I have an ancestor William Lawrence, who showed up in the 1880 Census in Carter Co., TN with the occupation of "U.S. Storekeeper." This guy was born in Ireland, so I thought he might have said that in the U.S., he was a storekeeper. William LAWRENCE Self M Male W 39 IRELAND U.S. Storekeeper IRELAND IRELAND Francis LAWRENCE Wife M Female W 25 TN Housekeeping TN TN Kittie C. LAWRENCE Dau S Female W 3 TN IRELAND TN (I can't find the link for this Carter Co., info) Then I found him again (I think) in the 1880 Census as a "boarder" in a home in Claiborne Co., TN. His occupation was listed as "Revenue Lawyer and Storekeeper". He was boarding in the home of a "Distiller." What was a "storekeeper."
