Sorry Mary, Heres the exact titles and publisher McEvoy Funeral Home Records 1901-1991 Turner Publishing Company Pudacah, Kentucky (the McEvoy book is VERY price if you buy it). Ridgeway Funeral 1946-1999 Does not list a publisher. It is a softcover, spiral bound genealogical publication. They are put together by volunteers, hence no publisher mentioned. This is an email addie for the author if its still good. Can anyone tell me if the two Funeral homes mentioned in these emails have records as far back as 1872. Thanks so much. Nona
Dear Mary, Ive had mine for a very long time but if I remember right, I think I bought them through Henry County Genealogical Society. They used to be listed with prices but I dont see them listed "for sale" any more. Just as resources. Heres the link. http://www.angelfire.com/tn2/henrycogensociety/ Theres an email addie at the bottom of the page also and you can ask them if they still sell them or where you can get a copy now. I purchased the McEvoy book as soon as it became available, as well as the book from Ridgeway. They have both been extremely helpful, however, here and there a few mistakes appear, but nothing that is impossible to get through. The first thing I did was to read each book from cover to cover and highlight names that were my family names - WEAKS, PIERCE, HOLIDAY, SNOW, HASTINGS, FINCH, JONES, to name a few. While reading the books, and for those of you who have the McEvoy Book, I found my great grandmother, Amanda German Hewgley JONES, and she is buried in Bethesda Cemetery in Paris...along with the majority of my family. I knew she was there, as I've visited the cemetery on many occasions, however, I found that she is listed in the book with the surname of GERMAN, which was her middle name. I went to the funeral home and asked for a copy of her burial records and noted that someone, for whatever reason, had crossed through her surname JONES. These things happen....we're only human, of course, but no one had an answer as to why this happened. I'm not issuing a complaint here. Both books are absolutely marvelous. However, I would suggest that sometimes there are minor mistakes that can cause one to wonder what happened to a family member. I spent the last two days filling out genealogy forms using the McEvoy book. I found this to be extremely helpful. For example, I found that one of my cousins married a WEBB.....so I'm also remotely connected to that particular family. I'm more than happy to do look-ups in either book. Virginia, This would be wonderful!! I look forward to your info. Once I receive it and if I can add anything to it, I will let you know. My great aunt, Evelyn Dora Finch is still alive and I visit her once a year. She was my grandfather, Everett's, twin sister. Once of my brick walls has been the FINCH and SNOW side. Dear Cousins, I'll bet most of you are to some degree or another Could someone who owns copies of the Ridgeway and McEvoy published records be so kind as to post information as to the exact published title and the name and address of the publisher? It would be a great help to those of us at some remove to obtain copies via Interlibrary Loan or purchase. Thanks Mary MCCALL Deane
I too am researching FINCH, PIERCE and SNOW. My grandfather was Everett Horton Finch. His parents were Stephen Horton Finch, born September 29, 1876 and died October 23, 1923; Dora Jimmy Gateley, born March 22, 1889 and died February 4, 1981. Dora's parents were James Henry Gateley born June 24, 1862 and died July 20, 1907 (story is he shot himself with a shotgun) and Savannah Alabama Pierce born June 22, 1865 and died June 29, 1909. Savannah's parents were Robert Pierce and Mary Snow. Unfortunately, I have no other info. Any connections? Dear list members, The Inman room has an online index to the Ridgeway Records, (link below). This was a very nice gesture by the volunteers since you would not want to spend the money for the book of your ancestors werent listed in the publication. http://www.angelfire.com/tn2/woinman/RIDGEWAY.rtf If your family is listed in the index, you can get in touch with the library and they will search and copy (for a reasonable fee) the record you want for you. http://www.angelfire.com/tn2/woinman/ p.s. Patience with the index, seems to take a while to load. As B.J. indicated, Im sure any of us with the publication would be glad to do a look up but please be sure your relative actually did DIE or is BURIED in the Henry area first so we arent on a wild goose chase for someone who isnt there. Since they are only listed by surnames without first names included in the index, it is often very time consuming. And if anyone has the year of death, please be sure to include it since it makes finding what you're searching for easy. Yes, Ridgeway is still in business. I seem to remember a list member with information about Ridgeway publications. The Rhea Library and Henry Co. Historical Society would be a good place to Start. Both have e-mail, but I don't have them. A google search may find that info. Slainte Math! (Great Health to you) B. J. None of those names appear in the McEvoy book between 1901 & 1991. Slainte Math! (Great Health to you) B. J. If you refer to the publication, they are in alphabetical order by year of death. There is an index, however, it only list the last name and pages where the name appears. There are many "Webb" names listed. No Urban. Be advised that Ridgeway's records are published also. Slainte Math! (Great Health to you) B. J. Joan, I suspect that in Henry County, the volunteer is getting the information from the funereal home books that have been compiled from those records. The local health departments have them only up to a certain year like maybe the last 10 or so years. They then send them to the Vital Statistics of the state. If I want an old birth certificate, I have always had to send for it in Nashville for the TN death certificate.or some other site that offers this service. I could be wrong but with all my years of researching in Henry County, I have never heard of getting a copy of an old one locally. The HANDY BOOK FOR GENEALOGISTS says, "Division of Vital Records, State Department of Health, 275 East Main St., Frankfort, KY 40601 , has birth and death records from the beginning of 1911. The City Health Department in some of the larger cities have still earlier records. Records of births and deaths from some counties as early as 1851 are in the library of the Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort, KY. 40601. " For Tennessee, the HANDY BOOK gives this information, "Official registration of births and deaths began in Tennessee in 1914. Official registration of marriages and divorces began in 1945. These records may be had from the Division of Vital Statistics, State Dept. of Public Health, Nashville, TN 37203. Check with the office of the City Health Dept. in the particular city in which your ancestors lived as you are ready to conduct the search." You may find some of the larger libraries have these records on microfilm. Write, or walk to the County Court House in the county where the person died. Unless the courthouse burned, which is not unusual, you should be able to find the certificates. Also, here in IL one may apply online to the IL archives and receive death certificates 1916 onward. Hope this helps.
