    1. [TNHICKMA] 1808 Hickman County location
    2. John M. Scroggins
    3. In 1808, Barton Scroggins (probably then a resident of Dickson County) received a grant of land in Hickman County, as described below. The land was apparently sold by the sheriff to Asa Schute in 1809, and Schute sold it to James Lewis in 1813. My question is, can anyone familiar with the area (1) describe this location in modern-day terms and (2) tell me if it is within the current boundaries of Hickman County, or if not, which present-day county? "50 acres in Hickman County in the First District on Indian Creek waters of Tumbling Creek of Duck River. Beginning at a white oak on the bluff of Indian Creek on Edward Stringers North West corner running East with said Stringers line twenty poles to a dogwood; thence West crossing Indian Creek at sixteen poles in all eighty five poles an done half pole to a dogwood and sourwood on the West side of a hill; thence South one hundred and two poles crossing Indian Creek at one hundred and three poles in all one hundred and five poles to a dogwood and ironwood on the north boundary of John Johnson's occupancy survey; thence East with said Johnsons line crossing Indian Creek at two poles in all forty poles to said Johnsons North East corner and Edward Stringers North West corner; thence with said Stringers line East twenty poles; thence North with said Stringers line forty four poles to the beginning. Survey July 20, 1808"

    3. >Sorry, didn't realize I'd leave out the mailing list by going to another >e-mail box. Here is what I wrote: I also have the Spence's Hickman County book, so don't spend a lot of time looking up Joel C, but thanks. I have little on Hobbs/Potter, but I'll give you what I have and if you can add anything, please let me know. The only reason I place the lines together is because of copies of deeds I found in Hickman County. I have a deed dated 8 Feb 1847 between Aaron Potter and J. C. Hobbs of of Hickman Co to Elizabeth Potter of Hickman for two tracts of land on the waters of Beaver Creek Branch of Piney River containing two fifty acre tracts of land. It is witnessed by Joel H Potter and Levi C Ragsdale. Second, I have deed dated 13 Febuary 1823 from Joel Hobbs of Hickman to William Potter of Hickman for 35 acres on the East bank of Piney River up tan troughs hollow. Witnessed by J. L. White, Conelius D White (our Joel's brother in law) and Joel C Hobbs (see note below). Any other info I have is from census books (I haven't checked films since this is not our main branch) and from postings on web sites. That is how I found the Ruth Hobbs/Aaron Potter connection. Do you have any marriage record sources? Note: There are several Joel Hobbs in Hickman County and other TN areas. In 1820 there was an older Joel, and John and William Hobbs in Hickman. Our Joel C was born 1804. Ther was a Joel A who died in 1848 in Humphreys County where our line later lived (may be son of our Joel C). And there was a Joel C Hobbs who had a wife in Lincoln County in 1830's and sons who had land in Hickman County around our Joel C Hobbs. I am trying to determine if the Joel C in Lincoln came from Hickman and if our Joel C Hobbs is his son or nephew. It seems logical since Ruth later went to Lincoln County before she died. I found a Hickman County deed from Joel Hobbs to Joel C Hobbs, witnessed by Joel Hobbs, Jr., so it is confusing. It was conveyed about he time our Joel would have married. Which one is the father of Ruth?? If she was born about 1802 she could be sister of my Joel C Hobbs or cousin. Do you know where she was born--that might help. It seems I have more questions than answers. Miriam _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Their son Bazzel B. Bates is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery. Sorry. Leonard. -- Leonard J. 3. My Grandmother's mother was Virginia Belle Allen, born Pinewood (1867-1925). She was from the second family of Charles Moses Allen (1823-1884) and his second wife, Vivannah Anna Grimes (1842-aft 1900). Vivannah was the daughter of John W. Grimes (1801-1861) and Nancy C. -?- (1809-aft 1880). This line has been more difficult to work. Family died out early, but anxious to share what I know. Looking for other cousins. Bazzel was the son of Robert Bates (1786-1834) and Elisabeth Perry. Robert and Elisabeth are buried on was was their farm near Shady Grove Cemetery. Bazzel had a large family. Sarah Baird (1806-1881) was the daughter of P. William Baird (1794-1837) and Nancy Pullum (1784-1859). William and Nancy had a large family. I try to take every line as far as I can. 2. Leonard J. McCown
    3. My grandmother was born in Pinewood, Hickman Co., Tennessee in 1889 and came to Texas when she was about 14. Her name was Fannie Maude Beasley. For several generations back her lines are all in Hickman Co., or Williamson Co. Her father was Robert Franklin Beasley (1864-1935). He married Virginia Belle Allen (1867-1925). Robert's father was William Hilliard Beasley (1835-1891). He was twin and burned to death in Nashville. William married Narcissa Ann Bates (1840-1894). William's father was James Baugh Beasley (1793 NC-1865). He married Mary Mitchell, probably about 1817 in Williamson Co. James father was Barnet Beasley (abt 1766, Virginia - 1850/60, Hickman Co. I would love to hear from cousins...I do not track only my direct lines, but all of them, so probably have information to share. I do have a web page, but do not show living family, nor my notes. Because my Grandma was very dear to me, Hickman Co., is too. I wish I could say Tennessee the way she did! Leonard. -- Leonard J. 1. [TNHICKMA] New to List
    2. Hello to Hickman County List: My name is Onafern Warren and I live in Missouri. I am searching for any information on John Warren. The only connection I have to Hickman county is that John and wife Margret were listed in the 1850 census there. It lists that they were both born in Tennessee. Margret Ivey and John A. Warren were married in Lawrence county, Tn. Sept. 19, 1849. Their son was born November 10, 1855 in Tennessee, but do not know if they were still in Hickman county. Their sons name was William Calvin Warren. He had a nickname of Cahalle or Cahelle, etc. When they were married in 1849, Margrets parents, Isaiah and Mary Ivy lived in Lawrence County. By the 1860 census these people had moved to Missouri. However, John was not with his wife and son, they were in Isaiah's household. Family history says that John went to Kansas where he became a wheat farmer. The story goes on to say that although John sent for them to come to him, they were afraid to make the trip alone, and he never came back for them. Basically, this is all I know about John. So far I have been unable to find him in a Kansas Census and Margret disappeared after the 1860 census, although we think she married a John Green. So, I would be very, very deeply grateful if someone might know something, anything, about these people. Onafern
