Members of at least three generations of my family have been searching without success for the origins of Joel PUGH/PEW, who was described in the History of Hickman Co. [Tennessee] by Spence and Spence (1900) as being "from Kentucky." That is our only clue about where he came from. Joel PUGH settled about 1810 in Shady Grove (Duck River, Hickman Co.), TN, in the midst of new settlers, many from Virginia and Kentucky. He was a "millwright and wood-workman." What part of Kentucky did other original Shady Grove settlers come from? If I knew that it might help me know which of the Kentucky PUGH/PEW families he was from. About 1810 he married Prudence "Jane" NICKS, who was born in Guilford Co., NC, in 1794 and moved to Shady Grove about 1805, when she was 11, with her parents, George NICKS and Jean ANDERSON NICKS, and siblings. Because she moved to Tennessee at such a young age, I assume that she first met Joel at some time after her arrival there. Joel and Jane had at least seven children: George Roddy, Sarah Emily, Jane Amanda, John W., Mary Melissa, Margaret Etta, and Samuel. Joel was a private in the War of 1812, fighting with many other Tennesseans in the bloody Fort William engagement. He was reported to have died at age 36 in Hinds Co., Mississippi, in 1830, cause unknown. (Since Hinds County, Mississippi, and Hickman County, Tennessee, are both on the Natchez Trace, I wonder if he was on a trip to Natchez or New Orleans when he died.) A David PEW and a Joel PEW, both heads of households, were listed in Hickman Co, Tennessee, in the 1820 Census. Joel died shortly before the 1830 census. Any clues about Joel PUGH/PEW will be very much appreciated. Macalyne Watkins Fristoe Lafayette, IN Transplanted Tennesean
