Lillian Bernice WHITWELL was born 13 June 1912 in Bennett, Ripley Co MO, the third of five daughters (Katherine Adeline, Frankie Bell, Leila Jewell, Georgia Ann) born to Mervin Allen WHTIWELL (20 May 1884 Bennett, Ripley Co MO - 21 January 1921, Chelsea, Rogers Co OK) and Myrtle Estelle "Jo" MOORE (16 March 1885 Paris, Lafayette Co MS - 28 April 1963 St Louis MO). Both parents are descendants of William WHITWELL (30 April 1799 KY - 31 July 1877 Hickman Co TN) and Rebecca Curry ( 24 October 1797 GA - 6 November 1854 Hickman Co TN). Bernice, as she preferred to be called, was only eight when her father died. Shortly thereafter her mother married an uncle and Bernice and two of her sisters were sent to St Louis to live in the Masonic Children's Home. In 1933 Bernice married Lawrence Joseph WINKELER (17 July 1913 St Louis MO - 31 July 1979 St Louis MO) and in 1939 their only child, Larry Allen, was born. Bernice was an active member of the Eastern Star. She was a talented hairdresser, seamstress and cook. Bernice died 1 October 1959 in St Louis MO five months before the birth of her first granddaughter. An event she was eagerly planning for. Bernice and Lawrence are buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St Louis Co MO.
