Dick was born 8 Oct 1882 in Tennessee (I'm sure in Henry County since as far as I know his father never left there, being born and dying there - and his parents were married there on 9 Dec 1881). Dick married first on 9 Mar 1904 in Henry Co. to Beulah Steeley (who was the daughter of Mary Louise Cole and Dr. Richard B. Steeley). Beulah and Dick had 5 children before her death on 22 Aug 1911. Needing a mother for his children, Dick then married on 27 May 1913 in Henry Co., Tn., to a widow who was almost 20 years older than him, Marina Elizabeth "Bettie" Upchurch Lowther (dau. of Martha Ann Rebecca Wynns and John Frank Upchurch; she was first married to Thomas E Lowther and had 2 daughters with him), who raised his children and thought the world of her young handsome husband. After Dick's death on 17 June 1927 in Henry Co. "in the line of duty" as sheriff, Bettie was named a! s the first woman sheriff of Henry Co., Tn. and finished his term - although Dick's brother, James Alfred "Alf" Caldwell was actually the acting sheriff who moved his family into the jail building in Paris and completed Dick's term of office. When Dick registered for the draft on 12 Sept 1918, he was described as Height: - Tall; Build - Medium; Eyes - Blue; Hair - Black. At that time he gave his occupation as farmer and justice of the peace, residing on RFD 1, Springville, Tn. His 5 children were Kathleen, Clarice, Rosa, T.P. Jr. (Bud) and George. Do you want more? I can give you the newspaper account of his death and an "almost" first hand account of his death that was written by a daughter of Alf. Just let me know what you want. See the 2 photos attached and also a pic of his signature.
