Gordon, I have gotten back a lookup for Aaron D. Cochran in the 1840 Hickman County Census. Males: 1 (40-49); Females: 1 (Under 5), 1 (20-20). It may lend more questions than answers. My thought is that it looks like a daughter and her child, but I have no way of knowing. Could be someone not even related. His wife is not listed in the household, but she is named in his Will dated 5/22/1862, Hickman Co. I am assuming that you saw the abstract of Aaron's Will posted earlier. Josephine Isabel was not named, and we have her date of death as 1910. 1820 Williamson County Census does show 2 females, so I don't know why she was not mentioned. I haven't found where Aaron was for the 1850 or 1860 Census count, so the search goes on. Thanks to everyone who has helped us out with information. Velma

Hi List Members, Does any one know where one could find the OLD MARRIAGE RECORDS (Subject line)? What caught my eye was the reference "(from Leeper's "Marriages of Hickman County")" in the clip below which was in a recent message which I think may have gone to the list. Is Leeper's "Marriages of Hickman County"a book or a collection (or part of one)of legal records? Is it available on a web-site? I'll be grateful for any info. LEEPER is one of our family surnames. TIA for any clues. Gene Atkin > > > > OLD MARRIAGE RECORDS OF HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE BOOK 1 > > > > Cockrum, Henry to ________Pickett. No other information. Am researching my ggrandfather James L. LUNSFORD. 1860 Hickman Co. census has him age 17, living with John WRIGHT age 37, Joice A. BAILEY, Joicey A. BAILEY (Dau of Joice) Mary A. WRIGHT, Robert WRIGHT. Sister and Brother of John. I have no proof yet that this James Lunsford is the right one. 1850 Hickman Co. Census has a Wm. J. Lunsford age 6 living with Robert WRIGHT and Martha (wife) who is the father of John Wright, whos house James shows up in 1860. Also have info that either his sister or mother was Emily Lunsford listed in 1860 census with another family and being mentally impared. I have run into a great deal of trouble researching my gparents and ggrandparents in Hickman and Humphreys Co. It appears they could not read or write (CSA Pension signed with X). Does anyone have hints on where to go for information? It also appears they avoided the census takers too. Any information that anyone can supply would be greatly appreciated.
One of my brick walls: Hooten, T.C. has only Hooten as fathers name and nothing on his mother on his death certificate. According to the "OLD MARRIAGE RECORDS OF HICKMAN CO., TN. VOL 1" Hooten, T.C. to Hadie Miller (I) 21 Dec 1894 (M) 23 Dex 1894, by T.J. Walker, J.P., Bondsman W.D. Hooten Book 8, page 92. T.C. left Tn. and went to Keller, Tarrant Co., TX., where all of his children was born. In his obits it is stated that he lived in Tarrant Co. for 50 years which meant he must have arrived there in 1900. Hadie was a daughter, adopted or blood, of David C. Miller of Hicjman Co. and probably Elizabeth Howell, a boarder in David C. Miller's home in the 1880 Hickman Co. census. I wish I knew if W.D. Hooten was a relative and how so. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks Lucian LaNoy Collins Golffer4@worldnet.att.net www.geocities.com/rainforest/3860/ Researching: AINSWORTH, BATEMAN, COLLINS, JONES, MARTIN, PEARRE and related.
Terry, Yes, we can get attachments. Please do send the picture of Johnson Tidwell. I'll get Neil to take a look. Velma
Hi Terry, Thanks so much for helping with the information from the Wills of the Hickman County Cochran/Cochrans. That gives me some more names and avenues to start searching. You asked about our Overby/Overbey connection. This is what I have. Neil's grandparents are Celicia Jeanetta "Jane" Overbey and David Johnson "Davie" Tidwell. She was the daughter of "Ben" Overbey (I have found both Benjamin and Ruben as his name.) and Sarah C. Cockran, dau. of Henry and Mary J. "Polly" (Unknown). Ben Overbey is the son of Edmond Overbey and Jane (Unknown), a brother to your ancestor, James Daniel Overbey, Jr., both being sons of Daniel Overbey and Emily "Milly" Tyler. If you happen to have Edmond Overbey's wife Jane's maiden name, I sure need that. All I have is that she was born about 1820. I am also needing the maiden name of Mary, the wife of Reuben Tyler. I have made me a sheet of how you connect to a William Cockran, who married Mary, and put your name on the top so I can let you know if I can link all these folks. I'll be glad when Ancestry gets the Census Images on line, because I think that will help me. They say they will be on by or shortly after Jan. 31, 2001, but they are not adding them very fast. In the meantime, I'll keep searching. I need to find out if anyone has published any "Settlement Books" for Hickman County. I'll let you know what I find. Please, always correct me if you find an error in these lines. Thanks, Velma
I have a picture of a Johnson Tidwell, which I figured was Dave Johnson Tidwell, can you get attachments. If so I will dig it out and email you a copy and you can see if it is him. HICKMAN COUNTY TENNESSEE WILLS 1866 - 1982. COMPILED BY OLGA DOTSON. AARON D. COCHRAN Wife: Nancy, she is to have my negro man, Alfred and other slaves. Sons: John Anderson, Aron, William H. And R. C. Cochran. Daughter: Mary Jane Harmon. Aaron D. Cochran DATED: May 22, 1862 I am not sure if this is the whole will or what. Here is another one I found. L. L. COCHRAN BROTHER: Wm. H. Cochran, to have everything I have. In event he is not living a the time of my death, divided among the following: Earl Cochran, Johnny Cochran, Henerietta Cochran Canon (children of Henry Cochran., Charlotte Ann Cochran Goodman and Judy Cochran Vates, (children of Walker Cochran). EXECUTRIX: Wm. H. Cochran DATED: May 13, 1974 L. L. COCHRAN HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE CEMETERY RECORDS BOOK 2 COCHRAN CEMETERY (HENRY) - is in the Lick Creek area and on the Henry Cocran farm. Henry was the grand-father of Willie Cochran who was principal at Lyles for many years. This cemetery was searched for markers by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Tatum who state there are about 7 graves marked only by fieldstones. Names are from family records. Rechecked by Ruby Tatum & Sybil Head in 1987 who state it remains the same as at last reading Cochran, Henry - g-father of Willie) Cochran, Mrs. Henry - g-mother of Willie) Cochran, Infant son of Noah & Amanda Harrison Cochran) OLD MARRIAGE RECORDS OF HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE BOOK 1 Cockrum, Henry to ________Pickett. No other information. (from Leeper's "Marriages of Hickman County"). Now about the other thing, first off I had forgotten about that website, I have not had that account in some time and thought that it had been taken down. About the little dog, my husband and sons worked landscaping and were called mowdawgs and that was their little input to the website. I am interested in how we connect on the Overbey's and also have question if you can lay claim to a Cockran, Wm Cockrum/Cockran, married to Mary Spears (my gr-gr-grandmother), she is actually Mary Bryant Spears, daughter of Jeremiah Bryant and Sarah. I have them listed as married in1875, but by 1880 she is back taking care of her parents. I have been told that she was at one time divorced, I assumed from her first husband William Spears/Speers, they had 4 children, 3 of them died in early 1850's the fourth Cynthia Spears (my gr-grandmother) married to William Henry Overby/Overbey. I have no dates for Wm. Cochrum/Cockran, so if you come across this Wm. Cockran in your lines, would you mind helping out with some dates for him? Hope this helps. Jerry, You are welcome. If you have not had an opportunity to check the Cemetery Books for Hickman County, you might want to visit Tngennet.org/hickman. Some nice folks are listed there who have volunteered to do lookups, and could check those for your Joshua. I sure hope you can find him. Good Luck!! Velma
I have both cemetery books and didn't find anything. Velma - Thanks a bunch for all your help. I really appreciate you taking the time to do some digging. I was in Hickman County in the summer of 1998 hoping to find where Joshua might be buried. Unfortunately, I was unable to find him. I did find Louisa buried in the Petty Cemetery, for which I was grateful. Thanks again- Jerry
