    3. Hello, Where do you find records of death certificates? I know that you can send off for them, but are they on record anywhere? Every time I email a volunteer about info on a person, they always go to the library & check to see if their death certificate is recorded..How do I go about finding records of death? And if I can't, how do they get them? Just curious! Thanks muchly, Joan Broach Morris

    3. Write, or walk to the County Court House in the county where the person died. Unless the courthouse burned, which is not unusual, you should be able to find the certificates. Also, here in IL one may apply online to the IL archives and receive death certificates 1916 onward. Hope this helps. 3. Joan, I suspect that in Henry County, the volunteer is getting the information from the funereal home books that have been compiled from those records. The local health departments have them only up to a certain year like maybe the last 10 or so years. They then send them to the Vital Statistics of the state. If I want an old birth certificate, I have always had to send for it in Nashville for the TN death certificate.or some other site that offers this service. I could be wrong but with all my years of researching in Henry County, I have never heard of getting a copy of an old one locally.
