Hi Marji, I looked through my email files and I don't see a correspondence between us before, but I could be wrong. I don't have much on the Cochran's in fact I have my own quandary over pronounciation and spelling going on. I believe that Josephine Isabel COCHRAN married Alexander Montgomery BELL on 9/16/1869 in Hickman County. According to IGI indices, she is the daughter of A.D. (Aaron?) COCHRAN and Nancy BOWEN. In reviewing some information, I came across a listing from the Hickman County Tennesse Cemetery Records, Part 1, by Jill Garrett and Iris H. McClain that has a COTHRAN Cemetery located on what was known as the old (blankedout) place in District 6 out in a field. It goes on to say that on 10.31.1965 Mrs. Baxter Murray (my father's Aunt Pearl) said she knew the following people were buried there. Bell, Montgomery Bell, Josephine Cothran, _____ (g-grandfather of Mrs. Murray) Cothran, _____ (g-grandmother of Mrs. Murray) Mrs. Murray pronounced the name as COTHRAN not COTHAM. Now here is my problem, dear old Aunt Pearl isn't around to ask. It is obvious that these are my kin, (would love to know where this cemetery is - does anybody have a clue?), but there are no COTHRAN's listed in the Hickman County Census that I can find. COCHRAN like it is listed in the IGI index (which is not known for its blazing accuracy) however can be found in the Census, in fact, I found an Aaron D. Cochran in the 1840 Hickman County Census. Given the accents and the literacy levels of Tennessee in the 1800s, I am not sure I will ever get to the bottom of this. Sorry Iacn't be of more help to you, but should I come across any information that might help you I will forward it on.
