Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AgB.2ACE/17.1.3 Message Board Post: Rebecca, I have you "Ace" Asa Maness in my family line. He is the son of Frank Maness b. Nov 1874, d. 1921 buried at Central Grove Cem. Henderson co. and Liddie Woods b. Sept. 1888, d. 1969 also buried at Central Grove. Frank is the son of James Bullard "Jim" Maness b. April 1849 and Paralee Davis b. May 1857. Married abt. 1872. They had nine children that I know of. Jim is the son of Samuel M. "Stob Foot" Hays and Latisha "Tish" Maness. They were never married. They had six children. He was married to Malinda Pufford and had 7 children by her. Samuel M. Hays was the third son born to Samuel Ellet and Martha B. Davis. Samuel was known to everyone as "Stob Sam" or "Stob Foot Sam" or "Club Foot Sam." A difference in his foot structure when he was born is the reason behind his nickname. Some members of his family say both of his feet were affected. Legend has it he worked on a river boat in his early years. Somewhere in his travels, about 1836 or 1837, he met and married Malinda Pufford. They returned to Henderson County where he invested in a farm and became a farmer. By 1850, he had acquired many acres of land in the 16th district near or at a place that was later called Hays Town. He lived in this same area the remainder of his life, sharing his land with his children as they married and started families of their own. He served as Justice of the Peace in Henderson County during 1850 and performed marriages, one being that of his nephew Samuel L. Hays and Belinda P. Wood. Legends concerning this individual are so colorful and bountiful. One of these legends is that a posse, of which his brother Asa was a part, were tracking down Stob Sam for some alleged infraction and after they captured him were taking him back to town for hanging. It was lated when they had caught up with him, so they made a camp for the night. During the night Asa somehow added moisture to the posse's gunpowder and informed Sam to get on a horse and ride away. As Stob Sam was making his get-away, the posse tried to shoot him but their guns would not fire. Stob Sam made good his escape and laid low until his infraction was forgotten. Another version of the attempted hanging of Stob Sam is that as the posse had the rope around his neck and were about to whip the horse out from under him, his brother Asa rode up and held a gun on the posse, took the rope from Sam's neck, and with a warning that he would personally hang everyone of them if they ever tried it again, they ! both turned and rode away unharmed. (story from the book on the Hays Family by Lincoln & Freda Hays) Also Liddie Woods is the daughter of William Riley Woods and Martha Jane "Patsy" Hays. Patsy was the daughter of Stob Sam and Malinda Pufford. Yep, 1st cousins! Are you thoroughly confused yet???? I have lots more info on this Hays family that the Maness' and Wood families are connected to. Some very interesting stories. Please contact me direct at sshore2@bellsouth.net.
