Female M.D.s back then were a rare as hen's teeth. She may have been the first one to practice in the state. My Grandmother had a huge framed picture of her which I still have. She was single. I remember Grandmother talking about her. There was a little Market out on Turkey Creek when I was a child that was called Artis's Grocery.Dr.Davis had her home/office on that spot. This was close to Alvie Daniel's farm, and his daughter Susa (my Grandmother) served as her nurse. I believe Dr.Davis attended med. school in Washington,D.C. Susa had no training other than the training she recieved from Dr. Davis. As her nurse,Grandmother lived with her so that she could accompany her everywhere she went. That was when Doctors made house calls ! For seven years she went to tend the sick, sometimes moving in with people who needed round-the-clock care. She helped Dr. Davis deliver babies, and when Dr.Davis became an invalid,Susa Daniel Carter moved her into her house and nursed Doctor Davis umtil she died. By the way,Dr. Davis delivered my Grandmother's children including a set of twins Norma Jean and Rita Dean (my mother) at home on Dec.13,1935. It was a "surprise". Back in those days it was very difficult to diagnose twins. Dr.Davis had her suspicions but did not mention it until she delivered Norma and then she said,"Here comes another one !" Are there any local records about Dr.Davis and her practice of at least 13 years that I am aware of ? She was there by 1922 or earlier. Is there anyone on the list who remembers her ? Teresa Beech

    3. Hello Leta Jo and Humphreys County Researchers... I found some interesting information that might tie into your search...at the very least I hope this will inspire some help from you other Hooper researchers. Part two of the Cemetery books: pg 1 Buried in Averitt Cemetery -- sometimes called Petty Cemetery. O'Guin, Kisiah, wife of R. N. born 15 April 1852, died 2 June 1917(Family records: Kisiah Petty, married Robert N. O'Guin.) Note: From the Heritage Books, Vol. 1, page 324, I found that this Kisiah Petty was the daughter of Jim Redden Petty and Barbara Damesworth Petty. She married R. N. (Polk) O'Guinn and had 15 children. Page 208 Hooper, Harris W. 19 Sept 1853 - 12 April 1951, widower of Mattie Outlaw Hooper, son of Chancey Nimrod and Harriett White Hooper, Fowlkes Cemetery. Page 295 Hooper, S. K. killed 26 Dec 1861, Co. K. 50th Tenn Inf. CSA (L) , Katherine, those interested in this line refer to court minutes 1842-1850. , Absalom, died before Nov 1838 when his minor heirs were listed in the court minutes, these were John L. (Later John C.) Absalom A. and Eli L. Hooper (CM). , John L., died before Feb 1842 when letters of administration given to Ichabod Adams and Nimrod C. Hooper. Later his minor heirs were listed as Nimrod and Ichabod Hooper. (This last entry in question.) (CM) No Morrell listed. Book 1: Page 9, Fowlkes Cemetery Hooper, Harriett E. born 8 Oct 1819, died 14 Sept 1903. (She was the dau of Whidbea White, wife of Nimrod Chauncey Hooper.) >From the Humphreys County Heritage Books: Part Two, page 298 and 297 There are references to two Kiziah Petty's. 1. Kiziah, born 15 March 1828, married 16 June 1852, John Peavyhouse. This Kiziah Petty is said to be the 3rd born of George Valentine Petty and Mary (Polly) Redden Petty. George and Polly Petty moved to Navarro County TX in 1846 and only James Redden Petty remained in TN. Thomas and Jane Petty had 9 children, the 4th being George Valentine (Feb 14- 1803-Feb 15, 1886) married Mary Redden. The 9th was Kiziah A., born 1815 died 1879, Carroll Cty, TN married Feb 20, 1840 to Jacob H. Whitehorn. I could find no reference to Dr. Alcie Morrell in the books I have. Anyone else? I am not a Hooper researcher so I am not sure how this all ties in to Leta Jo's information....if you know something, please share! Thanks! 3. Dear John and List Members, To order the Humphreys County Cemetery Books: Send $35 per book -- there are two to the set -- to Humphreys County Historical Society Mrs. Margaret Whitfield 107 Carroll Avenue Waverly. TN 37185 The $35 per book includes shipping -- actually I think the Historical Society has reduced the cost by the amount of the postage. I 'd like to repeat...I receive no money, credit or anything for this...I just believe these books to be of great value to those of us with Humphreys County ties. 1. BRAKE FAMILY
    2. j
    3. Ummm...Hi Teresa, not sure how we have missed each other but apparently we have, Yes, I am related to your Brakes. Julia Alice Brake was the daughter of Elisha B. Brake and Catherine O'Gwin. She was born Feb. 2, 1866. Her father was the son of Isaah Brake, who was the son of Jacob Brake of Edgecomb Co. NC. He was the son of James Brake and Phoebe Mooreland. James Brake was the son of Jacob Brake born about 1720 and died in 1796. Jacob is buried in Brake Cemetery; Rocky Mount, NC. Jacob came to this country as an indentured servant. This line is well documented, and there is a Brake Family Society. What else can I help you with? I would also like to know how you tie into this line if you do not mind sharing with me. jan -----Original Message----- From: Teresa Beech <beechfamtree@email.msn.com> To: TNHUMPHR-L@rootsweb.com <TNHUMPHR-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, April 13, 1999 3:53 PM Subject: Re: My Humphreys County Surnames >Good morning, > It is good to communicate with someone who is related to the >Brake's.Of course,I am >interested in all of the surnames I posted, but the especially the >Brake, because it is a very >rare surname. 3. Here is SOME information... You Benton Countians!!! Friday nite is the Geneological Societies regular meeting...at 6:30 P.M. A perfect evening for you! It is at the Library meeting room in the Basement on Walnut Street. Brenda Griffith is our contact and is doing a bang up job gathering information for us. God Bless Brenda! Here is the plan. Because we are such a diverse group, we are having a loosly knit structure for this first gathering. Technically there are 5 counties. (But, you all have adopted Dickson and me...so it is 6 <bg>) You all have different goals and interests in these counties. Because of this, we are providing to you packets that will be available Thursday and Friday at a check in table for Danville Crossing at the lodge. These packets will have 'tourist' information, locations, times, contacts, a map, planned scheduel of our meetings, Cemetery locations, Funeral home locations to each county....and anything else we think may be beneficial. FRIDAY: We will meet at a hospitality room at the Lodge (it will be available for us at noon Thursday thru the morning of Sunday... we can meet there and spread out materials...) After the meeting, we will gather for Breakfast at the Paris Landing Lodge ..making personal plans.. ie: do you want to group up and go to the courthouses and catch them open on Friday and in the afternoon hit cemeteries or Libraries... it is a personal call. Friday night will be the meeting of Benton Counties Gen Soc.. 6:30 . Many of us will want to attend that. You will make your own meal arrangements.. as we will be scattered most of the day. Saturday: Morning You will be able to hit the Libraries, Cemeteries, Funeral homes and stalk around. The day is yours. to use... Saturday evening regroup as a whole at the park and have a BBQ or cookout and bon fire ... visit and share information.. Sunday meet for breakfast ... and decide if we want to do this again.. and when and how structured we want it to be. Another thing... I know some of you want the goodies... the shirts, or hats and more structure of activities. The costs of shirts and hats can be expensive since our group is not large enough to bring prices down( this year) .A lot of thought went into this... and the diversity of interest --will break the groups down to small numbers, several folks staggering in at different times and some only staying Saturday...... all affect our ability to create structure. Since we are all somewhat experienced with gen research... (and speakng for myself) I joyfully spend days and days in the courthouse at Charolotte eating peanuts and drinking a flat coke and not talking to anybody or seeing the light of day.. <vbg> We need to spend our time looking, reading, copying and photographing, and stone rubbing during the days..... we can visit in the evenings.... when we cant do these other things. Below is a list of the folks that are making a valiant effort to come. Please let me know if you want to come and are not on the list. It would help if you mentioned your county of interest, too. 3. Good morning, It is good to communicate with someone who is related to the Brake's.Of course,I am interested in all of the surnames I posted, but the especially the Brake, because it is a very rare surname. I have only now after 6 months of searching found some clues as to who were the parents of Julia Alice Brake who married Alvah Clemons Daniel. And he has proved to be a little difficult also. I had the good fortune to copy the family info out of Julia's Bible many years ago. It has since disappeared. It may have ended up in an antique's store somewhere in West Tennessee. No one really knows what happened to this Bible. It was rather small--maybe 6"x 9" and about 3-4" thick. It was hard bound and the cover was brown with raised lettering. It contained information relating to the birth of 7 children. The only information it contained about Julia and Alvah is as follows: Alvah Clemons Daniel---B. February 18,1858 and D.January 21,1928 Julia Alice Brake----------B. February 02,1866 and no death date was listed, because, I suppose,no one felt they should write in her Bible. The following is the sum total of info I have found on the Brake family: http://www.eg.bucknell.edu/~hyde/brake/ This ia a website devoted to the Brake family. Last time I checked, there was no info available on the Humphreys Co. Brake's. But it does have some great info on the heritage and history of the family. It has many interesting photos also. 1850 Humphreys County Census 450 Brake, Amos 43 m 1 Picty 37 f John 25 m 1 Sarah 20 f Thomas 11 m Henry 9 m Elizabeth 5 f 1860 Humphreys County Census Index Rushing #1)A.J.--Caledonia--Edney--Josephine--Margaret--Mary Brake #4)John--Lewis--Londa--Mason--Rileigh--Sarah--William Rushing #8)Jenevia--Julia A.--Nancy J.--Richard C.--William Daniel #16)Samuel #20)Joseph--Mary--William #22)D.C.--David--George--James--Jemima--Rebecca--William--(Alvah/Elvah?) #70)David--Elizabeth--George--Hiram--Jane--John--Mary--Minnie--Selena #71)Charles--Jane--Philander Brake #71)Catherine--Elisha--Martha--Nancy--Sarah Rushing#72)Daniel--Elizabeth--Semantha--William #74)Ann #98)David P.--Eliza--Elizabeth J.--George--James--Jones--Nancy H.--William R. Of the 2 Brake households listed in 1860 there are only 2 names that were carried over from the 1850 Census.John and Sarah. Is it possible that they were married and living with his family in 1850 and subsequently had Julia after the 1860 Census was long past ?( Household # 4) D.C. and Jemima Daniel are my best bet as the parents of Alvah Daniel. He should have been listed in the 1860 census if I had his birth date correct. I added the parenthectical Alvah/Elvah at the end because I did a search on the LDS family search site and the info I returned offered a female Elvah J. born in 1867 to D.C. and Jimima Daniel in Humphreys Co,Tenn. It is a little maddening sometimes !! Did Alvah have a sister named Elvah ? Is it a misprint ? When was he born if not on the date listed in the family Bible ? Could it be that these are not his parents and he is listed on the 1860 Census in some other county,or state ? Notice the 2 listings for household #71.Was this an error or were there Daniel and Brake families under one roof ? Moving on to brighter subjects,I have a great deal of info on the Cooley family of Humphreys County. The Patriarch was James Cooley who was my gggg-grandfather. I am commucating with several Cooley descendants at this time and have corresponded with Betty Harwood in the past who is also a Cooley descendant. I have not been able to get any e-mail thru to her lately, tho. My Fortner line is easy---my mother's 1st cousin Betsy Carter, daughter of Cora Daniel and Will? Carter, married Vester Fortner and they had 3 daughters. Margie, the oldest, Judy, and Laura who is my age. I have not seen any of them in recent years except for Betsy. David if you would like,I can send you some files to your private e-mail. I would love to post some old family photos on the Humphreys County Page. Teresa Sue Beech
