Hugh - As far as I know there is no grave marker for Capt. Thomas Lee. I was sent a photograph of what appears to be a recently erected DAR type marker bearing those dates. His death date is confirmed in primary court records regarding his nun cupative will. The traditional birthdate of 1729 seems to have derived from the highly questionable Needham Lee Bible along with the statement that he was born at Ditchley. I am sure you are aware of this Bible, it being the one that Mims Lee examined in the 1930s and took a photostat back to Virginia from Shelby Co AL (can be downloaded from VSL site). There are also photocopies of this Bible in ETHS and TN State Archives. This Bible is the one Mrs. Boyle would not allow Will Franke to examine. Franke later acquired it from her estate and it is now missing. Handwriting analysis is badly needed to authenticate or disprove this record. The family representative Linda Shabo) also told me of a newspaper article printed in the 1880s about a family reunion of the Needham Lee descendants mentioning their relationship to the Lee family of Virginia and to Zachary Taylor. I did find a statement made in the Goodspeed 1886 bio of Judge Samuel J. Kirkpatrick of Washington Co TN mentioning his ggfr was Capt. John Lee but no name for ggmr. His gggfr was actually Capt. Thomas Lee. Says ggfr was near relative to Lighthorse Harry Lee (R. E. Lee's father). (Samuel Kirkpatrick b. 1841 was grandson of Susan (Lee) Chesnutt, daughter of Thomas Lee Jr., and granddaughter of Capt. Thomas Lee --pf) For what they are worth these are the earliest statements I can find regarding Capt. Thomas Lee's ancestry. A number of primary documents prove his and his last wife's previous residence in Johnston Co NC. Since I have not done any original research in Johnston Co I do not know if his relationship with John Lee Esq. is fairly well proved or not. Pat
