    1. Re: 1850 census look up Shorb/Short
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SHORB,SHARB,SHERB,BRIDGES, MCCRAW,WILDER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3426.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: I know the name is VERY different. In fact, a mis spelling of the name occurred in Fannin Co, TX somewhere around 1902 when John Shorb (son of the John Shorb I am trying to find in TN) died and his 2 sons were sent to live with others. One was adopted and the other had his name spelled SHARB and continues to this day. I am the grand daughter of the man who had his name mis spelled! In the family history, the name was said to be Von de Borth Shorb but I have not verified that. I suspect that the Shorb in TN did, in fact, shorten the name. It gets "butchered" again in the 1860 census for Dade Co. GA; it is spelled Sherb; but correct in the 1880 census for Boone Co. AR. I do appreciate your information and will check this out as heaven only knows how some of the census takers come up with spellings! Again, thanks for your time and I will certainly check.
