room that opened onto the screened porch. This was the wash room. There was a huge double wash tub complete with a scrub board and lye soap. Also, by the time I was a child, there was an electric washer with a hand-operated clothes wringer on top. The dryer was a clothes line outside the door in the back yard. And,we had an indoor bathroom! It was added by closing in the far end of the screened porch, so the only door to the bathroom was from the porch. We had a huge enameled cast iron tub with claw feet, and of course, the standard sink and toilet. One of the things that still stands out in my mind---all rooms had linoleum floors and wallpaper on the walls. Teresa Beech P.S. More on the history of Pennywinkle later.

    3. Can someone tell me if the Humphreys County Library in Waverly will be open on Saturday. On the H.C. Genweb page it states that the library is closed on Saturdays during time that school is out. If this is so, we will maybe need to plan on going there on Friday. Thanks, Helen
