Re: Clifford L. Duke Just a thought. Maybe reason can't find obituary, he didn't die in Henderson Co. TN or even TN? Since he died working for TVA, he may have died another state? Many states were involved with TVA project.
not sure. Can somebody help me out on that? I am hoping since there was an autopsy done maybe I can find some old medical records. That brings up another question. Does anyone know if the old, old medical records are available from Dr. Huntsman's old practice also Dr. Conger's hospital? Oh thank you Charlie! All I have now is what I can remember of my grandmother telling me of what happened, and she passed away in 1985. I remembered something about a truck, and a skull fracture or something like it. I also remember my grandmother telling me about Newt, I just never knew who he was. I know they called my great-grandfather "Uncle Tom" and "Aunt Mary" (Cozart). Tell your mother thank you very much, I am Elveta's daughter, Maudie and Clifford's youngest daughter's daughter. I was adopted into the family as an infant. My mother, Jewell Elveta Duke Austin, passed in 2000, and my father, Charles, passed in 1993, so my faint remembrances are all I have. The rest of the family is pretty distant although I live fairly close to them all, I am not close to any of them really and haven't really had much contact in about five or six years, except at funerals. The bad thing is that not many of them have any interest in the geneology, and I basically have more info, they call when they want to know about something, and I am the one adopted in! If you know of anyone needing info on the Dukes or Newsoms (Maudie's line) let me know, I have a ton of info and lots and lots of old pictures since I got all my grandmother's old pictures in addition to my mothers. Nice to meet you (through cyberspace) cousin! Renee, Clifford Duke was my first cousin once removed. I can not help you with an obit but my mother, his first cousin was 25 yrs. old when he died. He was working with the TVA and riding in the back of a truck with a top on it when the truck hit a bump so hard that it threw Clifford up against the steel beams in the top of the cover. he struck his hesd on the beams causing a blood clot on his brain. this caused his death and was cofirmed by an autopsy paid for by his Uncle, James Newton Duke nicknamed "Newt" who was a brother to Clifford's father,John Thomas "Tom" Duke. This information comes from my mother, Odell Duke Brewer who is now 94 yrs.old. Hello, I am interested in finding out more information on my great uncle, Samuel A. Haskins and his family. I have recently discovered that he spent some time in Henderson County, TN. In some estate records found in Bedford County, TN, I found that he signed a land deed in Henderson County, TN in 1896. There are two listings for "a" S. A. Haskins as a bondsman in 1897 http://www.tngenweb.org/henderson/mbond3.prn Today I found the following website: http://www.tnyesterday.com/yesterday_henderson/mcpk-fun.htm - which includes a photo by "S. A. Haskins Photographer and Maker of Shell Jewelry, Lexington, Tennessee." I wonder if this could be my Samuel A. Haskins and if there is other known photos by him? In the 1900 Census of Collin County, TX, Samuels occupation is listed as a photographer. By 1910, he and his family were in Shelby County, TN. He died there on January 16, 1913. Other details that I know: 1856 - Samuel A. Haskins, born May 24, 1856, Bedford County, TN. He was the ninth of ten children born to Benjamin Alfred and Priscilla Lamb Haskins. 1860 Census Samuel is listed in his fathers household, age 4, District 18, Bedford County, TN 1870 Census - Samuel is listed in his fathers household, age 15, District 18, Bedford County, TN 1880 Census - Samuel is listed in his fathers household, age 24, District 18, Bedford County, TN 1884-1885 (about) Samuel marries Georgia Annie Unknown (b. January 1860), location unknown. Marriage record is not found in Bedford County, TN. 1896 - Samuel A. Haskins signed a land deed in Henderson County, TN. 1897 - S. A. Haskins is listed as a Bondsman in Henderson County, TN. 1900 census - finds this family in Justice Precinct 8, Collin County, Texas Haskins, Samuel A., Head, age 44, b. May 1856 Tennessee Haskins Georgia A., Wife, age 40, b. January 1860 Tennessee Haskins, Sarah E., Daughter, age 14, b. February 1886 Tennessee Haskins, Willie M., Son, b. October 1887 Tennessee Haskins, Nannie Lee, Daughter, age 10, b. February 1890 Tennessee Haskins, Henry Ozro, Son, age 8, b. October 1891 Tennessee 1910 census - Binghamton, Shelby County, TN Howard Avenue Haskins, Samuel A., Head, age 54, b. Tennessee (one marriage 26 years) Haskins Georgia A., Wife, age 50, b. Tennessee (one marriage 26 years) Haskins, Sarah E., Daughter, age 24, b. Tennessee (single) 1913 - Samuel A. Haskins died on January 16, 1913, Binghamton, Shelby County, TN. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, TN. 1920 Census - Binghamton, Shelby County, TN Haskins Georgia A., Head, age 59, b. Tennessee, widow Haskins, Nannie, Daughter, age 30, b. Tennessee, (widow ? ) Haskins, Freddie, Grandson, age 3 ?, b. Oklahoma (single) For Freddie Haskins, it states his mothers place of birth is Alabama, so this is either a mistake by the census taker or it leads me to believe that he is the son of either Willie M. or Henry Orzo Haskins (Georgias sons), or another unidentified child of Samuel and Georgia. 1930 Census Part of Civil District 4, Shelby County, TN Kallahem? Avenue Haskins, Annie, Head, age 69, born TN, widow Haskins, Nannie L., Daughter, age 39, born TN, widow 1933 City Guide - Shelby County, TN - Georgia Haskins is listed 1940-44 ? City Guide, Shelby County, TN - Georgia Haskins is listed. (I have lost this exact data from the Memphis City Guides due to a computer crash, so I uncertain of the last year I was able to find her). Aft. 1940 - Georgia Annie Unknown dies, burial place unknown. I have a letter from daughter Nannie when her father died in 1913 (to my great grandfather who was a brother to Samuel) and it says, we are married now (refers to her siblings but does not call them by name). I am planning a research trip next week and because of my recent discoveries, will stop by Lexington on my way to Memphis. Any help greatly appreciated! Tried most of the options you gave....my father worked for the Progress for years and years, there isn't anything. We had checked years ago when I used to sit with him at work. I haven't tried Paffords....I know there wasn't a funeral home used, you know they used to have visitation at home and church but someone probably prepared the body. However, it may have been a family member, because several of that generation were just groomed and buried that I know of. If you are looking for the Pafford website, it is www.paffordfuneralhome.com I check obits there quite a bit, it is really helpful. I wish Reed's had something online. Thanks for all the suggestions! There was no obituary in "Crossing the Dark River", deaths of Henderson Co. area residents, for Clifford L. Duke. The death certificate of Clifford L. Duke should tell you the cause of death. I am seeking information (really wish for an obit) on my grandfather Clifford L. Duke, buried in Corinth Cemetery, date of death 6-6-1936. He was the husband of Maudie Lee Newsom Duke. I know that it was an accident, my mother was 5 when he died and what I recall is that he was in the back end of a truck or something similar and was in an accident and had a skull fracture. I can't find an obit or any further info. Any info would be helpful. Only two of his children are left, they were small when he passed away and don't remember details either. I've combed the library but couldn't find anything. Thanks! Renee
Check out the history of Corinth Church, start there, and I will look up what I have.
