This article was probably printed in the newspaper at some time, but I do not have a reference for it. There is no author listed and I think this is just something the newspaper itself wrote up for information purposes. In Christ, Melissa Barker Genealogy Researcher/Family Historian RAOGK Volunteer GET THE FACTS...... THE DOVER WEEKLY was a weekly newspaper that flourished in Stewart County during 1860. The second newspaper was established in 1870 as THE DOVER RECORD. The first issue was dated February 2, 1870. The paper, devoted to the Democratic programs, was a five-column folio, and by July 1 was enlarged to a six-column folio, and by September 30, to a seven-column folio. It was suspended in July 1877. In 1877, the owner of the PARIS GAZETTE purchased THE RECORD and changed it's name to DOVER COURIER. After that date, historical records are unavailable. An issue dated February 10, 1922, carried the masthead of THE STEWART COUNTY TIMES. Other issues from 1936, 1939, 1940, 1942 and 1945, all reflect a Friday publication date. The HOUSTON COUNTY TIMES was founded in July 1874 and was suspended that first year after publishing only six issues because of "lack of patronage". In the Spring of 1877, the HOUSTON COUNTY HERALD was established and after six issues changed to THE INDEPENDENT WEEKLY. After a few weeks, the publication was renamed the HOUSTON COUNTY REVIEW, which lasted for three years. The name was then changed to THE ERIN REVIEW and was published until July 1882, with the last issue dated being July 15. At the time, the paper and equipment was purchased and moved to Clarksville. Houston County was without a publication until 1883 when the ERIN ENTERPRISE began. After four issues, news coverage was again suspended until October 1885 when the HOUSTON COUNTY NEWS was published as a seven-column folio and "Democratic in politics". Publication was suspended "soon after the last election" and was revived in July 1887. Weekly publications continued with an occasional skip. As noted in May 1890, "We issued no paper last week. One hand was out of the office with yellow fever and rest of us were waiting on the sick?" In 1948, the two county publication joined to publish THE STEWART-HOUSTON TIMES, Tennessee's only two-county newspaper. Today, the weekly publication is mailed each Tuesday to almost 6,000 subscribers. In addition, each county office publishes a weekly shopper which is mailed to non-subscribers, offering total market coverage of advertisers. Additionally, the two-county newspaper publishes several special sections throughout the year, including the Houston County High School Shamrock newsmagazine, a senior tabloid, an Irish Booklet, a two county high school football section, a Stewart County Graduation Tab and recipe/gift guide collection.
