Hello, I am looking for information about James Helton Brumly (b. 2,SEPT,1863) and his wife Sarah Elizabeth C. Wills (b. 1,NOV,1868). They were married abt. 1884. Their daughter, Annie, was allegedly born near Bold Spring, TN, and the homestead was near a large balancing-rock landmark. I have both James and Sarah in Humphreys County in 1880, although James' name is spelled Broomly. James is age 17,single, and working as a farm laborer with a family named Raines. They appear again in Dyer County, in the 1900 census. They move to Pemiscot County, Missouri sometime after that and are buried there. Thanks for any help. Melinda
I am trying to prove or disprove a link from my great-grandfather, Richard HUNT, to the Spencer HUNT (b. around 1780s) recorded in the Franklin Co, TN 1850 census. Felicia's files(from the HUNT-L list) state that this Spencer is Spencer Trent HUNT, born in Halifax Co, VA in 1788 to James HUNT and Rhoda NUNNELEE. I have found an abstract of Rhoda's application for a Rev. war pension that confirms the info on Spencer T. James and Rhoda moved their family to Henry Co, VA sometime in the 1790s. Spencer T. HUNT can be found in Hickman Co, TN in 1820; Dickson Co, TN and Humphreys Co, TN in the 30s and 40s. There is an interesting letter from a William TURNER to his son Fennel TURNER that mentions Spencer T. Hunt. William TURNER's grandmother was Spencer's sister. She is referred to as Fanny in the letter and she was married to Allen PARRISH. There is a Frankey listed with Spencer and his siblings in Rhoda's rev war pension app. I found the marriage of Frances Hunt and Allen PARRISH in Henry Co, VA marriages. These two things put a positive id to the Spencer T. in TN as the son of James and Rhoda. Here is the mystery: There is a lot of information on Spencer in TN. There is an account of a murder that some people thought Spencer had something to do with. He was supposed to be very distraught about the suspicion. He is said to have died. There is a will proved (but disputed by his wife Mary). His wife got married again. So... Spencer T. HUNT disappears from Dickson, Co TN area between 1840 and 1850. Maybe dead, maybe not. His will left money to the schools of Dickson and Humphreys counties and a monument (shaft) was put up in his honor but they didn't know where his grave was so they put it into a cemetery in town. Then it went out by the highway. So... a Spencer HUNT around the same age shows up in the 1850 Franklin Co, TN census. I cannot find another Spencer Hunt of his age anywhere in the surrounding states. Also in that same census is another younger Spencer HUNT b. in 1810. Where did this older Spencer come from? Is it really Spencer Trent? It could very well be that he left the area because of the suspicion. He may have had another family in the Franklin Co. area in his past that he went back to. Is anybody related to these families listed in the Franklin censuses? Does anyone on these county lists have information that would provide clues for me? 1850 Spencer Hunt 70 Sarah Hunt 55 David Hunt 18 William Hunt 16 Mary Hunt 14 Richard Hunt 12 Elizabeth Hunt 10 Spencer Hunt 40 Jamima 25 James 4 Charlotte 2 Robert C. 6mo Mariam Whilhite 19 1860 David Hunt 27 Lucinda 28 (maybe a CROWDER) Mary L. 9 Antony 7 (Anthony) Catherine 5 E.V. 1 (listed as Virginia in 1870) ? Would anyone happen to know if there is or ever was a Cedar Grove in Humphreys Co., TN? It would probably be located somewhere around Hurricane Mills or Bakersville, TN. Lillie Cotham
Looking for information on James P. (possibly Peter) Wilson, b. 5-13-1825, d. 11-10-1888, m. Elizabeth Ann Adams, 11-21-1861, Dickson Co. They lived just off White Oak across in Dickson Co. Thought maybe someone in Humphreys Co. migt be doing research for some Wilson`s. Thanks, Faye Wilson Keele.
I wonder if anyone would have access to the 1910 and 1920 Census of Humphreys Co. I am trying to find out where my mother's family was at that time. I believe they were in Humphreys Co. If anyone has access to these records and would be willing to look for me, please let me know. Lillie Cotham
Hi Faye, I looked and found no listing for a Joe N., Rosa, Peter or Laura Wilson in my cemetery books. Sorry, Betty
Can anyone do a look-up for me in a Cem. Book for Joe N. Wilson m. Rosa David (Davis), 8-9-1896 and a Peter F. Wilson m. Laura Coleman, 1-14-1900. They are supposedly buried on Hurrican Creek in Humphreys Co. outside of McEwen. Any info will be greatly appreciated. THANKS. Faye
Jasper M. Springer was born in June 1874, prob. in Dickson Co, Tenn. the son of Josiah T. Springer and Martha F. Rushing. Jasper Springer married abt. 1898 a Margaret ______. (What was her surname?) I did not find the marriage in the Dickson Co. records. Jasper Springer is in the 1900 Dickson Co. census, but in 1910 and 1920 he is in Humphreys Co. Did he die in Humphreys Co.? He is living in a boarding house in the 1920 census. Where is wife Margaret and their children: Oscar, Bessie, Sam, Oly, Charles and Mattie Springer?? Thank you, Kathleen Rizer
I have a copy of the three volumes of the Humphreys County cemetery books. I bought them from the Historical Society back in 1978. Part one and Part two are compiled by Gladys P. Anderson and Jill K. Garrett. The last one is burial records 1969 - 1975 and was compiled by Gladys Anderson, Mary Sue Johnson, Rebecca Jones and Margaret Whitfield. I do not know if these are still available or if reprints have been made since that time. You would need to check with the Historical Society in Waverly. Betty
If there is a book on Humphreys County cemetaries, I would be interested as well. I have been looking for info on my great great grandmother, Mary Hawkins Deaver, who died there during the Civil War in 1863. Thanks Joe D. I have finally come to the realization that if I am going to track down my Rook line I am going to have to look beyond Montgomery county. Most of my Rooks had left (or died) Montgomery Co. by 1840. However, between 1800 and 1840 they lived in and around there---which means that some of them had to have been buried around the area also. I just spent a few days recently in Montgomery Co. and drove around several adjacent counties but I did not have any idea about who might be buried where. If you are on more than one list concerning these counties you will probably see this same msg. so I apologize to you ahead of time. If I get an answer as to where to purchase these books, I will let the list know. Thank you for your help. Jean Hancock in TX ______________________________

Since a few folks are posting their surnames I thought I would do the same: BLACK; VAUGHN; SHEAROD....all were in Humphreys Co around Bakerville in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I have their marriage records but just wondered if there might be any other "cousins" out there with more info to exchange. Thanks, Victoria

HI Everyone..! >From the cemetery books, part two, page 106 Turner, Andrew jackson, 22 Oct 1843 - 28 Oct 1923, son of Wyley and Maranda Thompson Turner, Turner Cemetery, Big Richland Creek. (Note: Her name was correctly Mariah.) >From Book 1, page 30 The 1880 manuscript (see my note on this at the bottom) has the following about settlement in the area...referring to Big Richland Creek... "On Big Richland Creek, 17 miles, Levi Kirkland, wily Turner, james Black, David H. Burton, Peter Black, the wilkes, and others, 1807-1808...On Little richland Creek, 11 miles, William Prince, William Murray, Johnathan Folkner and others -- 1806.". Antoher history records the following: "Sometime in 1810 the Baptists erected a church on Big Richland Creek and the Reverend George Turner was the 1st minister in charge. He was followed by the Rev Levi Kirkland. These two men, members of the Primitive Baptist Church, were the organizers also of the first congregation in Benton Cty in 1823 on Cypress Creek..." About the 1880 manuscript: The is from an unpublished manuscript from the Tennessee Historical Society files in the State Library and Archives. It was dated 1880 and is the earliest record of Humphreys County, even predating the Goodspeed sketch. Hope this helps! Alisa
Thank you for your reply, it is INGRAM, it has been spelled INGRUM but the Garland first name is my clue. I wonder where they buried him , why was he in Humphrey's county? Everyone else for the most part was in Roane? Isn't genealogy fun? For now I don't know who else might be buried in Humphrey's County, as some are in Henderson, most in Roane, some in Loudon. Garland was my Grgrandfather x 3. HI! The only reference I can find in the cemetery books is from the mortality schedules: Page 95, Book 2 Ingrum (?), Garland, age 100 years, married, born in VA., died in July of cancer. (Surname appears to be Ingcomm.) That is the listing as it appears in the book. I don't know if Ingcomm is a typo or not. Alisa PS: There are other Ingrams listed if you have any other given names I will do a further look up for you.
