Need Help All Over!!! I am seeking corroborative evidence, from anytime prior to 1870 that my GGF-WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTHE and SCOTT ALLEN FORSYTHE are related to FORSYTH(E)'s in McNairy County, TENN. Or related to recorded FORSYTH(e)s anywhere else in the World!!!! I am open to any possibilities. Most search efforts have been in West Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Northwest Mississippi, Eastern Arkansas, and Missouri bootheel. More remote search efforts include the Carolinas, Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio New York, Scotland, Ireland, etc. etc etc. WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTH(E) (1846-1913) first appears in Lauderdale County, TENN 1870 census, where a (later) 1907 birth record states WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTHE was from McNairy County, TENN. In this Lauderdale County, TENN 1870 census, he was located at Hales Point, on the Mississippi River. Listed occupation was "Rafting." Oldest in that household was "Pamelia" a 52 yr old female. Have no other known information on father of William Stanton Forsyth. William Stanton Forsyth bought 640 acres (1873) at Hales Point, married, operated store, cotton gin, cut timber, reared large family there until death at mature age. A 1907 county birth record for his last child cited William Stanton Forsyth's birthplace as McNairy County, Tennessee. Much research in McNairy County, Tennessee has turned up no credible links among the Forsyth(e) families that are well documented there. Because of the 1870 census "rafting" and "boating" occupations cited in that household, we surmise that these occupants may have journeyed from anywhere to Hales Point, TN: from the southeastern states, the northern states or from overseas to West Tennessee via Mississippi/Ohio Rivers. (Suspect the entry in the 1870 census record stating William Stanton Forsyth's birthplace as TN might be bogus info.) There is no definite record (census, deed, wills, county court minutes, birth/death records, military, etc., etc.) visible yet in the USA at this time that predates this 1870 find, although there are some items that theoretically could connect. The full 1870 Lauderdale County TENN census for this starting point household (located at Hales Point on the Mississippi River about 55 miles north of Memphis....) was: S.?(or I or J) FORSYTHE 32 Male Boating [nothing further known] --> Note: "SANDY" FORSYTHE, 21, laborer, from 1860 census in BENJ. ISHAM FORSYTHE is also found in the 1830 and 1840 censuses in McNairy County. An 1858 McNairy Court petition of Isham G. FORSYTHE's widow, CATHERINE FORSYTHE, named her and his survivors (6 of whom were under 21): JAMES FORSYTHE WILLIAM FORSYTHE {maybe Wm. Stanton FORSYTHE in 1870 Laud. JASPER MATLOCK, 7 " " " *************************************************************** The McNairy County TENN 1850 index shows other FORSYTH(E) households in addition to the ISHAM G. FORSYTHE's household, in dwelling 279-42: JAMES FORSYTHE, 26 KY, unk (-->Son of Isham G. Forsythe per 1858 Petition) MARY FORSYTHE, 22 INDIANA (MISSOURI) FORSYTHE, 3 (mentioned in 1880 Will of James Forsythe) --> I.M. FORSYTHE married JAMES A. HUGHES 12/12/1862 (WINFIELD) SCOTT FORSYTHE, 2 (mentioned in 1880 Will of James Forsythe) (no name female) FORSYTHE, 3 mo. PHILLIP HOLLIDAY, 33 (Who is this??) and in dwelling 266-40: JAMES FORSYTHE, 42 KY, T (brother of Isham?) WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTHE, had a son named GROVER FORSYTHE who was a lifelong resident of Lauderdale County TENN, and is buried (1932) at Edith Cemetery in Lauderdale County TENN. Had this been the same GROVER FORSYTHE, and BERT FORSYTHE is connected to ISHAM G. FORSYTHE then some degree of closure was possible. But alas, if you're buried in 1932 in Lauderdale, you're not around in 1946 in McNairy. ************************************************************** There is too much potential info in these households to have been at this 12+ year long dead end. Thank you in advance for any Help! Sterling Forsythe (and etal)

News Clip from >From http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/9475/edith.html 1863, Stones River Battlefield. After one days fighting James B. Mitchell of the 34th Alabama Regiment of Infantry noted the grim aftermath of battle in his journal: "There was a great deal of pilfering performed on the dead bodies of the Yankees by our men. Some of them [Federals] were left as naked as the day they were born, everything in the world the had being taken from them. I ordered my men to take their fine guns and canteens if they wished, but nothing else. The only think I took was fine canteen which I cut off a dead Yankee who was lying on his face in our path as we marched along. Thomas Jefferson Walker, a Haywood County native and member of Company C of the 9th Tennessee Infantry left this horrifying anecdote about the Battle of Stones River: While we were lying in the rear of our first line of battle, a soldier was shot, and in his death struggle it sounded just like the death squeal of a hog that had been struck in the head with an ax! Our whole line burst out into a great roar of laughter, although men were being shot and killed every few moments in our own ranks!"
Received one hit on a burial, thanks for the input. Think my HOBOCK people were hiding in "them thar hills" and for the most part still are. Have been looking for their origins throughout the state. My grandfather George Paul HOBOCK was b.19 Dec 1864 in TN, but have been unable to locate him in the 1870 Census. Of course, I don't know his parents name which adds to the quest. BTY I liked you site, good job, wish I had that kind of talent! Does anyone have any information on Lowry's Landing. Apparently it was one of 3/4 landings when the river boats first came in 1825 (or so). We are told that Riley LOWREY was born in Brownsville (Haywood Cnty) in 1826. His father may have been Joseph LOWREY. Riley married twice and my husband's grandfather Joseph Riley LOWREY was born March 6, 1870 in Brownsville. Is there any connection between this "Lowry's Landing" and Chief George Lowry of the Cherokee nation? anything you have (or might have) would be great to know. Thanks. mary LOWREY mel1@cdc.gov

I have visited Rawls Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN on several occassions. I have found that Mr. Bill Rawls is very helpful. They have records from about 1933 to present day for Haywod, Gibson counties. They were the single funeral homer serving the African American community at that time. I am not sure where Mason TN is, but there is also another funeral home in Madison County, Stephensen-Shaw Funeral Home. They too, have many records dating from the 1950's. Both funeral homes have been willing to let me research their records. Ivy Anderson
The book that Anne Condran referred to gives abstracts of deeds to properties that were in the area of Haywood County that became a part of Crockett county when it became a county in 1872. It is a great book. I have a copy, I think I bought the last one they had several years ago, and we have a copy in our library in Brownsville. It is an excellent reference. Reese Moses
Anne Condran found this book at Fort Wayne, IN and shares this with the list. She inadvertently posted the message to tnhaywoo-l-request@rootsweb.com. THAT ADDRESS IS FOR SUBSCRIBE AND UNSUBSCRIBE ONLY. USE THIS ADDRESS TNhaywoo-L@rootsweb.com for posting messages to the list. (gee, I hope I have that right). signed, your off the wall host, Jane I found an excellent resource titled Crockett (Haywood) County Tennessee Deeds 1785-1872 by Miss Maxine Mayo, published in 1983. Others searching Haywood county deeds will probably find it valuable. It probably can be obtained by interlibrary loan. It contains a detailed description of the person selling the land, person buying the land, description of the land and references the book number and page number to the Haywood County deeds.
BURGESS Looking for parents of John BURGESS and Nancy JOHNSTON. That is as far back as I can go. John and Nancy had 19 children. 8 are unknown. After John and Nancy lived in Rutherford Co. TN, the family moved to Haywood Co. TN during the 1850's and 60's, then to Franklin Co. IL from 1870's. My GG Grandmother Sarah Frances "Fannie" Burgess was born in 1854 in Rutherford Co. TN. Does anyone have the 1860 Census for Ruterford and Haywood Counties?? Thanks in advance for any help. Lynn
