    3. All I know about this John MARTIN is that he was 41, b in NC, in the 1860 census. He was a farmer with a Conyersville P.O. address, in Dist. 14, and he had md., in the 1840s, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Puckett) HOPE, widow of David Beattie Hope. They had a son Beaty H. Martin 15, and a son John E. Martin 8, listed in that same census. I suspect that the older son Beaty H. was named for Eliz.'s deceased husband David Beattie HOPE. John and Eliz. are also listed, Conyersville P.O., in 1850 with the 4 HOPE boys, son Beatty H. 5 and a son Andrew M. 3. In 1870 they are with son J. E. 18, and son B. H., 25, with his wife Medora and their 2 young children. John must have died by 1880. Eliz., 63, is living with her son B. H. Murtain [sic] and his wife Dora and their children in 1880 in Dist. 14, Henry Co. in 1880. I don't know if John was married before Eliz. or not; if so, his children must have been grown by 1850 (not likely since he was only 30-31 then), or living with (maternal?) relatives, or he didn't have any children from a previous marriage - there probably wasn't one. There was a 54 yr old Abraham Martin, also b NC, and family living two houses/farms away from John in 1860, but it's a fairly common name - may have been an older brother? 3 pages from John and Eliz. in 1860, there was a young John W. MARTIN, 23, and family, also in Conyersville area, b TN, an officer of some sort (unspecified). He lived next to the sheriff and the tax collector. Don't know if he's related to the others ... John MARTIN was named guardian of his HOPE stepsons, David's 4 boys, after his marriage ot Eliz. He bought land (David's farm?) from them and in at least one case, loaned one of them money to buy land, with a HOPE family slave, probably inherited from the boys' grandfather Adam HOPE of Davidson Co. TN, as collateral. Hope this helps... --- [email protected] wrote: > Hi, > > I am interested in your John Martin in Henry > County, Tennessee.
