    3. When I show my mom stuff about her family, I could talk to the walls and get more excitement than I do from her. She says, 'their dead and I didn't know them'. What enthusiasum she shows. My dad shows more interest in family history than my mom which always kind of surprised me. Lol, but any interest is more than I see from her but I do it because it is what I like to do and it gives me joy to find out where and who I came from. I never thought about asking my family about any of their ancestors. I have been asking around and I have found out alot of information just by asking my grandparents and parents about them. I have scattered mine out and made copies because I have lost alot of information. Joan, you are very welcome. I have met alot of family on-line. They are so nice. Lol, you'd never think they could be family. I have met people from all over the country. My granddad had a whole trunk full of pictures and family information and when he passed away and his wife (my step grandma) passed away..........her daughter, who isn't in anyway related took it all and won't let any of my family see it. When he was alive, I use to beg them to look in it. I never got to. You all are so nice and that is also what makes this that much more fun and addictive.........the passing down of the old names is a nice way to rememebr them by............... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Dunlap" <kdunlap59@comcast.net> To: <tnhenry@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2007 11:57 PM Subject: Re: [TNHENRY] GENEALOGY IN SCHOOLS > I've really enjoyed reading all the messages on this. 2. Let's just do both and cross our fingers. Web sites do often change their address and it makes it hard to find the info again. Hopefully, the information on the big servers will remain there. Peggy M. T.

    3. Supposedly they did come from Northampton county, NC. Which Futrell is you earliest TN ancester? Daniel came across the border from Trigg and Christian County, Ky after the War of 1812, which he participated in. It's been suggested (but with no concrete proof that I've seen) that he was the son of Sanders Futrell. Both he and his wife Mary Burden or Burken are brick wall for me. 2. I would love to rely on my family to care enough to keep up with everything that I've found, but I am putting my money on the Internet. Even if this generation doesn't care, maybe two hundred years from now one of my descendants will check out their version of a "media copy" of the 2007 Rootsweb Henry County, Tennessee Mailing List Archives or the Rootsweb Family Trees circa 2007 to see if they can find a hint of their family mentioned. Funny to think that what I am writing right now might be pored over for clues in 2207 the same as we do with old documents right now. That's a little creepy to really think about. But if you're reading this and wondering what my maiden name was, it was Miller. Peggy Jean Miller Trevathan born April 5, 1950 in Niagara Falls, New York. There!!!

    3. Peggy, I hope you are right about the internet...but I am not as confident as you are about the records still being around..I am having trouble now with websites that I have saved in my favorites with genealogy info on them..Some of them are already gone. I hate to copy everything that I see, so I just save them all in my favorites, but obviously that is not such a good idea!! Several have disappeared!! I just can't imagine anything online being there that long!! I know that I could have not gotten anywhere without the internet.. I would really love to believe that my descendants will 1 day be reading what I have written online..I hope you're right!! I just wish more stuff I am searching for was on there now!! 2. Thanks for the nice words, Myrlene. And you are right, Teresa, that knowing about your ancestors is not very common. My husband knew that one of his grandfathers was called Fishman (a nickname). That's it. And he really cared for this man, but I had a time finding out anything to begin doing research with. I finally resorted to the SSDI and ordering the grandparents applications to get a start. Some people just don't care where they came from and I married one of them. So I can't really claim that not knowing your family history is something that can be blamed on today's young families. Peggy M. T.

In order to get an A, we had to do 5 generations..Well, I had no problem doing that..Amazingly I still kept mine all these years..Then when my kids got freshman, they had to do the same project..Luckily I still had mine, but it took some time to get my husband's side..no one wanted to be bothered..After all these years, I knew I had them, but I could not remember where I had put them for safe keeping!! Finally after looking in every possible hiding place, I found them..Still to this day do I wonder if I stopped at 5 generations because that is all I needed to get my A...Back then I'm sure I could have gotten much more, but I had no interest in doing that..Why did I care to know those old dead people?? I am so thankful that I am a total packrat & kept them all these years..It was better than any Christmas I ever had reading through all those old names & dates..It was sooo cute...my granddaughter said, "Look NaNa, the paper makes it look old." I have tried to make it all interesting enough to my granddaughters that they will want to treasure all my hard work..My oldest granddaughter shares my love of the old photos, and my middle 1 the graveyard hopping..I hope I had made a good enough impression on where they came from to want to be able to share it with their families 1 day..I sure hope so!! I don't think my husband is that thrilled about it, but he never complains!! When I was a kid, I always mowed the local church cemeteries...at that point I could have cared less about my ancestors..But, I always enjoyed the peacefulness of them..Then as a teenager, we always parked in this real old remote cemetery out in the boonies called Asbury Graveyard...You know the kind of place that gave you gossebumps even in the daylight...At night you definitely had to cuddle up to someone to ward off boogie men..Ha!Ha! Those were the good old days!! If I had of known then what I know now, I might possibly have killed 2 birds with 1 stone...Ha!Ha! Although Asbury Graveyard is the neatest graveyard I have ever seen!! It is probably the oldest 1 that I have ever been in, and they are still burying people there today..I know I have some very fond memories of it...possibly I should buy a plot there.. Well when the weather straightens up, my granddaughter & I will be off again...If any of you people out there need any tombstone pics...just let me know. I'll be glad to oblige you...I live in Calloway Co Ky, but I go over in TN all the time.. Later.. Joan Broach Morris

    3. Peggy, My niece called with the same request. I don't think it's that the teacher doesn't understand genealogy, but rather with today's families being so far from extended family and divorces; she figured most kids would be lucky to know their grandparents. When I started genealogy, my MIL knew only her parents and grandparents. Her grandparents were easy. Mammy and Pappy Crick and Mammy and Pappy Keith. She had no clue what their real names were. Now she does. <G> For my niece, I sent her a PDF of her ancestry and told her about the family's castle. Sure they lived in it about 10 generations ago, but she still thought it was cool. We just have to remember, that the teacher wants this done in a weekend, and most of us have been doing this for years. And unlike many of the children in her class who can tell you why their ancestors came to America, because they came in the car with them, my niece's ancestors had more complex reasons why they came 6 or 7 generations ago. ;) And many of them I haven't even traced back far enough to find them before they were on this continent. (Which at that time, I hesitate to call America.) 3. What a great experience, to pass your love of genealogy & your family on to your grandson. He will remember that the rest of his life. 3. Peggy, There is a cemetery in Weakley County I am not sure of which one it is. Maybe some of you reading this knows where it is. My great great granddad James Monroe MCCLAIN is buried there. He was born June 25, 1855 died April 11, 1911. Does anyone have any pictures of him, his family, or his grave? Peggy, I also grew up around cemeteries and I use to look at the graves and imagine about their lives. My dad used to take us every week sometimes twice a week to visit his dad's and family's cemetery and other family cemeteries. I know them know like the back of my hand. I feel comfortable there. My kids kinda think I am morbid but that's kids. It probably never occured to your grandson's teacher about all of the grandparents he has. I never knew what a long line and that I had so much family and how they multiply until I started researching them. Now though that I have started researching them, I can't stop. It is like a puzzle. It is addictive. I remember going to the cemeteries growing up and my dad would tell stories about the family and the people he remembered from his youth who were buried there. I do that with my kids now but they just don't seem to appreciate it much. 2. I grew up close enough to Salem (Primitive? Missionary?) Baptist Church on Blooming Grove Road in Weakley County to play there in the cemetery all the time as a child. We would even sneak in a back window of the church to hold "services." I was as comfortable among the tombstones as I was in my living room. I would read the inscriptions and try to imagine their lives. The dedication stone I believe said "Stephen Pate 1844" and that sure seemed like a long time ago to me back around 1960. Still seems like a long time ago now. I always felt really bad for the graves that just had piles of sandstone on them because no one would ever remember who they were. Cemetery hopping became a pastime that I shared with my father and we spent many good times driving the old country roads around Henry and Weakley Counties searching for this grave or that. My dad could remember who a lot of them were and would point out the more gruesome deaths, like the accidents or the suicides or the murders. I guess that's what stood out in his mind when he was young. This past fall I got a call from my grandson in Illinois saying that his teacher had assigned the class to tell where their ancestors had come from and why they came to America. Then they had to find out about the native dress, diet, etc. of these folks. When he asked me where his ancestors came from I was a little surprised and said, "Which ones?" It sort of bothered me that the teacher didn't understand that each one of those children had hundreds of grandparents. On his dad's side of the family, I could go back far enough on one line to tell him when they came to America and why. They actually were Quakers who settled in New Jersey and were very well documented in the Minutes of the church. I'm not able to participate in the daily life of my grandson, so I was really happy that he called me to help him with homework and he was really proud to be able to report exactly when, where and why one set of grandparents came to America.
