Surnames: HOUSTON Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lhB.2ACI/552 Message Board Post: I thought I would post this to Houston list for informational purposes. The book has no publication date. Author Harriet Houston Brown died in 1983, and book was compiled between 1958 and 1972. Their are many pictures and the book has about 125 pages. There are discrepancies in dates in the book, but I thought the info below would be of interest to Houston descendants. Harriet Adeline Houston was the daughter of Jesse Patrick Houston, son of William Houston born 1820. There was a William Houston Family Bible and "passing down" of this Bible was given in the book. Diana Morse HOUSTON FAMILY HISTORY - compiled by Harret Houston Brown Houston Family History The name HOUSTON originated about the year 1153 when Hugh Padulian was given the rank of Barony of Kilpeterier in Lauarkshire Land in Scotland and founded Hugh's Tower, to Haghten, later shortened to Houston. John Houston, a descendant of the Baronet whose ancestors were in the company of Scottish Arehers who led the way for Joan of Arc from New Orleans to Reims, landed at the South River Capes at Philadelphia, Pa. with his wife and six children and his mother in 1730. He lived in Pennsylvania for twenty-four years before moving to Virginia. Gentleman John as he was called because of his Scottish rank, was portly in appearance and wealthy. He was the father of four sons, John, Robert, Samuel and Christopher. From Samuel descended the Sam Houston's of Texas fame and from Christopher the Houston's who during the Civil War moved to Missouri and were among the pioneer settlers of Camden County. Christopher Houston was born in Virginia in 1761. Later he moved to North Carolina where he married Sarah Mitchell. They were the parents of a son named James Houston, born in Texas in 1793. James had a son named Jonathan. Sam Houston was born in Virginia but moved to Tennessee. He ran away from home when he was fifteen years old and lived with a tribe of Indians, the Cherakees, and was adopted into their tribe. Later, he returned to civilization becoming the Governor of Tennessee. He later moved to Texas where he became Governor for a time. When he obtained international fame, he was a General in the armed forces. (This information was taken from an article in an Eldon, Missouri newspaper written by Ethel Houston in 1969.) William, brother of Samuel Houston of Texas, was born in the year 1796. He married Polly Savage and to this union five children were born, six boys and one girl. Son William Houston, born January 23, 1820, married Elizabeth Honeycut. To this union were born seven boys and give girls. He was the father of Jesse Houston.
