3. MANESS, Thomas F. ("Tommy"); C.S.A. No further identification. Returned here to rear a family. A grandson, John Maness, now of Jackson, is well known here. Another grandson, Jess, now a retired T.V.A. employee of Sheffield, Ala., constructed a small airplane in nearby Decaturville in the 1930's that was the talk of the town! Improvised from materials at hand and obtainable locally, the engine was that of a Model A Ford. The machine flew perfectly; though Jess hit a few slumps in landing on farmlands, he did all repairs and soon had it flying again. When his machine was heard coming, during school, some boy would start yelling, "Jess Maness; Jess Maness'' and despite efforts to hold them in class, almost the whole school would rush out to see Jess pass over (I know, I was Principal). Jess would do a little stunting for us but when we saw steam coming from the engine radiator, we knew he would soon come down. Some government official was called in to put a stop to Jess and his flying machine. But Jess out-talked him! The man asked permission to fly it and after quite a little flight, landed to pronounce the machine the smoothest-flying he had ever tried out. Jess Kept flying! This is my ancestor - his middle initial is not F. - it is J. Does anyone have any information farther back on Thomas Jeptha Maness? Ola Horton Cates (named after grandmother Ola V. Maness) ----- Original Message ----- From: <EAdams2784@aol.com> To: <TNHENDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 9:00 PM Subject: Re: [TNHENDER] question > Click on the highlighted site for the History of Scotts Hill. > > gt-ti l > > ----------------------------- > See home page at: > http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~adams1895 > > > ==== TNHENDER Mailing List ==== > To unsubscribe send the message unsubscribe to > TNHENDER-l-request@rootsweb.com > > >

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AgB.2ACE/17.1.3 Message Board Post: Rebecca, I have you "Ace" Asa Maness in my family line. He is the son of Frank Maness b. Nov 1874, d. 1921 buried at Central Grove Cem. Henderson co. and Liddie Woods b. Sept. 1888, d. 1969 also buried at Central Grove. Frank is the son of James Bullard "Jim" Maness b. April 1849 and Paralee Davis b. May 1857. Married abt. 1872. They had nine children that I know of. Jim is the son of Samuel M. "Stob Foot" Hays and Latisha "Tish" Maness. They were never married. They had six children. He was married to Malinda Pufford and had 7 children by her. Samuel M. Hays was the third son born to Samuel Ellet and Martha B. Davis. Samuel was known to everyone as "Stob Sam" or "Stob Foot Sam" or "Club Foot Sam." A difference in his foot structure when he was born is the reason behind his nickname. Some members of his family say both of his feet were affected. Legend has it he worked on a river boat in his early years. Somewhere in his travels, about 1836 or 1837, he met and married Malinda Pufford. They returned to Henderson County where he invested in a farm and became a farmer. By 1850, he had acquired many acres of land in the 16th district near or at a place that was later called Hays Town. He lived in this same area the remainder of his life, sharing his land with his children as they married and started families of their own. He served as Justice of the Peace in Henderson County during 1850 and performed marriages, one being that of his nephew Samuel L. Hays and Belinda P. Wood. Legends concerning this individual are so colorful and bountiful. One of these legends is that a posse, of which his brother Asa was a part, were tracking down Stob Sam for some alleged infraction and after they captured him were taking him back to town for hanging. It was lated when they had caught up with him, so they made a camp for the night. During the night Asa somehow added moisture to the posse's gunpowder and informed Sam to get on a horse and ride away. As Stob Sam was making his get-away, the posse tried to shoot him but their guns would not fire. Stob Sam made good his escape and laid low until his infraction was forgotten. Another version of the attempted hanging of Stob Sam is that as the posse had the rope around his neck and were about to whip the horse out from under him, his brother Asa rode up and held a gun on the posse, took the rope from Sam's neck, and with a warning that he would personally hang everyone of them if they ever tried it again, they ! both turned and rode away unharmed. (story from the book on the Hays Family by Lincoln & Freda Hays) Also Liddie Woods is the daughter of William Riley Woods and Martha Jane "Patsy" Hays. Patsy was the daughter of Stob Sam and Malinda Pufford. Yep, 1st cousins! Are you thoroughly confused yet???? I have lots more info on this Hays family that the Maness' and Wood families are connected to. Some very interesting stories. Please contact me direct at sshore2@bellsouth.net.

    1. [TNHENDER] Wagon train from Tenn to Ark
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Woods,Derryberry,Hayes Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AgB.2ACE/160 Message Board Post: I would like to know if anyone else can tell me about a wagon train that left Henderson County Tennessee in 1875 to go to Arkansas. Mr. Guy Derryberry was very nice to mention it in his letter to me last week. I have no access to Henderson county records so can't check on the marriage of an H. C. Woods to a Caroline Britt? I remember seeing on a census -I believe it was the 1880 census Caroline Britt with a son William Pinkney Britt and a son H.C. Woods. The H. C. Woods is my husbands great-grandfather. Caroline and the children later moved to Stone County Arkansas, where Caroline married a Derryberry. I was told that she either left the father of H.C. Woods or divorced him and went back to her Britt name, and that is why she was listed on the census in 1880 as a Britt. Mr. Derryberry believes that the H.C. Woods that is buried in Bible Grove cemetery may be my H.C. Woods. The name is believed to actually be Henry Clay Woods. One bible reference has it as Henry (Newt) Woods.! But the Henry name and the Clay name have been passed down in the family. He later married an Eliza E 1861-1935. If I knew if they were married after 1874 then it could definately be a possibility. Caroline was not married to the Derryberry very long either. She then married a William Bangs. All of this has made it very hard for me to track. I am desparately seeking someone with access to the old marriage records to find a records of this marriage so I know if I have the right line. My husband passed away in November. I would love to get that side of the family done for my son. I truly believe after reading the letter I received from Mr. Derryberry that I have the right Woods family. He mentioned that there were several Woods, Derryberry's, Manesses and Hayes on the wagon train. My husbands granmother on his maternal side was a Hayes. Anyone knowing any old stories on this wagon train or about this Woods family please contact me at awoods@cox-internet.com. Thank You.

    3. Earlier in the day I wrote "Frank Maness and Liddie Woods were second cousins." I was not paying attention and wrote this because each is in the 4th generation of the Hays family. However, both are on the same 2nd generation branch of the family, having the same grandfather. Thus they were first cousins. First cousin marriages were very common in this Hays family in the nineteenth century. David

    3. Information has been collected and provided to me by many researchers on various families in the Henderson County and Carroll County areas. A special thanks is extended to Bobbie Pierce of Henderson County. She gave me the inspiration that I needed to put all this together. It has been a lot of work but a lot of fun. I have various families on the web called www.the-watchers.com. But through the courtesy of Rootsweb, my complete data base is hosted on Rootsweb. I update it every few weeks. It provides the links between various families. For those that are interested, you can go directly to it by clicking on the following link. As I stated earlier, most of this information has been provided by others and needs to be verified. But it is a good place to start. It has been interesting to learn how I am related to myself. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=watchers&I11.x=24&I11.y= 4 Jerry T.
