    3. If someone doesn't know anything about this place, you might consider seeing if the Henry County library has a county history which might mention it and go into more detail on what its purpose might have been and when it actually took place. This is only a suggestion. 3. Keith, The Crockett home is not standing. The JDC Atkins home on Hudson Street is still there. It is a beautiful old home but I understand that some recent owners have destroyed some of the original interior in some renovation project. Also the Jackson Manor on highway 54 is of the same Atkins family. The home of JDC Atkins' father John is not there. We suspect it was near the Atkins Cemetery on that same property. The Manor was later built.and has been renovated and additions added over the years but still remains a well kept beautiful ante-bellum home. Joy Keith Pence wrote: >are the homes of Gov. 3. Mr Humphreys, I would like to see the "Porter House" photo and info you have. I am related to, but not a descendant of Gov. Porter's wife, Susan Dunlap Porter. I am a descendant of Mrs. Porter's Grandfather Hugh Dunlap, after whom Dunlap St. may be named... Any info on that? 1. Re: [TNHENRY] VOLUNTEERS CHARGE FEES
    2. I am a Volunteer and it is exactly what it means and then some. I do not charge for gas unless I travel to another town over 100 miles or so, I don't charge for just a few copies and what goes around comes around. Because I search for adoptees, foster siblings and birth parents most of the time, on occasion they appreciate it enough to send money. I put that towards the databases and all the things I do. One guy was so happy to get his divorce papers so quickly that he sent $100. What do I really get out of this? I get satisfaction that someone has found a loved one or have knocked down that brick wall they have been up against for years. My time is precious though so sometimes it may take me a month or two to get it done. But Volunteer is Volunteer!!!! Suzanne in Texas Searching CHERRY, MARTIN, RAY and COLE in Henry Co.

    3. I agree -- if they are listed as a "volunteer" they shouldn't ask for money unless they want to be reimbursed for copy fees or something of the like -- they should, however, state that upfront. I volunteer in my area, and the only time I ever charge is for copies. Wish I could help you, but I live in Northern Kentucky. You can try to email some of the local libraries in the area you are searching -- I've found great luck in doing such. I had one library in Michigan do all the research for me, and I didn't even have to pay for copies. 1. PAYING FOR VOLUNTEER'S SERVICES
    2. JOAN MORRIS
    3. Thanks everyone!! I really did not think a volunteer was supposed to ask for money..None has ever before..I guess I just got the wrong volunteer.. I sometimes go to different sources to find info, and some do charge for their services..but they tell you up front that there will be a fee & how much each service they do charges..I have no problem with that..I just assumed that anyone that was working on a website called Random Acts of Kindness was doing it strictly just to help people..not profit from it..Maybe, I am just looking at it the wrong way.. I know when I volunteer to do something, I would never dream of asking or expecting money for my services..I was just shocked when he emailed me back & ask me to send money to get the info..But, I need the info.....But for some strange reason, I get the feeling if I send the money..I will not receive the info anyway. Thanks for all your replies.. Joan Broach Morris

    3. Joan, Someone who list himself as a "volunteer" should not expect to be paid. There are, of course, professional genealogists who charge for their services. 3. I suppose it depends on what kind of "volunteer" he is. If he voluntarily offered his "professional" services, then he would expect a fee and he should mention it up front, though I would not pay him anything until he "had the goods", so to speak. If he's a real volunteer, then he should ask only for his costs for such things as copying, and in some cases, travel expenses. If he is a professional, you probably should research him, e.g., ask for references, perhaps from a group associated with the area, especially before you send anyone you don't know any significant amount of money. --- JOAN MORRIS <[email protected]> wrote: > Hello, Is it normal practice for volunteers to > charge fees for their work? I am happy to do look-ups in the Henry County Cemetary volumes and in the Bible Records and can do some census records look-ups for no charge. 1. Re: [TNHENRY] CORRECTION TO 1850 CENSUS
    2. Hi Joan, The Sturdivant change has been made. I knew it was wrong when I copied it, but I tried not to change anything from the original unless I had personal knowledge. I corrected Trevathan and Gallimore because I knew they were spelled incorrectly, but I left all the others as the census taker wrote them. There are some glaring errors, such as a woman named Elizabeth who was listed as a male and I left that in there also. It must be the purist in me. I think people should see that those censuses were not infallible. Very valuable indeed, but still not the Gospel Word. Thank you for your kind words about the census transcription. You are correct that it was difficult, but I cannot tell you how rewarding it has been to know that I have been able to help people who have an interest in genealogy, but don't have the time or the money to get to the source of the information. I have been helped immeasurably by the generosity of others so this is my way of passing it on. If you or anyone else would like to share something, no matter how small it might be, I would be happy to put on the pages with credit for the contribution or without if you choose. Even the tiniest thing could be what helps someone make the connection they have been looking for. Have a wonderful holiday, Peggy
