Might signed up a Son or Grandson to SAR and you as the sponsor Tony ----- Original Message ----- From: Roberta Estes<mailto:robertajestes@att.net> To: tnhawkin@rootsweb.com<mailto:tnhawkin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 11, 2009 3:06 PM Subject: Re: [TNHAWKIN] DAR or SAR Chapters Hi Bob, You and I have chatted before. Raleigh Dodson who died in 1793 or 1794. His son is Lazarus Dodson, also a Rev War vet, who we are setting a stone for in Claiborne County, as soon as the stone comes in. Raleigh's service record is on the same pay list as his son Lazarus which we have submitted to the SAR as documentation for Lazarus stone which is on order. I went back to Hawkins County three weeks ago for a visit and found Raleigh's original land. He is very likely buried there because he owned it when he died. Eventually, his son in-law John Sanders owned it and that land stayed in the Sanders family for generations. We know that old John Sanders, Rev War vet, is buried there in that cemetery. So there are two in the same location. Now, the cemetery is terribly grown up with weeds, but I do think I could get someone to bushhog the approach. I did make contact with the Sanders family while I was there, although they don't own the land now, they did know where it was. The cemetery is in terrible disrepair and needs desperately to be fenced. It's huge, but only 4 or 5 markers are there. It was last used in the 1800s except for the wife of John Sanders Jr who died in 1911 (second younger wife). Anyway, Raleigh Dodson is my ancestor and I'd love to have a veteran's marker set for him. I think the Sanders family would like to have a marker for old John Sanders too, but we're both worried about the cemetery just disappearing with time. I can't join the SAR because I'm a female and I can't found a DAR chapter there because I'm not in the DAR nor do I live there. I'm in Michigan. I do, however, want to honor my ancestor, which is why I went back to find his land and his grave.
