    2. FYI, new look coming to Tennessee State Library website. Look for the revised TSLA web site to launch on May 17, 2005. There's a new look coming to the web site of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. We will soon be unveiling a redesigned web site for our users. Some of the main characteristics of the newly designed web site: *A simplified URL, making the TSLA web address easier to remember. *A consistent format, with an appearance designed to maximize accessibility and ease of use. *An organization arranged by subject content, rather than by TSLA departments. *A set of common features on all of the pages -- links to contact information, a link to the TSLA online catalog, a site map, and a box to search the TSLA web site.   The redesigned TSLA site will have some new features, including: *A State Historian's page. *A rotating TSLA slide show, showcasing our photographic collection. *Downloadable forms for ordering materials and services. *A"How do I find?" button, with answers to the most frequently asked questions received by Public Services. *Expansion of the section on Government Documents, both state and national. *Key links to the Tennessee Blue Book and the Tennessee Encyclopedia, as well as a page of links to other sites, all of them government, professional associations, or non-profit sites.   -- Edwin S. 3. http://www.tnyesterday.com/ Hello, I wanted to say that my ancestors are listed at the above website. If you go to this website, and in the search box type MARTIN, then when the results come back, go to: Item #51: Freemasons Deaths 1848-1935 W. M. Martin died 9-26-1870 (Lexington, Henderson Co TN) Item# 74: Settlement of Insolvent Estates, 1867-1896 73-76 Thomas S. Lyles, deceased. B. J. Young and Liver P. White, admistraors. 8-21-1873. This is Barzilla J. Young b. 1815 NC, the brother in law of W. M. Martin b. 1826 NC. 235-236 George Martin, deceased. J. R. Wilkins admistrator, 5-30-1885. This George Martin 'might' be related to my ancestor, as my ancestor W. M. Martin did name his first child George Wesley Martin. This George Wesley Martin married Martha Virginia Cunningham at Lexington, TN, I believe she is the grandaughter of Ranson Cunningham of Henderson Co TN, one of the ealiest settlers there. Item #82. Mary M. Martin b. 1825 NC, who was formerly Mary M. Young, was the widow of William M. Martin who died 1870. In this item she is selling some land. Mary M. Martin and some of her children left to settle in Navarro Co TX as of 1878. Children: William B. Martin, Isabella Martin, Druzilla Martin, George Wesley Martin, Joseph A. Martin (my ancestor), Bailey Martin, Mary Caroline Martin, H. E. Martin (female), Ransom/Samson Martin, I believe the Young and Martin families came from Rockingham Co NC prior to settling at Henderson Co TN. There is a James Nathaniel Martin b. 1835 NC, he probably was a nephew to W. M. Martin, this James N. Martin probably fought in the Civil War in Henderson Co TN, probably fought on the Union side, since Henderson voted to stay Union. This James N. Martin also went to Navarro Co TX with the Mary Martin families. I would love to meet anyone who is interested in these Martin names of Henderson Co TN 1853 thru 1878. Best regards, Lilly Martin d/o Joe, s/o Joe, s/o Joe, s/o William M. Martin b. 1826 NC.

    2. re: African American research Henderson Co TN, Harrison Fuller lynched Lexington Tennessee January 8 1896 SOURCE: index of some lynchings on website of Institute for the Study of Race Relations http://150.174.33.57/isrr/index.html Additionally, I ran across a Harrison Fuller on some tax records of Chester Co. TN. I believe tax records were for 1890's. I don't know if it is the same man who was lynched. I was researching one of my Fuller cousins, formerly from old Lone Elm area in Henderson Co. TN in the same Chester Co. TN tax records and that's when I saw the name Harrison Fuller. Out of curiosity, I searched on ancestry.com and found a Harrison Fuller born abt 1866 with source of birth being 1870 census, TN, city, Henderson. I am not a member of ancestry.com so I was only able to view limited information. It has to be Henderson Co. TN for location since the portion of Henderson Co. TN given to form Chester Co. was given later than 1870. Hope this helps those of you researching African Americans. Linda

    1. GOFF/GAWF/GAUF DNA Study
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: GOFF, GAWF, GAUF Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AgB.2ACE/254 Message Board Post: In the 1830 census of Henderson County TN we find three GOFFS. • Lewis R. Goff (7/18/1811—4/18/1894) married Miranda Kelly (4/3/1823---5/23/1900) • James Henry Goff (1809--- after 1850) married Sarah Long (1814---after 1860) • Edmund S. Gawf (1794---1883) married Jane ‘Jennie” Long (1796---1880) Stories are told that each GOFF was an orphan named BARR or BARLOW, reared by a family of GOFFS and took the name GOFF. Other stories say they were brothers. Thirty years of research has not found material to confirm or refute these stories. We believe that DNA testing can answer some of these questions and have DNA testing of descendants in process and need more volunteers. If you are a direct male to male descendant in unbroken line of any of these GOFFS and want to participate in these tests, please contact James Ed Goff (egoff1922@chartertn.net) or Maureen Pierce (Mep516@aol.com).

    1. Lovelace family
    2. Alan E Finch
    3. I asked about this Lovelace family plot a couple of years ago. I had one answer saying they could not find any thing on it. I have documents showing that Thomas Lovelace,Jr. (1776-1851) is buried in the Family Cemetary in Henderson Co., Tenn. His wife Nancy Collin Lovelace may be buried there as well. It is possible that this may be on private land and not part of another cemetary. Alan in Lexington, Ky.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: DUKE, RENSHAW, JOHNSON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AgB.2ACE/238.1.1 Message Board Post: Mary, I have basically the same info you had regarding Neil Madison Duke (aka Cornelius, although I'm not sure where that came from). Instead of having his father as "James" Benson Duke, I have "John" (Jack) Benson Duke (1832-1924) and Julia Sullivan (1st wife, 1832-1899) as Neal's parents. I'd be open to any documents, etc that explain him as "James" vs "John". These are not my direct ancestors, but am following the Duke family with interest, in an attempt to identify/prove my 2nd & 3rd Great-grandparents (Duke). I believe this family of Dukes are related to mine. (See more below). I'm showing John Benson Duke as s/o Gideon Duke (1793-1875) and Sarah Elizabeth Long. It's my understanding that this Gideon was s/o Epps Duke and Mary Williams. You mentioned you had additional info in your Duke file, and I'm interested in another son of Epps & Mary, named WILLIAM B. DUKE (b. bet 1791-1800 GA and m. to Nancy Johnson). This William would have been a brother to Gideon (b. 1793). Do you or anyone have a JEFFERSON GIDEON DUKE (b. abt 1821) who is supposedly the 1st son of William & Nancy? I'm tracking him as the possible father to my Tennessee Jane Duke (b. 1843), who m. John W. RENSHAW abt 1860. His first wife's name may have been Mary (MNU), but could have had other wives. Tennessee Jane may have had a younger brother, Thomas Duke, b. abt 1849). Other children I have for William B. Duke & Nancy Johnson besides Jefferson Gideon are: Mary Ann (1822); Benjamin C. (1822, m. Elizabeth A. Godwin); Dau (b. abt 1823); Matilda Emaline (1827, m. Josiah D. Emerson); James R. (abt 1834); David (1834, m. Louisa A. Duke); Mordecai (1836, m. Elizabeth C.); Newton Jefferson (1838), Martha Ann (1840); George (1842); Thomas (1843); Andrew (1844); and William D. (1845). (These names are from various sources, including census). Any info or clarification on any of the above is most appreciated. I'm still gathering pieces, and anything could help. Pat LaBrot
