Surnames: Chappell, Wiseman Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lhB.2ACI/612 Message Board Post: Source: “The Stewart-Houston Times” Newspaper, a weekly newspaper of Stewart County and Houston County in Tennessee Date of Newspaper: Tuesday, November 21, 1950 Page: Front Page "$1,080 Raised At Erin Methodist Greenback Party" The Thanksgiving spirit was prevalent at the Erin Methodist Church last Wednesday evening, when approximately 95 persons gathered in the new dining room for the prayer worship program and the "greenback" party which followed. Prior to the service, a Thanksgiving meal was served cafeteria style to everyone present which represented the youngest and oldest of the church. Advertising it as a "greenback" party did not tend to scare the folks away but seemed to increase interest accoding to Rev. Tom Chappell, pastor. At the close of the sermon, W.H. Wiseman read a report of the financial condition of the new building. Then placing a large glass bowl on the table, he told them of the plans to pay off a part of the indebtedness by this means of collection. He left it to the discretion of the group to decide how much they wanted to give. Needless to say their hearts were as large or larger than their pocket books. When counted, the amount of the offering had reached the peak of $1,080. This offering will be applied against the new church building debt. Prior to the serving of the banquet, a brief musical program was presented by Mrs. Ewing Lyle. The Rev. Wilson Cole, Pastor of the Erin Church of the Nazarene, gave the invocation, then everyone formed a line and marched through the dining room and was served cafeteria style a plate of chicken, dressing, slaw, celery, cranberries, peas, potato salad, coffee, bread and pie. More than 200 people were served. Joe Spencer, commander, who was introduced by Bill L. Skelton, welcomed the visiting guests and recognized all World War I Veterans and Gold Star Mothers. Duncan D.
