Hi all, I am a new member of the list. The family I am researching is that of Smith KELLEY, born 1811 in TN. This family is found in census records of both Hickman and Perry Counties. It is believed, but not proven, that Smith is the brother of Gardner Kelley (b. 1799 NC), Joseph KELLEY (b. 1802), John Pleasant KELLEY (b. 1816 TN), and possibly Lewis KELLEY (b.1806 TN). My feeling is that John may actually be a nephew of the others. Their father may be Joseph Kelley, born 1767 in VA, who appears on the 1850 census of Perry Co with John Kelley. The names Smith, Gardner, and Lewis were used as given names in these families. I am trying to sort out the other Kelleys in Hickman/Perry Counties as well, including the family of Thomas Kelley. Are the Thomas Kelley and Joseph Kelley who appear on the 1800 census of Fairfield Co SC the same Thomas and Joseph in the 1830 census of Hickman Co TN? There are SMITH, CAMPBELL, LEWIS, and BARBER families nearby in Fairfield Co; these are also the surnames of the Kelley neighbors in Hickman Co. Smith KELLEY migrated to Pope Co AR ~1858 where he joined some earlier settlers from Hickman Co: the Needham FLOWERS family and the family of William COOPER and wife Berthinia HALBROOK. Smith Kelley was killed in the 1860s returning home from a grist mill in Pope Co AR. His wife Nancy returned to Perry Co TN with the younger children.
