    1. [TNHENDER] Re: Jones Cemetery
    2. David Donahue
    3. As a cemetery where Myracles are buried, Jones Cemetery was one of the first cemeteries I visited beyond the Middleburg and Darden communities. The Jones Cemetery record, made in 1992, is now about the oldest of the resurveyed records on the Henderson County Cemeteries web page. Last December I checked the typed 1992 record against the markers and recorded new markers, planning to update the Jones Cemetery information and convert the cemetery data to the newer format. I have been looking for these notes for the past week. After sorting through and filing about 8 inches of cemetery notes while looking for missing cemeteries, I have come to the conclusion that I have lost a binder with 4 or 5 cemeteries recorded in December, including Jones. While my father is well enough to go along on short cemetery visits, I will not be able to spend the time needed to redo Jones Cemetery. Would someone be willing to check and update the Jones Cemetery record? To check and update I generally print out the older record and punch it to go in a 1/2-inch wide 3-ring binder. I check off each marker as I find it, noting corrections and needed changes if any. I write the information for new markers on the blank backs of the pages. It took me about 8-9 hours split between two trips to check the markers and update the information for Jones Cemetery. It would take about 2 hours solely to update the information from 1992 to 2002 without rechecking older material. David

Pleasant Hill is the second or third largest cemetery in Henderson County. I will know which once I find and type up my misplaced notes for updating of Jones Cemetery.

    3. Let me just add my deep appreciation, David, for all the work you have done for others to benefit from. I have been to your site dozens of times and found many areas of interest to help piece together the who, what, where, when, and why of my SMALL ancestors in Henderson County. Thanks again! ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Donahue" <ddonahue@netease.net> To: <TNHENDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 26, 2002 6:35 PM Subject: [TNHENDER] Pleasant Hill Cemetery http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/henderson/pl-hill.htm This is a December 2001 resurvey conducted as an update of the 1976 record by Bobbie Pierce and Zonia Harper. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AgB.2ACE/134.1 Message Board Post: Luray was founded in 1889 as a stop on the Tennessee Midland Railroad. The primary factor in the stop's location was the availability of an artesian spring (http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/he-stuff/luraysp.htm). The community is maybe 3 dozen houses, 2 or 3 churches, a grocery, a gas station, and several empty store fronts. Luray post office still exists but it now serves much of southwestern Henderson County including the Huron and Middlefork communities. Students from the community now attend Westover School in the Juno Community. Before school consolidation, white students in the community attended Russells Crossroads. Black students attended Luray School (http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/school/luray34.htm). >From the 1940-41 school history (http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/he-stuff/school.htm): RUSSELLS CROSS ROADS COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL Eutah was given the name Luray after the railroad was built 53 years ago by the railroad people. The first settler was a Mr. Ried, who located here to have water power to run his flour mill. The oldest house standing is 120 years old and is owned and occupied by Mr. Feek Adcock. The Methodist Church is the oldest church and is still used. The Missionary Baptist and The Church of Christ are the other two churches here now. West Bain owned and operated the first store in Luray. Now, V. A. McNatt, W. A. Webb, Walter Wilkens and G. L. McHaney, have stores here. G. W. Priddy was the first postmaster and Jim Greer (colored) was the first mail carrier. The name Russells was given the school because Mr. Tom Russell lived near the school for sixty-two years. The name Cross Roads was used because of the location of the school. The first school building was built about one hundred years ago. The second building was built fifty one years ago. The third building was built August, 1923. The first teachers names were: Lawson Hedgecoth and Doss. The present teachers are J. A. Lipscomb and Mrs. Mary Nelle Outlaw. The average number of pupils is 46. The present building is 48 x 40 with four rooms, one lunch room and one coat room and is located 1.6 mile northwest of Luray in Second Civil District of Henderson County.

    3. I have just uploaded the 1950 senior class pictures for Montgomery High School http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/mont/m50-05.htm Also new is an update of Hare Cemetery http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/henderson/hare.htm These are my first uploads since April. For those who wondered if I fell off the face of the earth, I am still here. I have become full-time care giver for my elderly father since his strokes in April and I either have not had time to make web pages or have too tired physically or mentally to make them. I had hoped to have two more print-your-own-copy cemetery volumes ready by this summer but I still needed to revisit about four cemeteries when dad had his stroke. I will be adding updates of cemeteries I did visit in April. For anyone interested, I will load an update of Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Decatur County tomorrow.
