Sybil Frances Mitchell MITCHELL Sybil Frances Mitchell, 84, of Brewton, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at her home in the Keego Community surrounded by her beloved family. She was born on March 4, 1922 in Brewton, Alabama to the late John Benjamin Wiggins and Thelma Mae Jernigan. Surviving her are four children: James Fred Mitchell, Jr. (Anne) of Foley, Alabama, Alfred Henry (Buddy) Mitchell (Dawn) of Montgomery, Alabama, Robert Douglas Mitchell of Brewton, Alabama, and Tanya Marie Mitchell of Fayetteville, Arkansas. She is survived by six grandsons: James Fred Mitchell, III (Joy) of Daphne, Alabama, Douglas Bolton Mitchell (Holly) of Auburn, Alabama, Jesse Benjamin Mitchell (Amanda) of Durham, North Carolina, Alfred Henry Mitchell, Jr. of Montgomery, Alabama, Jason Green Mitchell (Lisa) of Firestone, Colorado and Justin Mitchell Carte of Redwood City, California. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Constance Cary Mitchell, Olivia Brantley Mitchell, Emory Anne Mitch! ell, Thomas Jason Mitchell and John Patrick Mitchell. Also surviving is her brother, James Henry Hill (Mary) of Sumter, South Carolina. Preceding her in death were her beloved husband Colonel James Fred Mitchell, her grandson Cary Thomas Mitchell of Auburn, Alabama and her brother Billy Hill of Brewton, Alabama. After the early death of her father, Sybil was raised by her step-father, Rich Hill and mother Thelma Hill. Accordingly, growing up she was sometimes called Sybil Hill. She was educated in the public schools of Brewton, Alabama and was a 1940 graduate of T. R. Miller High School. On April 20, 1942 she married James Fred Mitchell, son of Jesse Robert and Sallie Grimsley Mitchell of Scotts Hill, Tennessee. Fred and Sybil Mitchell were married for 63 years until his passing in 2005. Sybil Mitchell was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Brewton where in 1934 she professed her faith in Christ. She was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class and the Juani! ta Johnson Circle. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Meadorwood Garden Club and past president of the Brewton Civic League. In 1975 she was chairman of the Brewton Area Cancer Crusade. She has worked with the Boy Scouts and has served on the Gulf States Girl Scout Council. For over forty years she served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross both in Europe and with the Escambia County Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross. In 1980 she became Vice-Co-Chairman of the American Red Cross for the State of Alabama. During the military career of her husband she was active in the Officers Wives Clubs both in the United States and Europe. She was named Woman of the Year in 1980 by the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce. In announcing the award, Brewton City Councilman Bryars Byrd said "Mrs. Mitchell embodies everything that a woman can and should stand for. She has been a loyal helpmate to her husband, a mother to her own four children and to numerous foster children. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 9, 2007 from 5-7 p! .m. at the First Baptist Church in Brewton, Alabama. A Service of Celebration and Remembrance of the Life of Sybil Frances Mitchell will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Brewton First Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack Fitts officiating. Internment will follow at Union Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Funeral Home directing. The family can be contacted at P.O. Box 654, Brewton, Alabama, 36427.
