    1. [TNHICKMA] Spicer Surname
    2. Veronica Moran
    3. Hi, fellow diggers, I'm researching the Spicer name. My gggrandfather, Solomon Ellis Spicer, was born in Cannon County, Tn. He was born in 1820, married (1) Delitha Hatfield - 1840 (2) Josephine St. John Smith - 1865. After the Civil War, all the Spicers moved away from said county. I'm trying to ascertain their migration patterns. Solomon died in Weakley Co., Tn. in 1901. He had brothers named Burrell, Joseph, and Henry living in Cannon Co. at the same time he lived there, but I can't establish their whereabouts after the war. Any info on the Spicers would be greatly appreciated. You can contact me off-line at my e-mail address: mvmoran@usit.net Sincerely, Veronica Spicer Moran

    1. Joel PEW/PUGH, b. ca 1790
    2. Macalyne Fristoe
    3. Members of at least three generations of my family have been searching without success for the origins of Joel PUGH/PEW, who was described in the History of Hickman Co. [Tennessee] by Spence and Spence (1900) as being "from Kentucky." That is our only clue about where he came from. Joel PUGH settled about 1810 in Shady Grove (Duck River, Hickman Co.), TN, in the midst of new settlers, many from Virginia and Kentucky. He was a "millwright and wood-workman." What part of Kentucky did other original Shady Grove settlers come from? If I knew that it might help me know which of the Kentucky PUGH/PEW families he was from. About 1810 he married Prudence "Jane" NICKS, who was born in Guilford Co., NC, in 1794 and moved to Shady Grove about 1805, when she was 11, with her parents, George NICKS and Jean ANDERSON NICKS, and siblings. Because she moved to Tennessee at such a young age, I assume that she first met Joel at some time after her arrival there. Joel and Jane had at least seven children: George Roddy, Sarah Emily, Jane Amanda, John W., Mary Melissa, Margaret Etta, and Samuel. Joel was a private in the War of 1812, fighting with many other Tennesseans in the bloody Fort William engagement. He was reported to have died at age 36 in Hinds Co., Mississippi, in 1830, cause unknown. (Since Hinds County, Mississippi, and Hickman County, Tennessee, are both on the Natchez Trace, I wonder if he was on a trip to Natchez or New Orleans when he died.) A David PEW and a Joel PEW, both heads of households, were listed in Hickman Co, Tennessee, in the 1820 Census. Joel died shortly before the 1830 census. Any clues about Joel PUGH/PEW will be very much appreciated. Macalyne Watkins Fristoe Lafayette, IN Transplanted Tennesean

    3. Attention all existing subscribers to the Hickman County Mail List. This list's administration was adopted by myself, Gordon Harbison. If you have any questions, problems, concerns, suggestions, hints, advice, or special needs, please don't hesitate to contact me at gmharbison@mediaone.net. I do not live in Hickman County, just have a lot of kinfolk from there and the surrounding counties, Dickson, Maury, Williamson, Davidson, etc. I am a member of those mail lists as well and would like to see more activity on this list than I have seen lately. To start, I would like to do a modified type of roll call. I would like each of you to email me off-list at gmharbison@mediaone.net, the surnames you are researching and your email address in the following format: Surname; email address For example: Harbison; gmharbison@mediaone.net Baker; gmharbison@mediaone.net Bell; gmhabrison@mediaone.net etc, etc, etc, If you could also be so kind, please put TNHICKMA roll call in the subject line. I will compile this list and post it on a web page where all can view who is researching who, and make their connections easier. It also keeps the quantity of emails in your inbox down, snce we will not have to go thorugh a roll call on the list every time a new member subscribes. I have seen this done very successfully on the Dickson County list, so I am stealing Cher's wonderful idea. I hope to meet all of you and make your acquantance on this list. Let's keep this thing fun and rewarding. We have a powerful tool to make our family connections here, let's make the best of it. Look forward to hearing from all of you. 1. LEEPER (LEIPER), DAVIDSON, DAVIS, ROBINSON
    2. Eugene L. Atkin
    3. Hi List members, We are researching the descendants of Hugh LEEPER (LEIPER) who lived for some time in Maury County, and died October 6, 1818 in Hickman County. His grave is in Old Stand Cemetery in Shady Grove. He and two of his brothers, James and George, came out to Ft. Nashboro in 1780, and that spring, all three signed the Cumberland Compact. Hugh was probably in his 20s when he arrived at Ft. Nashboro (Nashville) and probably married Martha DAVIDSON there shortly thereafter. The two children I know of are Hugh Jr. and Sarah Mary. Hugh, Jr. married Sarah (Sally) Mary DAVIS in 1822, and practiced medicine for a time over in Williamsport. The sister, also a Sally, married Johnson HENSLEY in 1826. My guess is that Hugh LEEPER, Sr. died in Hickman County at the home of a son or daughter. He was probably about 60. I suppose he had more than the two children, but have no specific knowledge of any others. Am glad to exchange information about this family, and hope there are some Hickman Co. descendants. Below I've pasted in an outline descendant tree with such basic info as I currently think likely. Hugh, Sr. is the second child in the second generation Mistakes in this list are certainly possible. Not everything is proven. (I use ref #s for direct ancestors only.) Of the brothers, James was killed early at the fort, and George probably re-located in Kentucky. I have some family lore passed on by "Aunt Ada" that her father, Butler Leonard, "was a soldier in the Confederate war". I can find nothing to corroborate this. Butler Leonard Tucker is not listed in "Tennesseans In The Civil War", there is a listing for B.D.Tucker. The 1860 Humphreys County census has a B.D.Tucker 60 listed along with his wife Martha 53 and an 18 year old male Butler. Could this be my Butler Leonard? Is B.D. his father or grandfather? If anyone can help with this I would be extremely grateful. Thanks in advance for your time and effort, Rick Tucker Gibson Co.TN

    3. I am looking for any information on the family of Frank Tucker. He is found in the 1900,1910, and 1920 Census living in Only, Hickman County, Tennessee. Only is located in the Eigth Civil District. His first wife was Alice Blackwell, his second wife was Ada Wiles. Frank's father and mother are listed as being born in Tennessee on all the above censuses. I would really like to find the names for his mother and father, but any additional info would be greatly appreciated. This is my brick wall !!!! Thanks, Rick
