    2. Hi, The only thing I have on John W. Short is Rhoda Smith - Wife of John W. Short - Nov. 10, 1844- Mar 14, 1910. listed in the Hickman Co., Cemetery Book. Little Rock Cemetery is located on Mill Creek Rd., about 1/2 mile from the Little Rock Church of Christ. This is what it has. I'm sorry nothing on his dates.. 2. HI, There are still Lankfords living in Lewis Co., TN. One man, Hubert Lankford, is, I believe, one of the oldest men living in Lewis. He lives on Indian Creek and is very knowledgeable. 2. Gale Carter
    3. Hi Sonja, You do not say what confuses you about the Elijah Langford family. I do not know a lot about the Langford/Lankford family, and do not have Elijah in my data base. I don't know if my information even will give you a clue. As far as I know, I do not have any direct ancestors with that surname. I do have Lankford cousins. I pick up the Lankford family in Effingham County, Illinois. Evidently there was a move from North Carolina to Hickman (and possibly Lewis) County, Tennessee, and then some went to Effingham County Illinois. The information I am gathering has the two spellings interchanged. My great grandfather married Lola Royston Lankford, in Effingham Co. She was his third wife and the widow of John S. Lankford. The most information I have is from my Lankford cousins who descend from John Hickman Lankford and Rodney Rhode Rentfrow. The Hensleys, Rentfrows (Renfro etc.), Tarrents (Tarrence etc.)Sharps, and Coheas, marry among themselves a number of times. Do you have any of those surnames in your database? If you do, you might look to Effingham County, Illinois. The oldest Lankford I have is John Hickman Lankford b. Abt. 1791 in North Carolina. I am his 3rd great grand niece through his wife. Hopes this helps. M. 3. Hi. I'm wondering what is known about the BRYANT families who were on the 1820 Hickman County census. I've recently found information indicating that the second son of my John and Elizabeth WILSON was John Bryant WILSON, so I'm wondering if Elizabeth might have been a BRYANT. If anyone has information about who the BRYANTS were, where they came from, etc, I'd be very glad to hear from you. Margaret Curley icmc@accutek.com Minden, NV

    1. Re: [TNHICKMA] Cochran
    2. Hello Gordon, thank you for responding to my query on Cochran. I'm not sure either what is really the correct spelling of the surname. Our Coughrans (in Texas) spelled it this way, however, I have also heard it was spelled Caughron (a and o inverted)? Both William A. (the father) and William W. (the son) were in the Civil War. The father being on the Union side, the son on the Confederate. Later they both moved to Texas and established a large ranch in Anatosca County. Some of William A.'s family (I think brothers) moved on out to California and establish ranches out there. It seems like they have always been connected withthe cattle business. I'm not sure I will ever get to the bottom of this either, but will keep on trying. Should I, too, come across any information I will share it with you. My connection is through the son, William Wesley Coughran. Marji Morton

    3. Hi Marji, I looked through my email files and I don't see a correspondence between us before, but I could be wrong. I don't have much on the Cochran's in fact I have my own quandary over pronounciation and spelling going on. I believe that Josephine Isabel COCHRAN married Alexander Montgomery BELL on 9/16/1869 in Hickman County. According to IGI indices, she is the daughter of A.D. (Aaron?) COCHRAN and Nancy BOWEN. In reviewing some information, I came across a listing from the Hickman County Tennesse Cemetery Records, Part 1, by Jill Garrett and Iris H. McClain that has a COTHRAN Cemetery located on what was known as the old (blankedout) place in District 6 out in a field. It goes on to say that on 10.31.1965 Mrs. Baxter Murray (my father's Aunt Pearl) said she knew the following people were buried there. Bell, Montgomery Bell, Josephine Cothran, _____ (g-grandfather of Mrs. Murray) Cothran, _____ (g-grandmother of Mrs. Murray) Mrs. Murray pronounced the name as COTHRAN not COTHAM. Now here is my problem, dear old Aunt Pearl isn't around to ask. It is obvious that these are my kin, (would love to know where this cemetery is - does anybody have a clue?), but there are no COTHRAN's listed in the Hickman County Census that I can find. COCHRAN like it is listed in the IGI index (which is not known for its blazing accuracy) however can be found in the Census, in fact, I found an Aaron D. Cochran in the 1840 Hickman County Census. Given the accents and the literacy levels of Tennessee in the 1800s, I am not sure I will ever get to the bottom of this. Sorry Iacn't be of more help to you, but should I come across any information that might help you I will forward it on. 3. Unless they've moved in the last few months, the Hickman County Historical Society has a room in the back of the old courtroom in the courthouse on the public square in Centerville, the County seat. The folks there are very knowledgeable. The public library is another good source. They are very helpful to genealogists.
