Peggy, thank you so much for all this information. It does narrow down the date of death a bit (by or before Oct. 1840). Apparently David had no will, but he was rather young and he probably died suddenly. Odd that his sons are not mentioned though, since they seem to have inherited his farm and then sold it, in adulthood, to their stepfather John Martin, who I think acted as their guardian after marrying their mother.
