Re: History of "Beacon" newspaper Decatur CoTn and BARRY family Decatur County Herald newspaper, Decaturville, Decatur CoTn Friday, Sept. 16, 1921 Letter Lexington, Tennessee, Sept. 10, 1921 Decatur County Herald Please give me space in your columns to recall the fact that forty-one years ago today, the first number of the Decatur County Beacon was issued by my elder brother CHARLES D. BARRY, who died in PURDY in the fall of 1881. I went to Decaturville April 14th, 1881 and on that day was taught the boxes of the printer's cases by my brother FRANK G. BARRY, who died in JACKSON years ago. I am in my 64th year and have lived to see pass away perhaps every one of the then old citizens of Decaturville -- man and woman. Wishing the Herald long life and continued success, I am always respectfully and affectionately where Decaturville is concerned. W.V. BARRY Notes: W. V. Barry (William Valentine Barry) owner and editor of "The Lexington Progress" He was born 27 MAR 1858 in Purdy, McNairy County, TN.
