The census is available on microfilm from the National Archives as the single-roll publication T496, "Census Roll, 1835, of the Cherokee Indians East of the Mississippi". Now thanks to the efforts of Terri Moore, you can access the index to this census on the World Wide Web. There is no complicated search software, just a table of contents leading to alphabetically arranged pages, each of which gives a name and one or more pages (duplication of names appears to be fairly common). Although sparse, this index can be a valuable key to locating your Cherokee ancestors. Its quick access and commonsense approach can help you avoid the expense of ordering a copy of the microfilm if your ancestor's name does not appear, and it provides you with the surety that the microfilm will be helpful if your ancestor's name does appear in the index.
