Hi Jerry, First, Stephenson is not one of my lines, but since I am a little stuck on my lines at the moment, I did a few searches to see what I could find. You may already have what I found, but I'll send along. WorldConnect has one entry that shows Joshua Wyatt Stephenson b. 3/7/1807 in Wade Co., N.C., d. Feb, 1880 in Bon Aqua, Hickman Co., TN., married Louisa Cade b. 1809 in N.C. 1860 Hickman County Census, Dist. 6, Household #913: J. W. Stevenson 56 NC (That would make Joshua b. about 1804.) Louiza 51 NC L.E. 9 TN Nancy CLYMER 20 TN In Household #919: Living in household of Charles Dargherty-- James M. Stephenson 27 TN Mary L. Stevenson 16 TN I'm sure you have the FamilySearch.com--has Joshua b. abt. 1805. There was a Joshua Stephenson in the War of 1812, 2 Rg't. (Evan's) Virginia Militia. Not the one referenced above, but could be a relative. Also found Joshua W. Stephenson, Private in Civil War, F Co., 36 Indiana Infantry, enlisted 23 Oct 1861, discharged 24 Feb 1863--fought for the Union. Did a search on Ancestry.com for Joshua Stephenson and under "Compiled Genealogy", got to the FamilyHistory.com Message Board (which is part of the free area), and had 5 threads listed. Two or three of these seem to be the family you are working on and mention Joshua and Isaac Owen Stephenson. One of the submitters has posted her e-mail address. I just typed this from a few rough notes, so you may find an error; however, if any of this is new for you and you don't find any of the above, let me know and I will re-check. Hope it might help a little, and happy hunting! Velma
I am looking for information on my gggrandfather. His name was Joshua Wyatt Stephenson. His wife was Louisa Caid. She died Dec 27, 1861 and is buried at the Petty Cemetery at Pinewood. In 1870 Joshua and his daughter Louisa Elizabeth were living with his son Isaac Owen in Pinewood. Isaac was a superintendent of the cotton mill. I believe it was at Pinewood. Joshua died in Feb 1880 at Bon Aqua. Any help would be appreciated. Jerry Stephenson

Hi Gordon, Thanks for your reply. I am finding several spellings for this Surname, a few of which are COCKERHAM, COCKRUM, COCKRAM, COCKRAN and COCHRAN. I also found the following--- "based on informed speculation, it points to COTHRAN being one of the several variations of COCHRAN(E). As I have been doing research for our line, I have been looking at COCHRAN and COCKRAN as the same line, but I have no idea if this is the right thing to do. Our line is from Henry COCKRAN listed on the 1860 Hickman County Census, and just my luck, does not give an age. He is married to Polly J. (Unknown) and she is listed as 28. That would make her born about 1832, so I am guessing he would have been born around 1830. Their daughter, Sarah C. COCKRAN, b. abt. 1854, married Ben OVERBEY, b. abt. 1848. Ben and Sarah C. (COCKRAN) OVERBEY are Neil's Gr-grandparents. Your Aaron D. COCHRAN is of interest and could prove to be a connection. I found an Aaron COCHRAN listed in the 1820 Williamson County, TN. Census. He and a female (his wife) are listed as 26-44 (b. 1776 to 1794), with 2 males and 2 females under 10. Since I don't have a family breakdown for the Aaron D. COCHRAN on the 1840 Hickman County Census at this time, I can't tell if this is the same person, but it is quite possible. On the War of 1812 Muster Rolls, there is an Aaron D. COCHRAN, Private, Dyer's Reg't, Cavalry and Mtd. Gunmen, Tennessee Volunteers. Also on the 1840 Hickman County Census is Robert and William H. COCHRAN, and Daniel and Green COCKRAN. Was Mrs. Baxter Murray (your father's Aunt Pearl) a COTHRAN or COCHRAN before she married? Maybe someone on the list will recognize one of the names, or offer some advice. Thanks, Velma --------------------- <HI Velma,
Hi Hickman. How are my family and friends doing? I miss seeing the sites where my grandparents were reared and courted. I am looking again for my grandmother's eldest brother Charlie Springier, she was Ida Springier who married Charlie Frank Grimes. Seems her brother Charlie married Mattie Lee Gordon in Dec.16,1916 and was living with Thomas Patterson in the 1920 census, and that is the last I have on him. He is my last brick wall. Oddly enough my grandmother never mentioned him,I found out about Charlie when a cousin from Coble sent me a picture of the Brushy School, where there was a picture of him and his sisters. Then for more proof he was listed in the 1910 census, with the family.. Father was Nathan Jasper Springier and mother was Mattie La Tisha Belle Warren Springier... Mattie Warren's parents were Virginia (Jenny) Briggs Warren and William David Warren. I am looking for the twins she and David raised from her sister Lettititia Briggs Cooper, after her death. They were Ollie and Willie, their father was John Gilbert Cooper... Also the half-sister of my grandmother Mary Springier who married Jess T. Bates, their daughter Lois Bates who married Boss Barber? Any info? One more thing (LOLOL) another half brother was Walter Springier who married Ida Shouse,he died during the 1918 flu epidemic and I can not find where his children went? Thanks, Cindy
I agree with Ronnie that there is a wall around Hickman County. Have been trying for many years to get my William Rogers and Cynthia (Chassey) Jones out of Hickman County and they are still there. Any information that anyone would share on them or their children would be very much appreciated. William Rogers and Cynthia (Chassey) Jones children: Pleasant William James Jones Sampson Green one other son and a daughter (have heard that she married Michael McMackin I can't prove this. Please help if you can Sue
Gordon, Thanks for the new Surname List. I noticed that you are researching Cochran, and may be able to shed some light on my research. I am looking for the ancestors of Henry Cockran and his wife Polly J.. William Cockran is listed on the 1860 Hickman County Census as living next door to them. Are these Cockran's in your line? Thanks, Velma
Thanks, Gordon, for posting the surname list. I never realized there are so many on this list. Let's get active, folks! My surname list: SPICER, Solomon Eliis, born in Cannon County, TN circa 1820. This is my great-great-grandfather, and his parents are my brick wall, made of titanium or some material from space, which I'm beginning to believe is where his parents came from. The Spicer families in Hickman and Dickson counties are rumored to be cousins of my branch. If anyone has ANY information on the Spicer family, please keep mr in mind. I'm willing to share what info I have, if anyone is looking. Thanks in advance. Also searching for HATFIELD and ST. JOHN. Ronnie ronnie_moran@hotmail.com

Hi. I appreciated all the responses to my initial posting. I thought I'd see if any of you can answer some questions about some land in Hickman County that was part of the estate of John Wilson when he died in Clark County, AR, in 1854. James WILSON, executor of the will of John WILSON, deeded two hundred and fifty six acres and eleven poles on Leatherwood Creek in Hickman County to George W. BRATTIN in 1855. The deed was recorded in 1856. An acre of this land was excluded for the Mount Sharon Meeting House. I have several questions about this entry. 1. Can anyone tell me where exactly Leatherwood Creek is located, and how close it is to Snow Creek in Maury County? 2. Does anyone know anything about George W. BRATTIN? 3. I'd very much like to figure out when and how John Wilson acquired this land. Are the deed books for Hickman County from 1804 through about 1820 transcribed or on microfilm so that they are accessible to an out-of-state researcher? 4. Is there still a Mount Sharon meeting house, or are there any records from or about it in existence? Any information would be appreciated. Margaret Curley icmc@accutek.com Minden, NV
Dear Listers: I hope to be passing through Hickman Co. during a family trip to TN at the beginning of Thanksgiving week. I would like to be able to do some research for a day (I'm afraid that's all the time I have). Could anyone tell me where to start? Is there a historical society for the county and where is it located/ hours/ etc.? Do they have many old records, or were all from that time period destroyed by fire? I am researching WATTS and YOUNG's from 1820's. Deborah YOUNG was listed in 1820 Census, p. 20, of Hickman Co. Does anyone know where that would have been located? Josiah WATTS had children there in 1820's before moving to Wayne Co., and then on to Tishomingo Co., MS. I would appreciate any information and advice. Thanks, Vicki Watts
Hi. I'm new to this list, so I thought I'd post my surname interests. I am researching the WILSON and HASSELL families in Hickman County, and the MCFADDEN family in Maury County. My gggggrandfather, John WILSON was born July 28, 1782 in SC, and died May 15, 1851 in Arkadelphia, AR. He married Elizabeth December 24, 1804 in SC. They moved to Hickman Co. before 1809, when their son James was born. Since I can't find them on the 1820 Hickman Co. census, they must have moved somewhere else in TN between 1809 and 1820. I have no idea where, but it probably wasn't far away, as their son James (my ggggrandfather) married Mary Priscilla HASSELL, daughter of William Jennett and Zilpha (TARTINGTON) HASSELL, residents of Hickman Co. I have quite a bit of information on these families, which I'd be happy to share. There are also some huge gaps in what I know, especially about the Wilsons, so I'd appreciate any information about them. There were quite a few families in TN, MS, and AR connected by marriage to the Wilsons. I have varying levels of knowledge about them. Some I don't know anything more than the name, but I'd be glad to share what I have. Connecting lines were: IVERSON NELSON BAIRD BROWN ELDER GAITHER MIMS MASSIE ERWIN WEBB GLENN LIPSCOMB EWING MCGUIRE PEELER COMPTON I look forward to getting to know everyone on the list. Margaret Curley Minden, NV
Looking For My Kuykendalls lived briefly in Hardeman County Tn. John Kuykendall married Mary Eubanks there in 1880. It appears they migrated through AL/MS/TN to AR. My grand mother Emma Jane Kuykendall Parker b. abt 1891 was in Shelby County, TN. Millington in 1920 and in Memphis in 1926 at the time of her death. She was married to William Parker. John Kuykendall was thought to be from IL but appeared in Hardeman CO. TN in 1880 to marry Mary Eubanks from MS and in Tipton CO. on voters registration 1891. Appreciate any help or suggestions. Hello Everyone, This is my first post to the list, and it isnt a very good one. The reason being is that I am looking for my Calvin Blankenship without much to go on. I found Calvin BLankenship married to Deliah on the 1850 Texas County, MO census. Living next door to Calvin is WIlliam Blankenship and his wife, Pamela Jane. Since Calvin was only a couple of years older than William, I have to assume they are related, if not brothers, because they were the only Blankenships in TExas County at this time and they were both born in TN and both of their wives in IL (just thought that was interesting). SInce Calvin Died during the civil war (there is no record on him except a muster roll), he wasnt around when the government started asking where their parents were born. I followed Deiliah until 1880. I estimate her time of death between 1881-1883. I followed William, and he lists his parents as also being born in TN ..... although its a shot in the dark, is there anyone out there that has a link to a BLANKENSHIP's that had a son named Calvin, (who was born abt 1820-25) and/or William (b. abt.1823-1826). I do not have Calvin's parents names or their wives maiden names. I am hoping to connect them to someone who might be able to shed some light on this for me .... Thank you in advance!!!! Thank you! The particular one, referred to in my posting, that married Nancy Ann Sullivan is James Karroll "Jim" Tidwell. Is he one of the Tidwell's you are looking for? If not, please tell me what Tidwell's you need, and I will be glad to see if I have them.
